Motherland inconsistencies

I am watching the first two seasons again, having just finished the third one and I’ve noticed a couple of inconsistencies. I am happy to be corrected though.

1- in the first series Kevin says that his mother lives near Andover (I think it’s Andover, but the actual location doesn’t matter). In the third series he says that she died when he was 8.

2- in the first series Anne says she’d had an early menopause, so how did she get pregnant again in the second series (which I assume is Baby Niamh who she has had by the third series). Was there some kind of mistake/realisation that I missed?

I remember Kev saying about his mum in Andover in series one! Maybe he meant his step mum ?
I Can't remember much about Anne though and I've seen them all!
I hate it when they change things.

CatherineCawood · 07/06/2021 22:03

Marion had a different house in series 1. No mention of her moving.

Roadhouse111 · 07/06/2021 22:04

Haha I was thinking that about the menopause one too as I watched the first series again!

Hyacinth88 · 07/06/2021 22:05

Binged all 3 series recently and yes I agree.

OnslowsBaseballCap · 07/06/2021 22:07

Yes re Kevin's age...in the latest series doesn't he say he was 9 when his mum died in 1991? In series one episode one he refers to his wife enjoying shower sex in the 90s...

OnslowsBaseballCap · 07/06/2021 22:08

Although I suppose they could have married in 1999 Grin

Nancylovesthecock · 07/06/2021 22:11

I thought that Anne thought she had gone through early menopause but she was in fact pregnant? Being a bit away with the fairies like she is?

Oh yea, I’d noticed references that didn’t make Kevin’s age add up properly.

Ahhh I was confused when Kevin said he was 8 in 1991 as well!

TuvoknotSpock · 07/06/2021 22:27

Yes especially as the actor is obviously older than that

mammmamia · 08/06/2021 08:29

Yes, I was a bit Confused that Kevin is younger than me Shock

the80sweregreat · 08/06/2021 09:22

I'm sure that the writers of series three haven't watched 1 and 2! Or remember it that well.

Bibidy · 09/06/2021 12:36

Yesss Kevin says his mum lives in Fleet near Aldershot when Amanda tells him about her threesomes. Then later says his mother died when he was 8.

I also thought the same re Anne and menopause but maybe Nancy is right and it was her pregnancy.

Trying to think of others Hmm....

StarFriend · 09/06/2021 12:42

And in a very very early episode (maybe even the pilot) Kevin says Amanda's mother flies home from Portugal once a month or something to look after her grandchildren.

Then in series three we meet Amanda's mother who is completely disinterested in her grandchildren and obviously doesn't regularly look after them.

Still a great show though

TheReturnOfTheMaud · 09/06/2021 12:50

I hadn’t watched any of this show until recently binging the whole lot. I wasn’t convinced by the arithmetic of Kevin’s age either. For me, one of the biggest inconsistencies was Ann (who was such an unassertive wet blanket) revealing she’d been head of European something at Glaxo Smith Kline or similar. But I still loved it.

Palavah · 09/06/2021 13:13

That didn't feel like an error, but a very deliberate joke - making a point about motherhood and career.

TheReturnOfTheMaud · 09/06/2021 13:19

I wasn’t convinced that anyone could (presumably) have enough presence to hold down a high-powered job and yet let themselves be treated as a skivvy by Amanda. That’s not about any trade-off between career and motherhood, that’s about personality.

Yes, I agree. I absolutely love Anne, she is full of surprises.
the80sweregreat · 09/06/2021 13:31

Anne would never have such a high powered job ( Meg would though !)
I wonder if she just said that because Amanda thought she worked for Greggs? Having a bit of a pop at her generally ? Not very Anne to do something like that though to be fair so doesn't make sense really .
Kevin's age and losing mum didn't add up either unless he called step mum his mum ?
Which wouldn't be odd at all. ( or the writers have just forgotten all of series one and two which is more like it)

Crockof · 09/06/2021 13:35

I thought it was very true when we found out Anne used to have a high powered job. I know of parents who have given up their identity since having children, and since becoming stay at home.

UnaLength · 09/06/2021 13:38

I loved Julia telling Ann she was beautiful when she was angry in the final episode when she finally loses it and tells Amanda she's a cow.

the80sweregreat · 09/06/2021 13:44

Meg you can believe could run a home and a business and never sleep and be fantastic at it all.
Anne is too much of an earth mother and would feel guilty if she had to work late or go away with work and leave her brood behind ( No offense to Anne, just how she comes across or she did in series 1 and 2 anyway)
Still, who I am to judge anyone with my one CSE in science!

midsomermurderess · 09/06/2021 15:16

Ann's job was meant to be a surprise. Blimey, you have to wonder sometimes.
