I noticed that the last thread was full, so I hope no-one minds that I've started a new one!

I watched Call The Midwife for the first time on Sunday for years, didn't realise it had been rebranded as Call
The Turners, love the title OP Grin

Sorry, I'm just watching it now, does anyone know how they could choose to take him straight to the adoption place and not her go to Mother and Baby?! That was so very sad!

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 18/05/2021 12:22

It seemed as if the mother's word and decision counted ultimately? I am not sure what the teen girl's rights would have been in those days? As she was talking university one would have assumed she must have been 17 or 18 so able to make up her own mind but apparently not?

Soubriquet · 18/05/2021 12:26

Interesting theory.

We will see if it crops up

ContinuousMonotoneBeep · 18/05/2021 12:28
**@MyOtherProfile* I sent you a PM and will send you one @ContinuousMonotoneBeep*.

I think the priest arriving was just a storyline to monetise their spare rooms and a precursor to getting the pupil midwives lodging there!
Thank you!

Enjoying the idea of SMJ killing and eating the curate. He'd need a sprinkle of sugar to suit her sweet tooth I imagine.

Disclaimer: This was said in jest. I in no way endorse cannibalism or murder.

She was waiting for her O level results, think her mum also said she was 16?

I think she was younger - having just completed her O Levels. So 16, possibly 15?

But even so I don't think she'd have had much in the way of rights under the age of 18.

Rae36 · 18/05/2021 12:32

I thought the secretary woman (whose name has gone right out of my head) would have stopped them taking baby Oliver away. She was so unexpectedly kind to them, to the young dad in particular.

That'll be Millicent Trilby Higgins. Grin
NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 18/05/2021 12:47

I clearly had an absence at some point during that episode because I missed the whole Timothy getting his A Level results and talk of the young mum's O Level results (although I did pick up on talk of her going off to university).

I think Millicent is so professional that there's no way she'd overstep the mark to challenge the grandmum on removing the baby.

LucindaJane · 18/05/2021 12:51

I remember an older episode with a young diabetic girl who was pregnant. They recommended an abortion and although she didn't want to, there was a comment along the lines of "you're under 21, you can't choose" which I found horrific, but presumably that was the case.

I’m optimistically imagining Miss Higgins and Nurse Crane cooking up a plan over a thermos and a biscuit to kidnap the baby back. Am I remembering right that Nurse Crane was an illegitimate baby given up at birth?
SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 18/05/2021 13:09

I just hope that, when the Summer (eventually) arrives, we will all remember Nurse Crane's wise words, and make good use of the jar of deodorant left in the clinical room. No whiffy armpits ladies, please.

Because of course sweet smelling armpits matter far more than adequate hydration, for example!

SirVixofVixHall · 18/05/2021 13:22

I love Nurse Crane.

Soubriquet · 18/05/2021 13:27

Nurse Crane was an illegitimate baby, but she wasn’t given up

Her mother raised her as a single mum

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 18/05/2021 13:58

Sorry CaptainMyCaptain I said up thread that I must have missed some of it (maybe having a senior moment!) because all I kept hearing her talk about was university. I thought she was going imminently but she must have been talking about (near) future plans!

Iwantacampervan · 18/05/2021 13:59

The highlight for me was recognising my old university building (which is a hall of residence plus other things) masquerading as the place where the bereaved father lives, I assume in a flat/apartment.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 18/05/2021 14:13

@Iwantacampervan I'd just assumed that was somewhere near Battersea Park for some reason!

anon12345678901 · 18/05/2021 14:59

Oh wow, it's so sad to think that is how it was. I wasn't sure the age O Levels were at. That was definitely a sad point to the episode; thinking you had no rights over your baby until a certain age Sad

CallieJones · 18/05/2021 16:15

Why did they need to call Fred Buckle out for the leaky pipe? Surely it would have been within Dr T's expertise to diagnose and mansplain the problem.

eggandonion · 18/05/2021 16:24

Fred has a boiler suit and a wrench. He is working class. Dr Turner is a well spoken professional, in a suit.

Iwantacampervan · 18/05/2021 17:06

NewModelArmyMayhem18 The building is just outside Egham, West London and you only saw Trixie walk up the steps to the door (which they made very attractive with plants) Most of the interior filming takes place at Chertsey not far away.

Maireas · 18/05/2021 17:30

Well, my teal loving friends, so far so brilliant with the comments and observations!!
I love Phyllis and Millicent.
I did think the "dehydration" was anachronistic. I'd never heard of such a thing until about 20 years ago. Also people didn't really drink water.
Am loving all the theories about the young vicar!!

Does anyone remember the book flowers in the attic?

That’s the vicar that is.

Only he is the cheeseplant in the attic.
