@Choux

Hugo has done the training to be a teacher. But he hasn't actually got a job as a teacher. The school he did a placement at during his training has said he was never employed by them and won't be returning.

So is he a teacher? Or is he a student? You decide.

crikey...

can you imagine him at Parents night... it's mundane enough with adding Hugo to the mix 😂

TheTallOakTrees · 05/08/2021 17:28

@QueenBee52

is there any point in putting newbies in now... 😳

the original set have a real sense of entitlement to be in there which is a shame for any newbies.. there is really no point 🙁

They need shaking up a bit. They shouldn't decide who stays or leaves either.

Maybe a lovely new pairing will be made (Abi maybe) with a new person and they could go onto win.

Anon778833 · 05/08/2021 17:28

How can there be spoilers??

NoLongerATeacher · 05/08/2021 17:31

I think Hugo will really struggle now to get a teaching job - he has sworn profusely and been a complete knob. Teachers have to be really careful on social media - squeaky clean - so I think that ship has sailed.

Hmmm, but then again another Mirror article that you can click on from the Hugo article describes Yewande from 2019 as a pharmacist several times when she clearly wasn't

Can someone explain the popularity of this show to me, because I just don't get it.

I must confess this is the first series I have really tried to watch and all I knew was if successful you can make big money as an influencer or in advertising or get onto other TV shows. I also knew it has had some serious issues with the MH of previous contestants and a past presenter. But I recently had to 'isolate' and had spare time, so I went onto the ITV Hub and tried to 'catch-up'.

I'm five episodes in and each one seems to be the same, in fact the conversations the people have seem to be the same: Girl: "so what is your type", Boy: "you're my type", Girl: "Great & what do you like to do on a date" Boy: "something something something..." well you get the idea and anyway what is the whole point of this 'date' question, as they are confined to one place aren't they? so its not as if they can do different things except sit watching the sunset whilst chatting about who is who's 'type'. Also the choosing bit seems cruel.

I know it has a massive following on mumsnet and from what I have seen that surprises me too, I would assume that these young women that I have observed so far represent the total opposite of what most real mumsnetters stand for. Please enlighten me.

I am not unfamiliar with reality TV - I enjoyed Big Brother in the noughties and that Circle thing on Channel 4 was fun - but both had a range of different people, not a bunch of super-attractive 'action men' and 'barbie dolls' giving millennials a bad name by being obsessed about image, above everything else. #amImakingsense ?

P.S. When these 'coupling/de-couplings' happen, is it always the women who have the power? I know it has finished now, but it did run about ten series: that Paddy McGuinness thing 'Take Me Out'. Every time that came on I always thought, this would never be allowed if it were 30 men lighting up (or not) their reaction to one woman, but because the females had the power it was accepted. But was it right?

P.P.S. - The women on 'Love Island' actually remind me of the women from 'Take Me Out'! are we actually in some sort of distopia where these 'barbie-girls' are being cloned, for mass entertainment?

Hopeisallineed · 05/08/2021 17:53

I don’t think females do have the power on Take me Out, do they? It’s the men that run round turning lights off and choosing. No, in Love Island it alternates, one time is the girls, next time the boys get to decide.

Hopeisallineed · 05/08/2021 17:56

As for popularity, I imagine people like it for different reasons. I have to admit I’m
Not particularly invested in this year but sometimes there are nice people on it who really do seem to find a connection. The hot young buff men wandering round in their pants also helps. (#notshallow😂). But that’s just why I watch it.

Chicchicchicchiclana · 05/08/2021 17:59

If Love Island isn't your cup of tea surely there are hundreds if not thousands of other things you could watch?

I don't think this year is that good really, I'd also be wondering the same if it was the only one I'd watched! Usually it's entertaining as it shows them having fun, they show some of their random conversations and you get to know them a bit. They usually have more of a variety imo, all very good looking of course, but usually interesting. The games are usually lighthearted and they aren't as cliquey, so when new arrivals come in it's not as hostile; they also usually explore friendship a bit more rather than just focus on weird love triangles. Social media has got more serious though, people take others' opinions very seriously and challenge a lot of things unnecessarily in my view, it's viscious.

There's usually more of a balance of power but this series it seems like the boys have had most of it which has changed the dynamic I think as well.

I'm not sure what you consider a 'real mumsnetter' though, maybe enlighten us?

Can't see it on the app...

Why would you bother to write such a long post about a show you don't watch and are not interested in?
patkinney · 05/08/2021 18:12

Thank you @Chicchicchicchiclana and @Hopeisallineed - yes I don't think I will be watching much more - but I was just curious as to its popularity, especially on here. I'm also finding the background music oppressive too, it makes the show too much like a long promo-video, at times.

In 'Take Me Out', I think the power initially is with the women, when the man first appears they can keep their light on or turn it off, hence the catch-phrase: "no likey, no lighty!".... but when the final choice is made, it does go to the male contestant - I think you are right. But my point remains: if a TV executive had proposed 30 men stood at lights which they can turn on or off based on a woman coming out of a lift (so on looks only) it would never have been commissioned.

P.S. Your name (Chicchicchicchiclana) is a nightmare to type in!

Hopeisallineed · 05/08/2021 18:16

It’s not to be better than Take me Out! Hasn’t it? Now that is utter shite.

Pob13 · 05/08/2021 18:33

Its just so weird that they released that picture. Surely someone's head is going to roll. Imagine if it was staged and different people stayed in. Now that would be good entertainment!

AngeloMysterioso · 05/08/2021 18:39

LI was very compelling and fun for the first few seasons, when the islanders were allowed to act more naturally. I’d say it started going downhill in 2018. It’s now outgrown itself and become quite formulaic and very tightly controlled, and the islanders are all handpicked by the producers and very clearly thinking of their post-LI influencer deals (if they’re not influencers already which almost all of them are in some form now) so they’re much more boring well behaved!

AngeloMysterioso · 05/08/2021 18:41

With all that being said… I still watch it every night. Although chatting about it on MN is often more entertaining than the show itself these days!

patkinney · 05/08/2021 18:44

@Hopeisallineed

Well yes!

I wasn't trying to say that was good, I was just pointing out that whoever suggested the format did so in a clever way, because had they proposed it with the genders reversed it would have been laughed out of the town for being too 1970s: 'Carry-On'/'Benny-Hill', if you know what I mean.

To be fair, 'Take Me Out' is an early Saturday evening show and a big hit for the main ITV channel back in the day, 'Love Island' is ITV2 and post-watershed with a more focused target audience.

But that is another thing that I find odd about the show: yes, they swear, but apart from that, it is incredibly sanitised - unlike say Kinga from Big Brother Six for an outrageous comparison - google with care, younger people. I mean what is this obsession with 'spooning' all about?

Perhaps it is this way as they have one-eye-on-the-prize: advertising contracts and other more mainstream TV shows in years to come. I don't think Kinga ever made it onto 'Eight out of Ten Cats', but I am willing to be corrected!
