Is back 18th April. I'm so glad we are getting a series this year, I find it such great escapism.

Is anyone else a fan?

@Maireas

I am, DeusEx. I'm also very irritated by Trixie and that silly voice. It seemed to vary quite a lot in the last episode in terms of poshness.
Agree. She’s stretching credibility a bit too - haven’t about 20 years passed since the first series?!

@ssd

Did people ever really talk in those clipped ways?
Yes they did. It sounds so odd now though.

I loved the two ladies from the church checking out the flat.

MrsFin · 19/04/2021 20:02

Yes.

3CCC · 19/04/2021 20:10

Based on the sneak park at the end of the episode

I reckon the lady who gave birth at the Mayfair clinic dies and Trixie after a respectable time gets with the widowed new father who is a bit clueless to how to bring a baby up

@DeusEx

Anyone else just thoroughly sick of Sr Monica Joan? For the last few series I have found every scene with her almost unwatchable.
Yes, she's a pain

Where is some 60s music, fab music in 1966,
they used to play a couple of tracks in earlier seres

YouWerePrettyIWasLonely · 19/04/2021 20:16

I wish sister MJ would shuffle off this mortal coil. I only realised yesterday that Violet is also the mum in Shameless.

Sister MJ has been shuffling off the mortle coil for the last 10 series or 16 years depending on how you look at it

She really think it's her time 😔😔

The main problem I have with that character is that the ONLY stroyline she ever gets given in recent series is Being Very Old. Surely, if she's going to stay as part of the show then the writers can give her more than this to work with?

16purplecolour16 · 19/04/2021 20:38

Watching episode now. OMG the acting is wooden, the music irritating and the script contrived. Hmm

Soubriquet · 19/04/2021 20:42

Sister Evangelinas funeral wrecked me

Sister Monica Joans, I think I’ll get the popcorn Grin

NecklessMumster · 19/04/2021 20:51

I was at uni with Violet Buckle, she was lovely

longtompot · 19/04/2021 20:52

It was nice to have this back on a Sunday night, but agree the script was quite wooden. It was highlighted to me when Sister Julienne was telling the other nun about the phone call re the nuns going private. Just didn't flow like it normally would.

Alsohuman · 19/04/2021 21:19

@Clawdy

Was the glimpse of two small girls in school uniform the Doc's daughters? Definitely prep school by the look of those straw boaters! Ooh, Doc, thought you were a socialist! Grin
I was at a state grammar school in the 60s. We had to wear boaters. We got torn off a strip if the staff saw us without them on the way home.

They do from time to time. Remember how kind she was with Chummy's mother?

I like Sr Monica Joan and the way everyone cares for her, making her feel loved and valued.

I just re-watched the beginning and, yes, did see the two Turner girls in their uniforms, swinging their school bags. They looked so cute.

LyndaSnellsSniff · 19/04/2021 21:33

Oh yes SJM has to go. Her storyline just never seems to go anywhere.

Every time Trixie popped up in her new pink uniform, all I could hear was the music that accompanied Barbara Windsor in Carry On Doctor.

TwunchOfBats · 19/04/2021 21:42

I do and really enjoyed that. They just don't seem to have done things like that in the last few series - feels like a long time since SMJ did anything interesting (to me, anyway).

Itwasjustresting · 19/04/2021 21:51

It feels like it has lost its complexity. Trixie used to be a more interesting character with the back story about how she felt the burden of always entertaining and distracting her father, now she’s just a silly clothes horse. Sister Monica Joan is just old (as PP have said!). The round-faced nun is Kind, the pointy-faced nun is Shrewd. Dr Turner is now unbearable.

NeonStones · 19/04/2021 21:58

My god it was wooden. When the father of the stillborn baby did his whole "it was near Christmas Island, Operation Grapple, let me speak extra slowly so you guys don't miss the exposition here" bit I cringed so hard. It's a shame as the story could have been good with some better dialogue. And after so many seasons of babies being whisked away when stillborn I was so glad they didn't do that this time. Although I did find it a bit odd that the change wasn't addressed.

ssd · 19/04/2021 22:55

@Elderflower14

Thankyou for your kind messages. Ds1 was Jack. He was born 26 weeks into my pregnancy... He had a brain haemmorage after he was born so we had to make the decision to let him go... I held him at the end. 😔 😔 😔 I was put back on a private room in the middle of the ward after having him so I could really identify with the Mum hearing the crying through the wall. I was lucky enough to get pregnant again afterwards and had excellent care from my GP and gynaecologist. I have to say I didn't enjoy being pregnant the second time as I was terrified it would happen again. I developed pre eclampsia towards the end and had to have bed rest.. Ds2 is 24 now and a bit of a MN legend. ☺
Wilf?
Clawdy · 19/04/2021 23:02

Alsohuman yes, I was at a girls' grammar school in the sixties too, and we had straw boaters in summer ( maybe the same school! ). But I don't remember a single state primary school from that time, where such a uniform would be worn. Someone may tell me I'm wrong, though!

ferryblue · 19/04/2021 23:58

My mum’s mum lost twin boys in the 70s, they were premature. She had 8 other kids and is quite a stoic personality so just got on with it and never allowed herself to grieve. The grief she’d help for decades ended up coming out when she got dementia in her 80s.

IsolaPribby · 20/04/2021 06:59

I am a huge fan of Call the Midwife, and have enjoyed every episode, and seen need to complain.
I have just watched Sunday's episode, and whilst most of it was spot on, I found that the nun's fashion show really grated on me! I thought it just came out of nowhere, was very cringey, and those outfis were awful!
Did anyone else feel like this?

2021hwg · 20/04/2021 07:24

I just checked and the first series was set in 1957, so nine years have passed. Putting Trixie in mid thirties.

Rockbird · 20/04/2021 07:33

Another huge obsessive fan here but I think it should have finished about four years ago. I still really enjoy it but it's nothing like it was.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 20/04/2021 07:38

Did anyone else play spot the social distancing?

They need to let Sister Monica Joan rest now, but probably can't work out how.
