I finished listening to the Eyes on Gilead podcast yesterday and their theory about Janine is that since earlier in the episode you saw the new handmaid's being paired up and Janine said to June - handmaids always walk in twos... Moira (used to be a handmaid-in-training) is now back to replace Janine as June's partner.

😭😭😭 if that speculation proves to be true.

Yes I heard that. I also thought they'd hammered home the "anyone who helps June ends up dead" in that episode too 🙁

Most excitingly I’ll be watching “live” tomorrow for probably the first time ever as DH and the kids will be camping and I’ve a free house! What an indulgence. I might even listen to Eyes on Gilead directly after it. This is the most exciting thing to happen to me in years

Does anyone know where I can watch episode 1 (season 4)? For some reason this episode is no longer on my recordings list 🤬 and on demand is not showing episode 1 only 2 onwards.
My lovely baby is currently sleeping and I thought I’d treat myself and start watching only to find this episode missing. 😭

Aunt Lydia says the aim is for each household to hold a wife, a handmaiden and a Martha living in perfect harmony, each fulfilling a separate role. She wants the handmaids to have the same status as wife’s though and be allowed to use the front door and to have their own garden.

I also seem to remember that Serena was a lot older in the book, so the idea of wanting Wives to look on their Handmaids as daughters would fit - isn’t that in there somewhere? Although it’s a very creepy idea.

Yes in the book Serena is much older - she walks with a cane and has arthritic hands. I don’t think it says how old she is but the impression is of a much older lady. But the commander is also quite old, with grey hair and wrinkles. It makes more sense that those in power would be older.

Thanks for the podcast suggestion. Getting time in the school holidays has been a challenge but youngest is off to a two week workshop tomorrow so hopefully will get some headspace.

I have a thought that June might go to Canada and recover for a bit. And then make the decision to go back into Gilead. Which seems madness but I think it happens more than we think.

It seemed like the holy grail to escape Gilead but she now wants to bring it down rather than just escape for herself.

When you watch films about resistance fighters and spies in world war 2 you get caught up in that particular storyline and think when they escape this time, they will be so relieved that they will go off and live a quiet life in a cottage by the sea. But, often the titles at the end say they went back in to fight again. There's something in them that is willing to put themselves at risk to keep fighting.

There was a film recently about the first women spies to go into France. It was crazy that they went back in after all they went through on a first botched mission. Not sure I could do it.

Anyway, hoping that it was Janine that was being led away and that she makes it to Canada to live by the cottage by the sea with a family. Then, we get both ends of the spectrum. The happy ever ending with an easy life and the fiesty, take no shit freedom fighter who takes on the world.

Just bought The Testament thanks to this thread and Im half way through already!

I'm enjoying It so far although I know it's got mixed reviews.

I also googled Scientology for some reason yesterday and found that Elizabeth Moss is a long term Scientologist - completely shocked me, to be honest.

June wouldn't stand for it!

Thanks for the podcast recommendation. I've never listened to podcasts before,but have really enjoyed them. The Testaments is top of my "to buy" list on payday. I'm going away for a week just after so hopefully it will arrive in time to take with me.

I think Eyes on Gilead is great, but just going to repeat the warning that they talk about scenes from the season trailer - so if you’ve avoided watching that because of potential spoilers you might want to wait before listening to the podcast.

I know it has had a lot of criticism but I enjoyed the Testaments.

It's kind of like this series. I think I am just so interested in the whole world of Gilead and the world around it that I am willing to read and watch stuff about it even when it's not always up to the standard of the original book.
I do keep wondering when my jump the shark moment will be though.

As a PP said the book had such an effect on my place as a woman in the real world. I still use it as explanation as to why I didn't change my name.

Also in the epilogue of the book (which I accidentally read first as my kindle opened it to where I finished reading last time and I didn’t realise) it says that Nick is presumed to be an Eye and a mayday operative. Which is what I think he is (double agent so to speak) but which came first and how far he believes the Gilead line I am not sure.

I absolutely sobbed at the end of this episode when Moira appeared. I also rewound and paused a few times and feel quite certain the woman being led off through the smoke was Janine. I really hope so as couldn’t cope if she was killed. I think she’s my favourite!
