A thread for those watching Season 4 of the Handmaid's Tale on Channel 4 starting this evening. There's another thread for those who have already streamed it via Hulu, so it would be good if we could keep this one free of spoilers for episodes beyond those Channel 4 has broadcast.

This episode was nerve-racking. I still need more answers though..

Horehound · 04/07/2021 22:54

I actually don't find nick attractive and feel he's a bit of a wet blanket.
It's a pass from me!

GoingGently · 04/07/2021 22:54

Oh great, they're watching THT on gogglebox now! 🙈

BroccoliRob · 04/07/2021 22:57

I cried when they kissed 😳
I'm a sucker for a love story and if this doesn't end with Nick, June, Nichole, Hannah, Luke, Emily and Moira all living as a happy family then I won't be happy 😉

MotionActivatedDog · 04/07/2021 22:58

@RiaOverTheRainbow

I'm pretty lukewarm on Nick so that might be biasing me, but was anyone actually pleased by that snog? Regardless of onlookers it seemed weird for June to want to kiss anyone when she was despairing 10 seconds ago Confused
The kiss didn’t make sense or feel right for that moment.

Other things that didn’t make sense is the killing of the known (to us) handmaids by the train and guardian. What was the point? Surely just have them unable to cross? So many handmaids and Marthas killed tonight.

And finally (probably not finally- I’ll think of more) why are the guardians suddenly killing instead of capturing everyone the find while searching for the handmaids? They killed on sight the guardian with June at the farm. And tonight they killed the commander at the farm the handmaids were hiding in. That’s not the Gilead way. That’s the Hollywood way. Gilead brings them in, tortures them a bit, puts them on trial and then issues their punishment- the wall or a severed limb etc. And particularly when they made a point of letting us know how short they’re running on commanders (9 in hospital- 6 dead) why would they just kill one at his house? Have the guardians been given knew orders to kill on sight anyone they suspect of aiding the handmaids?

Phew, found this thread at last, don’t know where it was hiding, maybe in a barn on a farm....that was the most stressful episode I have seen. Poor June, poor Janine, poor Hannah. And what happened to the Marthas was heartbreaking. There must be retribution for the lieutenant, preferably meted out by June.

BroccoliRob · 04/07/2021 22:59

@vivariumvivariumsvivaria

June and Janine both have kids in Gilead - do we know if the others did?

It maybe makes sense - let's see if they can get their daughters out.

Lydia's in trouble if June has escaped, erm, again. They'll accuse her of being in the resistance.

Janine had a son, but remember June found out that he had been killed in a car accident. She didn't tell Janine though - she lied and said he was fine.

Grin

I have a horrible feeling the beautiful nick won’t live too see the end of this season.

paniniswapx3 · 04/07/2021 23:01

@BroccoliRob don't forget that Janine also has Angela (I can't remember the name Janine gave her).

MotionActivatedDog · 04/07/2021 23:01

Also I reckon if nick was a double agent he would have told June by now.

I know! It was just when they declared their love for each other this evening I had that sinking feeling.
WitchSharkadder · 04/07/2021 23:08

Max Minghella is beautiful, they cannot remove him from my screen. I won't have it.

WitchSharkadder · 04/07/2021 23:09

Do we know they killed the Commander on the farm? We didn't see anything, just heard bangs and clattering. Plus, we don't even know if it was a Commander and wife, could've been econopeople loving there.

Horehound · 04/07/2021 23:10

Can someone explain the double agent theory to me please? Who are the two places he's working for? Gilead and ???

BroccoliRob · 04/07/2021 23:10

What's going to happen to June and Janine now?

Iggi999 · 04/07/2021 23:12

Phew, just finished watching and my heart rate is slowing going back down! Have been shouting at the telly Grin
Going back to read the comments now.

MotionActivatedDog · 04/07/2021 23:12

I’m almost sure we heard a guardian say something like “where are they commander burrows?” Although I could be making it up in my own head Grin

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 04/07/2021 23:13

Thanks, Broccoli I'd remembered Angela, and forgotten the son!

That was a kindness of June. She's been concerned about Janine's wellbeing all along, it'll be interesting to see them get on with things.

Twickytwo · 04/07/2021 23:14

Does anyone else find it distasteful that Canada is seen here as the enlightened, liberal country and a safe place for the children, in light of the recent discovery of the bodies of hundreds of indigenous children at two different schools in Canada.
The programme makes Canada seem a place of real equality and tolerance when until recently it was anything but. You might think that they are pushing imaginary crimes against women as a way of covering up the real life horrific crimes against children. Easier to portray the dystopian fantasy of oppressing women than to acknowledge the atrocities carried out against real life children.

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 04/07/2021 23:14

Hang on, where's Esther?
Thought Janine was to get her decent shoes and take her with them?

Crinkle77 · 04/07/2021 23:15

He could be working for Mayday or as a spy for another country.
Crinkle77 · 04/07/2021 23:17

Nick said Mrs Keyes was safe in custody.
