It's surprisingly rated 6th on Netflix in the UK, so wondering how many have watched and if they have any questions about it?

I've only watched the first episode thus far but I'm fairly familiar with the story and I was raised in the LDS church.

the problem with all these frauds, is that when do you stop? when you're comfortable, or wealthy, or super wealthy or ridiculously wealthy? they perhaps engineer their own downfall 🌺

SinkGirl · 13/03/2021 16:56

Oh it’s definitely greed, not to mention a power trip. Feeling smarter than everyone else. Fascinating psychology.

Totally. He easily would have gotten away with it.

I think there is an element that he pushed too hard against the church, and that resulted in them questioning too much. I think if he had played the long game and added much more supportive documents to the church, he would have been able to drop the odd paper for be detriment of the church. The church wasn't sitting on the 150 BILLION is is today, but it was still extremely wealthy and able to purchase a lot more.

It's rumoured he tried to produce the 118 lost pages but that would have been challenging to create identical paper in that quantity.

Fascinating though.

I'll definitely keep watching although I now know what happens! My fault for reading the thread.

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 13/03/2021 17:34

I watched Mormons, slow til second episode and the art fraud, enjoyed both.
However if you have sky documentaries on fraud and crime take a look at McMillions, found it fascinating.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 13/03/2021 17:35

It was interesting.

Sorry. My fault, I should have put a spoiler alert. Still worth watching. I was fairly familiar with it but still really interesting.

superb thank you, noted McMillions and Made You Look ☺️
Rummikub · 13/03/2021 18:30

150 BILLION???
What will they do with all this money?

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 13/03/2021 18:44

WisnaeMe, also on sky docs Class Action Park, probably one of the most WOW documentaries I have ever watched. Both Mc Millions and Class Action Park are ending soon so make sure you watch them soon. Enjoy!

Newnamefor2021 · 13/03/2021 18:56

That's one reason many have left. The church is "generous" that it does spend a few million here and there on charities and donations etc. But the are sitting in a huge pile of money.

They said it's for the last days when they may need it but seriously if the "last days" ever came, money would surely be the least of our worries.

They have a just stock portfolio too, there are lots of questions and concerns over the money but there have not been any real answers.

I'm fairness it's clearly been very good at investments as a lot of wealth has come from their investments, but yes, for a church that tells members to pay 10% of all income to the church before they pay anything else and many leaders have told people to pay their tithing even if it leaves little to nothing to feed their children, I feel the church should answer questions about their wealth.

Are they richer than other churches/ temples? I’d be curious to know.
Islam encourages giving a percentage of your wealth to charity. Whereas Mormons pay the tithe you church?

Rummikub · 13/03/2021 19:39

I’d also be curious to know how he managed to forge the coin to fool the experts. At a young age too!

makes you question the 'Experts'. The FBI authenticated documents too, so there will forever those who believe they are genuine and those who do not.

Bizarre situation. 🌺

Eyjafjallajokulldottir · 13/03/2021 19:47

@Newnamefor2021 not at all, my fault for being too curious Grin I'll still watch it though!

I found it fascinating when the cracked ink was the key.

I found the man in the suit, and sitting in a chair, being interviewed throughout (can’t remember his name) odd.

Blueberries0112 · 13/03/2021 19:54

My dad’s side have a long line of Mormons since the late 1800’s including my dad himself but he wasn’t in it fully. My aunts tried to get me into their church but I never got into it

I think they have the most wealth or a close second. They have a lot of land, real estate, malls, as well as church and temples across the globe. With of course their investment portfolio.

I think it's shook a lot of people. It's made people like my mother mad despite being very devout. She's questioning the sheer extravagance of the temple when there is so much poverty!

A few years ago, well probably 10 now, the church stopped the paid custodians. It was a tiny amount of money, they often paid a ward member for 4 hours work cleaning the chapel, all laid properly etc but then it stopped and now members are expected to clean the buildings, including toilets etc. It's usually assigned to different families and each family gets a date they are expected to clean the chapel. We usually ended up going in around every 4/6 weeks, but they would have different people do half and us half. It's hard to fit in as the faith requires a lot of your time as it is and i always dreaded our weeks as we were already out most nights of the week doing service.

I have just finished this and I found it so interesting! I knew nothing of the story so was thoroughly surprised towards the end of the 2nd ep when we found things out and throughout the 3rd when the interviews were included. I really enjoyed it Smile

Rummikub · 13/03/2021 20:21

It sounds very hard and all consuming.
The Church must be very good at fostering compliance.
I’ve encouraged my children to question and hence they don’t believe in a faith.

It's crazy how compliant I was, I was raised in it and that's my only defiance I suppose.

My children did experience it briefly and our families are still in the religion, one of my children still believes in God, one doesn't and the others don't say anything either way. It's hard as I want them to make their own decisions but equally I don't want them to go down that road.

It's not all bad, but knowing what I do now and knowing how completely indoctrinated I was, it's scary and I don't want that for my children.

The experts thing is fascinating, I guess the only thing they actually found to say there were false is the cracking of the ink. They were pretty invested to prove they were false, no one else sought out to prove it and without all the documents it wouldn't ever have been found probably. Amazing really.
