I noticed that the last thread was full, so I hope no-one minds that I've started a new one!

I've only just caught up. I too was wondering what Sister Julienne's personality transplant was about. Though I think it was supposed to be the lying rather than the unmarried mother bit that she was cross about.

I think the info dumps would seem less ridiculous if they had anyone, and I mean ANYONE, other than Stephen McGann do them. He really does look like he's acting and his info dumps are definitely that. They can be done far less obviously!

I actually thought, when Nancy first revealed she had a baby it might be she had a baby very young, due to abuse and the baby had been sent away.

I'm sure there were nice nuns who would have been sympathetic, but as whole and then arranging for her to go train close to the orphanage, hmm]. I just think most nuns ended up accepting and going along the way unmarried mothers were treated (badly). Stanford Prison experiment type of thing - any new nun would soon become accustomed to the attitude.

That aside, I don't think Nancy's view abortion was too off for the time - it would have been drummed into her. Abortion hasn't been legal in Ireland for that long - you just need to look at the previous referendums ("Timeline: The history of abortion in Ireland") to understand general public option (as well as see it slowly change - thankfully). Too late for me though I was effected by it (and I didn't even seek an abortion, I couldn't be given a D&C so a miscarriage was drawn out).

@Aroundtheworldin80moves

I like the end speeches as well. The Australian migration one stuck with me .. poor kids thinking they were going to an idyllic life but the reality wasn't good :(
Have you read the book Empty Cradles by Margaret Humphreys - she was the social worker who brought the child migrant scandal to light, and got a lot of justice for the children and their families.
SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 28/05/2021 13:40

Sorry - I was interrupted (am in hospital with Covid, and the doctor came round).

I was going to say it was a heartbreaking book.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 28/05/2021 14:05

@SDTGisAnEvilWoleGenius sorry to hear you're poorly and in hospital. Hope you start to feel better soon.

Was that Dr Turner Shock Hmm Grin

I hope he explained the origins of the pandemic to you?

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 28/05/2021 14:39

No - he just patted my head and told me to trust the medical profession.

I’m waiting for Phyllis to turn up - she’d have me out of here in no time!

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 28/05/2021 17:13

@SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius thanks for the book recommendation. I came across the migrant scandal I a novel quite a few years ago and it always stuck with me.
(It also seemed bizarre that the UK was sending its own orphans abroad while bringing other orphans in from Hong Kong etc)
Hope you are able to escape the hospital soon.

Just went onto Twitter and this is the tweet I saw! It’s all about the Turners!

Call the Midwife...or the Turners?
Hollytreenew · 29/05/2021 10:26

I did just see they tweeted two other tweets about the finale that are about the midwives but that is the first one I saw.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 29/05/2021 10:27

On FB it's a picture of Nancy saying she faces a big decision...

My new theory... Turners adopt Nancy's little girl. Nancy no longer legally an unmarried mother, but allowed to see child regularly, and be a nurse.

BertieBotts · 29/05/2021 11:18

They're going to have to open an orphanage soon and take in all the waifs and strays of Poplar.

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 29/05/2021 11:31

If I were home tomorrow, I’d be having a swally at the mere mention of a Turner during the anniversary show. And a bottle for each yay.

I’d be a hot giddy mess by the news. In the garden, cavorting about, waving maireas’s flamboyant trews like streamers.

Probably.

But given that it is taps aff up here, my colleague has had a relapse and so I have to cover their shifts this weekend. Again.

The rage is mine.

Maireas · 29/05/2021 12:12

They're not even the most flamboyant trews I own, @SheldonesqueTheBstard! I am known at work for my colourful clothing!
It's bad that you've got to work the weekend again. I'm tempted to have strong words with your line manager Angry

It is all extra for the savings maireas but that colleague will be skating if they want off for anything important.

Of course that will no doubt warrant another absence but at least I will get the satisfaction of saying no first!

I do so admire those snazzy of dress. 😍

I’m usually clad in dark colours. Apart from my bedtime kaftans.

Nearer Abigail’s Party stylee - just not as flammable 😊

stumbledin · 30/05/2021 15:39

I have given up on this programme what with the dreadful music, the sanctimonious plot line (social distancing making it really hard to take seriously) Trixie looking like a really bad wax work figure of herself ...

But have enjoyed reading the comments on here as it makes me feel I haven't really missed much by not keeping up, and can still remember it from its early days.

Also thought I would post a link to FWR where there is some more details about trying to get a public apology for the women who went through forced adoptions www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/4254766-Movement-for-Adoption-Apology-mothers-and-children-who-were-separated-by-forced-adoptions-in-post-war-Britain

GarethSouthgatesWaistcoat · 30/05/2021 20:03

Sister Julienne is power tripping about which way a chair faces now!

DeusEx · 30/05/2021 20:06

@stumbledin that’s spot on on Trixie. She’s a beautiful woman with a really personable face - but the way they’ve made her up and done her hair does make her look like a waxwork version of herself. It’s very annoying!

DeusEx · 30/05/2021 20:07

Oh I can’t bear it 🤦‍♀️
Maireas · 30/05/2021 20:07

Switch all those bloody lamps off! Drives me mad. Every single lamp is always on in broad daylight, even in homes so poverty stricken there isn't a proper bed.

Ah, maybe Mr Aylward is involved in Lisburn Buildings? I

Very derivative of L.A. Law and the Stanley Tucci character?

PurpleWh1teGreen · 30/05/2021 20:21

Bit behind but how I love Miss Millicent Trilby Higgins.

jay55 · 30/05/2021 20:23

Of course the doctor will only use the most modern terms Grin
