I'm not any better at sewing than poetry as it happens.

Anyways, line for Patrick starts behind me.

I am living series 1 just got to the final. What strikes me is how much the earlier ones were about the technical aspects of sewing and not about design as such .

Ulysses · 10/06/2021 14:11

I didn't realise the other series were all on iplayer too. Can't think why I haven't seen the fourth series. That's my viewing sorted for the next few days!

At this stage I'd be happy if either Serena or Raph won, it'll most likely depends on what the final made to measure looks like and if it has the wow factor. Mind you a couple of years ago I thought Riccardo would have been a strong contender but his dress was hideous.

SoupDragon · 10/06/2021 15:27

@PickAChew

Though thanks, soup, I hadn't realised they'd made those older ones available, now. I can finally catch up. (currently racing through Friday night dinner while it's on Netflix because I can't stand all the ads on all 4)
I didn't know either! I'm looking forward to a re-watch 🙂

Yes. This also happened in an earlier series where a yoga teacher was favourite to win but produced something hideous in the final MTM.

@Jellykat

Isnt it weird how big boobed and teeny tiny waisted they were then.. how evolution has changed the female form through the decades!
I don't think it was evolution it was 6 years of war and rationing. Rationing didn't end until 1954. My parents were married in 1953 and my mum was absolutely tiny but she got quite rotund in middle age. Plus they wore very tight undergarments no woman went out without her girdle.

We would all be that slim if food was rationed that severely.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 10/06/2021 17:31

DGM was talking about roll-ons the other day. They didn't sound comfortable.

Thinking back, I'm surprised they didn't give them vintage sewing machines last night.

Lifeislikea · 10/06/2021 17:45

In the first episode of this series I thought there were too many 'I'm mad, me' contestants, but it's been really enjoyable.

I loved Serena's Dior outfit last night, so stylish and exactly what the brief required.

I can't understand anyone accusing the judges of favouritism towards her. If that had been the case wouldn't she have won GOTW sooner?

Cocolapew · 10/06/2021 18:37

Oh I didn't know they had finally put all the series on iplayer! Thank you!

Rebecca's MTM reminded me strongly of something. Just switched on my TV and saw a clip on the Hitchcock film Shadow of a Doubt set in the 1950s. I had seen if recently on Talking Pictures channel. Has anyone else seen it? The young female protaganist wears a dress very like Rebecca's ( the GBSBs not Hitchcock's Rebecca).

I have only just sorted out Serena and Rebecca in my mind. Their names seem like they should be the other way round to me. I was also wondering about the actual filming. I know they have a covid safe protocol but I realised I had assumed they filmed one episode a week whereas they probably do 2 or 3 using the full working week so the series takes about 4 weeks to film. Has anyone done it and able to say? Do they film the tasks out of sequence?

It must be exhausting, not just for the work and being filmed but the emotional stress of competing at the same time. This group seemed remarkably calm and good-tempered.

EsmaCannonball · 10/06/2021 19:57

Shadow of a Doubt is a great film. Haven't seen it recently enough to remember outfits though.

iklboo · 10/06/2021 19:59

Serena's Dior outfit would have looked great with a beret style hat.

cateycloggs · 10/06/2021 20:54

@EsmaCannonball

It's very atmospheric, the costumes aren't glamorous but suit the 50s American suburban setting. I may have made a mistake on the channel, might be GREAT! (FORMERLY Sony ) Classics, but they were showing a preview so will repeat it but I did not note the day.I love watching old films for the clothes (male and female) and decor and the street scenes. Watched Psyco again up until the shower scene which is when I leave it. My favourite is Rear Window, cannot watch that film too much. Gret 50s wardrobe on both Grace Kelly and the nurse (sorry forget her name).

Wouldn't a Great Period Costume competition be be good? They would need a lot more time though.

cateycloggs · 10/06/2021 20:55

Sorry, great 50s wardrobe, maybe too many greats there.

I did admire Ann the first winner so much. she was so cool, calm and collected, such a stickler for doing everthing the right way and her way. I really can't sew, was given up on by our domestic Science teacher but I love to see people who have mastered a technical skill doing it well.
Binglebong · 10/06/2021 21:14

I feel very sorry for the contestants this series having to order fabric online. You normally buy fabric in person - I don't think I've ever been wholly satisfied in some I buy online without feeling it first. There was one a few weeks ago where they had to slather on interfacing to get it stiff enough- if they had been able to go to the shop they would have seen and rejected it.

Binglebong · 10/06/2021 21:15

I think the yoga teacher used a glue gun to stick flowers on her neoprene in the final. Never mind not winning - she was lucky she wasn't shot by Esme!

That rings a vague bell but only just. Which series was that?
Cocolapew · 10/06/2021 22:16

Is there only 4 episodes in series 1?!

SoupDragon · 10/06/2021 22:20

@Cocolapew

It was definitely shorter with fewer contestants. I thought it was more than 4 though I must say.
CaptainMyCaptain · 10/06/2021 22:21

@Cocolapew

Is there only 4 episodes in series 1?!
Yes and 2 contestants left each week.
SoupDragon · 10/06/2021 22:22

According to Wiki it was indeed only 4 weeks. 8 contestants though - I wonder how they did the elimination? I can't remember!

SoupDragon · 10/06/2021 22:24

2 each week? I don't remember that at all! I do remember Ann, Lauren, Tilly and Stuart though.

Tilly wasn't even a finalist! Went out on Week 2!

Cocolapew · 10/06/2021 22:24

I can't remember that, I was probably too busy making moon eyes at Patrick.

Binglebong · 10/06/2021 22:26

Mo idea I'm afraid Moonface - I just remember the female judge's look of disgust and disbelief! Not even sure if it was Esme or still Mae.

Series 2 so still May.

The contestant was Tamara. (Wiki is your friend!) It was the year Posh Heather the Dressage instructor won.
