Who’s in? I watched series 1 again last week in preparation!

Acting is precarious. Hard for women the older they get. Usually Alex Kingston would have been a lead a in the past. IIRC Holly Aird had a child with James Purefoy (years ago) who plays Phillipe (Matthew's father).

I like this season. I think the Diana actress is a lot better than she was in Season 1 (she gets to be more assertive this season). However, I do think it's noticeable how the Matthew actor really holds everything together as the episodes in the present where he doesn't appear are weak. The acting seems stilted and unbelievable. The witch aunties in their twee woollens are very annoying.

Fun fact : an actor who starred in a mini series called Gallowglass is in the cast of Discovery of Witches 2

I've watched all of season 2... not sure if I liked it or not!
I found the present day story better than Matthew and Diane's.

Not sure why people are comparing to Outlander... completely different.

He was also in a series of Being Human as a vampire. Domenico actor was also in Being Human, not a vampire but as an abusive bf and murderer.

I binged all of it the first weekend it was out and enjoyed it greatly. I'm really surprised so many preferred Season 1, I felt that S1 was quite wooden but this one much less so. Generally well cast but I thought gallowglass would be bigger. Grin

Being Human is one of my favourite TV series of all time. I don't rmember Domenico being in it and who was the other actor?

NeonBella · 18/01/2021 16:36

I binged season 2 this week and I loved it!

It's nowhere near as good as the book, so much has been left out but the most important bits for the story are in there.

The costumes are simply beautiful! And Gallowglass is wonderful.
Another favorite character is Marcus. I loved seeing more of him.

I'm now sad that it's probably going to be over a year before the next season 😣

SapatSea · 18/01/2021 16:46

Justherewithmypopcorn Paul Rhys was in Gallowglass, he was Ivan, one of the "Old Ones" and a mate of Mitchell's in Being Human. He plays the priest vampire, Hubbard in a DOW, looks very different to usual suave self.

Domenico actor played Annies boyfriend Owen in Series 1 of BH

notawittyname1954 · 18/01/2021 22:12

@JustHereWithMyPopcorn thanks for pointing out about Domenico in Being Human. I loved that show. the first three series with Aidan Turner were the best but I still enjoyed the others.

SapatSea · 19/01/2021 09:23

Who's the best vampire - Matthew or Mitchell? Old Herrick would give po faced Gerbert a run for his money.

Watching DOW made me think about Being Human. I used to watch it and Misfits with my older DC - happy times.

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 19/01/2021 09:26

I loved the books and was so disappointed in series 1 it didn't live up to my expectations at all, it seemed so rushed with no character development. However I think series 2 was much better.

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 19/01/2021 13:12

I think I’m preferring Matthew to Mitchell. He has that stillness that seems part of the character really well.

It wasn't me @notawittyname1954 it was SapatSea.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 19/01/2021 15:54

Mitchell was the best vampire, too cool for school. Grin I also loved Hal despite thinking I wouldn't.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 19/01/2021 15:55

Herrick terrified me. Grin

Don't get me wrong, I like Matthew (mainly in Elizabethan get up if I'm honest!) but I don't like his growling. It makes me cringe. Still really enjoyed it though.
MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 19/01/2021 18:34

Growling is from the book, so although a bit strange is true to the book characterisation.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn Grin I agree MItchell was "toocool for school". The guy that has it all, you want to hate but who you can't help but like despite yourself.

I think Aidan Turner and Matthew Goode both make very good Vampires. I read somewhere that Richard Armitage was a fan favourite to be Matthew.

Diana is pretty chill with all the horrors that her new Vampire family have been involved with in the past. Pretty hypocritical of the De Clairmonts to volunteer to eradicate all vampires with blood rage and then not cull your own. Hard to feel sympathy for Philippe being tortured when he was obviously no saint and a mass killer himself.

Matthew's "Elizabethan costume" makes me smile - he has the doublet and ruff but then straight leg modern leather trousers when other blokes are running around in more baggy knickerbocker style pants. Would he not have been expected to wear short bulbous pants to court? I like Matthew's cloak it looks really soft and made from a mohair blend.

katy1213 · 19/01/2021 21:09

It really is as bad as the reviews promise! Shame to see Lindsay Duncan and Sheila Hancock stooping so low - but guess it pays well!
