Is back 18th April. I'm so glad we are getting a series this year, I find it such great escapism.

Is anyone else a fan?

I like the McGann brothers as a family so will tolerate Stephen. And if he's fighting anti-vaxxers then all credit to him!

EdwinPootsLovesArchaeology · 05/05/2021 20:18

Agreed, the McGanns are good on Twitter!

Taswama · 05/05/2021 20:54

Anyone got a link to him on Twitter? I don't do it myself and can never find people when I fancy a look.

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 05/05/2021 21:18

No bother here with the McGanns.

Just Doctor T Grin

I’m not on Twitter sorry. (Fossil)

impostersyndrome · 05/05/2021 21:48

Here you go @Taswama,

twitter.com/stephenmcgann?lang=en

There’s also a fan feed (not me, promise Grin), if you google the name + Twitter.

I agree but I think he is a pretty all round good egg anyway.

I caught a bit of Classic Emmerdale today (never really watched Emmerdale), and he was in it, young and dishy with a different accent. I was impressed.

We mustn't forget that many of the main characters - earlier ones no longer around, those who have been in the series from the start or early on and are still with us), are based on Jennifer Worth's books and the writer/producer did try as far as possible to stick to the characters. I recognised a few from the books, circumstances and details changed for the telly of course; 'Dr Turner' and wife are definitely in there and very like the TV Turners, except the 'real' one didn't marry an ex nun :-).

RevolvingPivot · 06/05/2021 14:08

@Toddlerteaplease

I was a bit Hmmthat the husband of the woman who cheated, was just supposed to accept and be happy with the situation.
I'm just catching up and thought I'd look for the thread to comment on the cheating woman.

The Young nun (can't remember her name) was so angry at the husband.

Do you have no sympathy for your wife
She's left alone while he's at sea
She's a good woman
Wants best for all her children

So because of all of that she can cheat on him and get pregnant by another man. (Assuming no abuse etc).

Can you imagine if it was the other way around and the wife was expected to carry on as usual?

My husband is away until October and being left alone is no excuse.

I felt really bad for him. Being told to put the kettle on and close the door. He kept quite calm.

Also thought the posh husband would have tried it on when he first met Trixie even before they knew his wife was ill. Glad he didn't.

diddl · 06/05/2021 20:39

I did find the glucose tolerance test one a bot odd.

Presumably she hadn't been diabetic before the pregnancy but was overweight?

The rude consultant decided that she was diabetic due to being overweight.

But the diabetes went after her caesarian & she was still in hospital.

I woudn't have expected him to apologise but it would have been nice to see that he was told!

MelissaVonStressel · 07/05/2021 18:08

We've been rewatching Silent Witness, never having seen it from the start before and it's suffered the exact same fate. In the beginning the pathologist is just cutting up dead people but if you watch it now Emilia Fox is cutting people up as well as doing all the forensic work and the police work and the detecting and the interviewing - just like Dr Turner starts off on the periphery in S1 but by S10 he's solving world poverty and all that jazz.

DeusEx · 09/05/2021 16:25

Ok so: I’ve just tried the new series, watched all three current episodes in two days. REALLY enjoying it.

Sheila is very saccharine and Dr Turner is a bloody hypocrite going on about the nuns putting aside their morals for money when he lives in a big house and his kids go to prep school - BUT otherwise really enjoying the way they’re handling the series. Good stories, and I do like young nun and excitable nun. And even Monica Joan seems quite bearable!

DeusEx · 09/05/2021 16:26

@RevolvingPivot I agree ref the sailor husband and cheating wife. It was probably the more heart warming but not particularly realistic option!

As mentioned up thread, the Call the Midwife tours at Chatham Dockyard will be starting again soon and running until 31st October. thedockyard.co.uk/whats-on/call-the-midwife-location-tours/

Who is the mum of the hotel boy? It's driving me nuts.

prampushingdownthehighst · 09/05/2021 20:19

She was in may to december
Beam.me up sooty!

I don’t know but I recognise hotel boy!
PurpleWh1teGreen · 09/05/2021 20:22

Thank you! Yes - that's her.

Sunbird24 · 09/05/2021 20:24

Ooh, get Dr T being all progressive - how likely is that for a doctor in the 60s, does anyone know?

Maireas · 09/05/2021 20:25

Tim will cure haemophilia, I'm guessing.
Dr Turner is now supporting the LGBT community before it was legal! He's a hero!

Maireas · 09/05/2021 20:28

Sadly, being gay was still widely regarded as a sin and a wilful perversion. Dr Turner was well ahead of his time. I've read of very tragic cases where such men never got treatment for fear of repercussions.

theresnoonequitelikegrandma · 09/05/2021 20:28

I know it's the World Cup but....nuns watching football? 🤣🤣

LadyCatLover2 · 09/05/2021 20:29

Is it just me who finds Dr Turner unbelievable? They're trying to insert today's 21st century values and beliefs into a period drama set in the 1960s. I just don't think Many doctors would have openly said 'there's nothing wrong with homosexuality' in a time when it was still illegal...

I also thought his speech about mental health last week a bit stretching. Mental health was not well understood in those days, hell there was still a fair amount of stigma 10-20 years ago.

jay55 · 09/05/2021 20:32

I believe Phylis being no nonsense about it, but not doctor Turner, no.

PurpleWh1teGreen · 09/05/2021 20:32

To some extent, health workers would likely have been more pragmatic than the population as a whole. Not so sure about the nuns though.

Maireas · 09/05/2021 20:32

@LadyCatLover2 - I'm finding it a real stretch. The young man's parents' reactions were more realistic.
