I'm not any better at sewing than poetry as it happens.

Anyways, line for Patrick starts behind me.

@cateycloggs - Grace Kelly's wardrobe for High Society became her wedding trousseau. There was an exhibition of the clothes at the V&A a few years ago.

Binglebong · 10/06/2021 22:52

I loved the dressage dress. Echoes of steampunk. I still desire it!

MoonCatcher · 11/06/2021 07:59

Ah, now I remember Tamara now, thank you. 😊

MoonCatcher · 11/06/2021 08:02

I watched S1 for the first time last year. The transformation changes were so different. Pretty up this plain white t-shirt, put a pocket on a skirt...

Zzelda · 11/06/2021 08:50

In many ways I preferred the original transformation challenges. Who the hell is ever going to have to make something out of a parachute, after all?

SoupDragon · 11/06/2021 08:53

I think the transformation challenges are purely to see who can think outside of the box and also to show how you can reuse other items in quite dramatic ways. You don't need to buy new fabric all the time.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 11/06/2021 09:26

I do think though that they should check the transformation is actually wearable. It's all very well it looking good on the mannequin but if there's no way you could actually get into it (or wear it without exposing yourself) then I don't think it should be highly marked.

GlencoraP · 11/06/2021 09:34

Just watching series 2 and I think the transformation challenges are a)more technical amd b) more realistic. For example taking a wool skirt and putting in a pleat or making a child’s summer dress out of two men’s shirts . Now it’s like here a pile of rubbish make a shape, pin it in the model but don’t worry if it’s not actually wearable .

Cocolapew · 11/06/2021 12:33

Just settling down with a cup of tea and shortbread to watch the first episode. I miss Claudia Sad

Binglebong · 11/06/2021 14:22

I said back when it started that it would be great to have a fit change challenge - it can be harder than making from new. For example - making a jacket more fitted takes the sides up and reduces the length. Reducing back width may be able to be done at the centre but if you do at the sides you'll likely have to remove the sleeves. Much harder!

They could still do it on mannequins by just padding them to a different shape or provide items two sizes too big.

Cocolapew · 11/06/2021 15:58

Maybe it's been mentioned and I've missed it but I was reading that Patrick's dad died last year from Covid.

If I had one I would definitely make something out of it.
SoupDragon · 11/06/2021 16:13

We did have one for a while. I wonder what my brother did with it 🤔

CaptainMyCaptain · 11/06/2021 16:17

I'd make silky underwear and nightclothes.

SoupDragon · 11/06/2021 16:32

Not out of one of those rustling rip stop nylon parachutes you wouldn't!

A silk one I would.

I don't think they're made out of silk any more.
whatwasIgoingtosay · 11/06/2021 22:18

I've just watched the bra challenge from the link someone provided upthread. It was 2016 and I was really struck by how very much younger Patrick looked! He has aged a lot in appearance, but actually I think he looks much better now.

Cocolapew · 11/06/2021 22:31

He's gorgeous in the early ones. I had to check to see how tall he was, Claudia and Mae are both looking up to him. I thought it was just because Esme was tiny, but he's 6'2.

Ulysses · 12/06/2021 07:41

I've been watching the that series and thought the same @whatwasIgoingtosay. A total dreamboat.

CaptainMyCaptain · 12/06/2021 08:54

I don't think they're made out of silk any more.
I know, I'm thinking of the 1940s ones, which is what I assumed the challenge was about. I haven't watched it yet because I've been away.

Which explains why you didn't get the rustling rip-stop nylon comment I made!
terrywynne · 12/06/2021 09:09

The parachute transformation was a bit weird. Yes they used parachutes during the war for wedding dresses. But because they were made of silk or was it something like silk? Rip stop nylon isn't really the same thing.

Claire who won last year does things on Instagram like turn a skirt in a shape she won't wear often into a skirt she will wear, or mend clothes etc (because she is trying to reduce/reuse by only buying new clothes in accordance with rationing allowances). Mending and altering existing clothes would have been a much better 1940s transformation challenge that might actually have practical applications today...

CaptainMyCaptain · 12/06/2021 16:16

I understood your comment @SoupDragon but I was in a 1940s silk parachute mindset imagining what I'd make. I've watched it now and think both Farie's and Rebecca's still looked like draped parachutes. Raff's new look outfit was made of horrible fabric too - rip stop nylon and scuba!

Claire is my all-time favourite!
