It’s back!!! Now with extra added Alan Carr!!!

Starts tonight. I didn’t find the first series until well after it finished and binge watched it, enjoyed following the thread on here as I did so but I was way behind the time to contribute anything.

Looking forward to enjoying this series hopefully with some viper chatter as we go along. Come on in, all opinions welcome!

Well I didn't like any of them - I am quite classic when it comes to decor and if I ever had a Beach hut it would be "classic Hamptons with NO twist" Grin. I really disliked Siobhan's and I thought the diner was so predictable - even DD said "Oh God, his reference for the 1950's is Greece !!! "

Not sure who I want to win, since none of the finalists have any interior design expertise. I know we surmised that they are looking for people who create a scene on TV, but surely getting rid of the only designer who studied interior design (last week) is a bit dumbed down.

Does anyone know how the revamp of the Savoy Hotel Bar from last year turned out?

BanditoShipman · 04/03/2021 19:21

I didn’t understand the beach huts, I thought if you are given a phrase your design should have elements of that phrase but not the whole thing like a themed pub! So the ice cream lady did it right, I thought, she took the tones/textures from ice cream and used them. She didn’t put up an ice cream counter or the word ‘ice cream’ on the ceiling, yet the ones who did do that won! They just chucked everything either ‘50s dinner’ or ‘tiki’ and threw it in there!!

I don’t understand at all, so if they said ‘fishing hut vibe’ they should have put nets on the ceiling, blue and white stripes, a bouy on the wall and some dead fish around??

I dread to think what Kevin McCloud would have said!!

lollipoprainbow · 04/03/2021 22:05

@BanditoShipman totally agree ! The brief was confusing, to me the ice cream one was spot on, I personally didn't like the Tropicana or the 50's diner one.

lollipoprainbow · 04/03/2021 22:09

The tiki bar and 50's diner were totally impractical ! The whole idea a beach hut is to come off the beach, change, have a cuppa and relax none of which I could imagine doing in either of these.

NutellaEllaElla · 05/03/2021 07:20

I completely agree. I hated the diner and tiki bar - they were both so cheesy and there really wasn't any design in them. I could've googled American 50's diner and replicated the set of Grease like Paul did.

I didn't realise that they were huts for hire and I suppose the awful themed looks make more sense now.

NutellaEllaElla · 05/03/2021 07:21

I much preferred the great british interior design challenge. These guys ain't even close to masters!

MrsJamin · 05/03/2021 07:35

Ohhhh I had forgotten to check if people were talking about this! Hello.
This bunch aren't as good as the last series, I think. I still think Nicki should have won that though. I can't warm to Charlotte or her designs, I am glad she is gone now. Siobhan is too maximalist for my liking. I don't find orange boy ever wows me. Lindsay should win, she consistently has clever design ideas. I think the woman with curly hair who did the swing in the office went far too early, I was impressed by her too.

ppeatfruit · 05/03/2021 09:16

Just watched the recording of this, I agree with some of you that if they ALL had the same brief it would've sorted them out properly! It wasn't fair that the 2 who had the strongest themes won.

Paul was such a drama llama about a bit of rain by the seaside,!!!! I noticed he hadn't bothered to reglaze that nice old fashioned cupboard that got knocked over in the storm. I liked Lyndseys best, she was clever with storage and colours. Micheala's was the most inviting\comforting looking. (it can rain a lot by the sea you might have to be inside for the whole day!!!)

I think some beach huts now want to play up to the "Insta" crowd, the beach hut management team who run these ones on the front have Mickey / Minnie Mouse style ones who Mrs Hinch rented the Minnie one, which will have really boosted their popularity. Some people will want to rent a hut that they can photograph the shit out of for their grid.

I'd rather have a nice cosy one like Micaela or Lynsey's than a really over the top theme. I think you'd need it to be quite cosy incase it chucked it down all day, at least you could sit somewhere dry and have a coffee.

Dailyhandtowelwash · 05/03/2021 09:57

I imagine there was no time (or budget?) to reglaze. But the shock at rain did feel a bit much given where we live and the fact that it's now clearly autumn. Didn't they check the forecast?

I think the painting of the pink first was definitely because the turquoise is a darker colour, so painting the pink on top would have been much harder to do in the time he had and achieve the same brightness.

Orange boy painted the turquoise first, then the pink over the top and revealed turquoise dots.
Dailyhandtowelwash · 05/03/2021 10:08

Did he?! Point probably stands in that whichever was on the bottom would be the more weakly pigmented colour.

ppeatfruit · 05/03/2021 10:10

Daily He could've tacked a bit of chicken wire on the inside of the cupboard windows. That used to be done a lot!

Dailyhandtowelwash · 05/03/2021 10:13

He could! Although finding chicken wire itself might have been a distraction. I'm not particularly sympathetic to him though as his whinging about the rain was annoying, and as he'd already painted the outside of his hut, he was in a better position than the others anyway.

LemonViolet · 05/03/2021 10:33

He didn’t have to paint the whole shed pink though. He could have just done rough splodges, stickers on, then the turquoise, stickers off, ta-da!

He certainly was\is a whinger. "Oh how could this storm happen by the seaside in Essex ? !!!" Grin

Furbylicious · 05/03/2021 13:51

I was shocked that they liked Siobhan's hut! All the bamboo and grass skirts seemed really impractical for the location. Surely it would be hard to clean and get full of sand and salt spray in summer and dusty/cobwebby when the huts are (presumably) closed over the winter? The massive bamboo props for the canopy looked like a faff as well. I didn't think she had any interesting storage or flexible/moving furniture.

I also thought Paul's was a very mundane interpretation of 50s. I'd have liked to see something fun and kitsch with geometric prints and a more subtle nod to Americana. It just seemed like a themed restaurant to me.

Michaela's was nice but also fairly safe.

Charlotte had a tricky brief. I thought they meant they wanted airy and light but not too much nautical theming. The front of it was more successful than the back green bit. It's also hard when the brief is expensive looking (like the Hamptons) and you've got a small budget. I thought it looked much better in her blog- it was dressed well in her pictures. And she did have some natural materials in the wicker baskets so it was mean of them to say there wasn't any!

I loved Lindsay's, her storage was so practical and the peg board was really original. The only criticism seemed to be the black highlight colours. I've got a feeling she's going next and I shall be very sad! I think she's been strong throughout

ppeatfruit · 05/03/2021 14:38

I did like those bamboo chairs with cushions outside Sioban's hut tiki bar, they actually looked comfortable.

Yes Furby Lindsey's ice cream place was nice, the judges were very picky.

MrsJamin · 05/03/2021 20:00

If lyndsey goes before Michaela I'll be annoyed. I don't think she's particularly talented across the board.

Beebumble2 · 05/03/2021 20:42

Saw Charlotte’s hut on a rental site before she ‘did’ it. The owner must be mad! It was lovely before. Do you think they had to put it back to what it was before?

mummyofcutetwo · 08/03/2021 01:52

I've just caught up with the series and I can't believe the two beach hut "winners"! So tacky and cliché, with little practicality.

The other three were beautiful and I'd happily spend a rainy day in any of them (though Lynsey's was my favourite, and I don't little pastels myself!).

I got the sense that Michelle was wanting to find any reason to keep Siobhan in and any reason to get rid of Charlotte.
