I'm not any better at sewing than poetry as it happens.

Anyways, line for Patrick starts behind me.

@dillite

Farie had to go. Her dress didn't fit the model. It was badly sewn. And not finished!
And it wasn't New Look/Dior
MoonCatcher · 10/06/2021 08:14

@dillite

I follow on Instagram someone who creates gorgeous clothes
The woman in the first picture on the right seems to have lost her arms 🤔
HeadNorth · 10/06/2021 08:15

I don't think Rebecca's really hit the 'New Look/Dior' brief - it was more generic 1940s. Serena's was definitely the stand out for hitting the brief of an updated 'New Look' and also being lovely - I would love to wear that jacket & fitted trousers, it was very chic.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 10/06/2021 08:22

@SoupDragon

Wtf? He had some dodgy stitching on the waistband!? Serena's wqs just the sodding ironing
Yes!

We thought that.

This whole series is gonna be Serena vs Raph, and i want Raph to win

And I'm team Serena (this could get ugly Grin)

Zzelda · 10/06/2021 08:32

I struggle to envisage what Farie was aiming for when she said she intended to buy much stiffer fabric.

SoupDragon · 10/06/2021 08:42

@Zzelda

I think it would have given her dress a more structured look rather than the drape she got. With this structure I think it would have looked far more like the style they were after.
Rizzoli123 · 10/06/2021 08:54

Raff to win. For me Serena is to good St everything. I know this is unpopular but I think Serena is getting to much praise. When they see her pattern or alternation challenge they praise it reguardless and know its Serenas so they just praise it as they know she can see. I didn't like her mtm not saying it wasn't well sewn but it wasn't for me

Rizzoli123 · 10/06/2021 08:55

Plus i think Farie souks of gone the week before and Damien should of been in last Night

SoupDragon · 10/06/2021 09:00

They praise Serena because her sewing skills are excellent. They ranked Raph's trousers above hers despite of his dodgy waist band stitching because of her ironing skills!

SoupDragon · 10/06/2021 09:01

Farie and Damien were much of a muchness last week. Damien threw it away with his sofa fabric dress that didn't fit the brief.

Bellendejour · 10/06/2021 09:31

She splashed out at the Church Roof Jumble Sale, thought, 'I'll slim into it before the wedding,' and then not quite managed to.

LOL!

Serena overall won yesterday, her trousers were perfect she just fucked the ironing up, her transformation was by far the best and her mtm was stunning, a really stylish modern update on New Look. I liked Raph’s but it was more about the fabric choices while Serena’s was a really clever design and possibly more complicated sewing.

I really like both Raph and Serena so I’ll be happy if either win, though probably erring towards Serena. Raph has innate style/creative flair and fits beautifully and Serena has grown so much in terms of her creativity and is such a hard worker and really calm under pressure.

I’m still annoyed about Raph’s jumpsuit!

witheringrowan · 10/06/2021 09:37

I loved both of Raph & Serena's MTMs this week. Now on a mission to find a pattern for Raph's blouse to see if I could make it myself!

Rizzoli123 · 10/06/2021 09:44

She is but I just think she gets too much praise and I'm certain challenges as soon as the judges realise who it is its like oh well done Serena but the others are better but hers gets picked as first.

I know they did and I prefered his trousers

LadyEloise · 10/06/2021 09:54

I loved Serena's transformation blue dress. Stunning!
She deserved the GOTW for her New Look outfit. So simple and classy.
Esme is forever saying what a wonderful sewer she is.
I'm not surprised Farie went- sadly the time constraint cost her.
I think Serena will win but it will be very tight- Raph is soo good.
I felt that Serena and Raph were always way ahead of the competition, from the off.

SoupDragon · 10/06/2021 10:03

the others are better but hers gets picked as first.

They don't pick hers if others are better. They do pick others despite hers being better though. Case in point...

I know they did and I prefered his trousers

It's a sewing competition though.

SoupDragon · 10/06/2021 10:06

And don't get me started on the praise heaped on the hideous bridal gown! It looked like a dog had chewed it.

Don't get me wrong, I really like Raph and I'd be perfectly happy for him to win if his sewing is better on the day.

also, there are many many hours of footage that we don't see.

SoupDragon · 10/06/2021 10:09

I think last night is the first time I've disagreed so much with their judging. This year anyway.

Zzelda · 10/06/2021 10:13

How do they praise it regardless? They can see what she has sewn, I'm quite sure if she made mistakes they would point them out. They can only describe what they see.
SchadenfreudePersonified · 10/06/2021 10:13

@SoupDragon

tomorrow I will do the pockets, side seams and maybe get the waistband on.

You've got one hour! One hour!

Grin

Oh Farie. I actually think she's the best if she wasn't under time pressure

I think you are right - it's the time pressure which she finds difficult. I'll miss her (though I would have missed any of them at this stage - I feel I know them). Her MTM was awful, though - not New Look at all.

They made bras in one of the earlier series iirc.

Yes, they did. It was the series where ALL of the sewers were a stunningly high standard, and it was neck-and-neck for ebvery challenge, and there was a younger woman who had taken up swewing after a horse-riding accident confined her to barracks for months (IIRC) and she had reached an AMAZING standard in that time. i think in the final she had that cloth that was covered with millions of tiny quartz-gemstones and she took a hammer to it - Patrick said something like "It's £10,000 a metre and she's smashing it up" in a sort of horrified and yet admiring tone . . . (IIRC)

There were a lot more pattern pieces to a bra than I realised.

I think the right one left, but for the wrong reasons - Farie is a much better sewer than Rebecca, but can't work against the clock, which is a great shame.

I actually liked Rebecca's skirt and jacket if it had been sewn together properly, and, as Esme said, the jacket hadn't had the contrasting flowery fabric on it - it cheapened the look.

Rafe's wedding dress was horrific! And I wasn't keen on the scuba skirt, though the sheer fabric top was exquisite! (My mother would have made me wear a vest under that.)

Serena was a deserving winner with those trousers and jacket - gorgeous - I've worn similar many years ago and looked fabulous in it. It's a very flattering look. I also think she did a much better job of her Oxford bags, but heigh-ho.

Really looking forward to the final, but it's a two-horse race.

Sorry Soup - I didn't realise you'd posted a link (I thought I'd read the full thread, but hadn't). Now will watch to see if I was right about that particular contestant.

Zzelda · 10/06/2021 10:16

I'm certain challenges as soon as the judges realise who it is its like oh well done Serena but the others are better but hers gets picked as first.

That wouldn't account for the times she's won or come second in the transformation challenge when they don't know who has sewn what.

SoupDragon · 10/06/2021 10:21

It was the series where ALL of the sewers were a stunningly high standard

And yet, when I googled it, I didn't really remember any of them! Vague recollection of the older male and red haired young woman but other than that... nope.

Helenluvsrob · 10/06/2021 11:41

It’s been serena vs raph all the way hasn’t it.

I know Rebecca finished but her MTM was early 80s c&a rather than “ new look couture” and the buttons were so off.

Ah - I never got to see that series.

PickAChew · 10/06/2021 13:39

Though thanks, soup, I hadn't realised they'd made those older ones available, now. I can finally catch up. (currently racing through Friday night dinner while it's on Netflix because I can't stand all the ads on all 4)
