Who’s in? I watched series 1 again last week in preparation!

I'm not enjoying it at all. I am stopping at episode 3. It looks to me like every one is over acting, it doesn't feel natural. It is not even 2% as good as Outlander.

catsmother · 10/01/2021 12:24

I've watched all of S2 already but agree it didn't seem as good as S1.

Being mindful of spoilers I did actually enjoy Sheila Hancock because she brought the required gravitas and wisdom to the role IMO and simply because it's rare to see older actresses in parts which aren't stereotypical doddery old ladies. However, I found myself getting very frustrated with the sound quality on a regular basis. Don't know if anyone else has experienced this?.... particularly during conversations between Matthew and Diana, I kept having to rewind to properly catch what they'd said.

I'd been so looking forward to this but feel disappointingly underwhelmed I guess.

SunburstsOrMarbleHalls · 10/01/2021 15:43

catsmother I had the same issue with sound particularly when the musical score seemed to drown out the conversation. I went on the sound settings on my tv and their was an option for "clear voice" and that resolved the issue but had to reset this when I finished watching the series.

Obviously depending on the brand of your tv it will have different sound settings but if you try different options you may find one that helps.

*there Blush

cushioncovers · 10/01/2021 16:15

On epi 5 now of series 2 and it's being yo get better imo.

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 10/01/2021 22:35

I’m enjoying it so far-not noticing sound issues but watch on my iPad with ear pods. Ido like the juxtaposition of modern day and 1500s though. I don’t think you get that in the books.

Loved series one but so far (ep 3) series 2 is hard going - partly it being filmed entirely in the dark & partly the fact that everyone is so bloody miserable the entire time & its soooo slow. I mean I’ll watch any old supernatural shit, even just persevered though 5 series of Fringe...but I’m not sure I’ll stick with this dirge!

EmmaJR1 · 11/01/2021 08:32

@MrsElijahMikaelson1

Have just downloaded the books to my kindle but am going to watch first-I often find if I’ve read the book first, that films/TV reproductions seem rubbish in comparison.
I am a massive fan of the books. I have read them so many times.

Season 1 of the tv show I thought was great but casting wasn't too good. Season 2 has deviated so far from the book I find myself constantly annoyed when watching it.

Definitely save the books for after you have finished watching in my opinion.

cushioncovers · 11/01/2021 09:52

Agree about the casting. Quite a few of the cast just doesn't seem to suit the characters imo.

MiriamShepherd · 11/01/2021 11:52

I’ve read the books and really enjoyed them, I knew the series wouldn’t be the same at all. The books are so detailed that can’t translate to screen, I’ve finished binge watching season 2 now and I loved every second of it. It was exactly what it should be I especially loved that they showed modern day alongside the past because I found myself wondering in the books what happened. Incidentally they’ve taken Marcus and Pheobe’s story line from Times Convert which was a nice touch I thought.

HoldingForGeneralHugs · 11/01/2021 12:00

Im up to episode 7, i finished the second book a couple of months ago so its still fresh.

I like how they have done it (changing timelines around and stuff) though do find some bits slow going?

Im glad its 10 episodes too, the more Matthew Goode the better 😁

doadeer · 11/01/2021 12:34

I think the casting is really excellent!

Scaredykittycat · 11/01/2021 12:39

I found S2 E1 really boring after loving S1. Hoping it improves. I’ve read the books so I know how good it will be.

LooseMooseHoose · 11/01/2021 12:40

I can recommend the Audible adaptation of these if anyone wants more detail than the TV show provides, but doesn't want to read the books.

WithASpider · 11/01/2021 12:45

I've watched it all now, binged with DH! I adore the books and have read them several times, wasn't impressed at all with season 1. Season 2 is better but still fairly frustrating. I can see why they've had to adapt parts of it though.

Gallowglass is great, looking forward to seeing more of him!

@stumbeldin The actor that plays Kit Marlowe also plays Prince Albert in Victoria.

WithASpider · 11/01/2021 12:47

@stumbledin - sorry, bad spelling Blush

notawittyname1954 · 11/01/2021 15:28

@stumbledin The actor who plays Kit is Tom Hughes and he does seem to play posh boys.

PerfidiousAlbion · 11/01/2021 18:26

Ive read the books (twelve months ago) and listened to the audio books too so feel a little confused by what's happening but I appreciate why they've done it and I love the fact that they're running a modern day storyline alongside it too.

There's something off about it though and i cant quite put my finger on what.

Every outdoor scene seems very bright and the streets seem remarkably clean too, as do people, even street urchins and beggars. When Diana and Matthew are in their house, there's no other noise from inside the (shared) house or outside and no shadows or movement going past the windows either. There are hardly any real fires, the candles look fake mostly and there's hardly any smoke.

I am enjoying Matthew in his leather trousers though Grin and I agree that its great to see older actresses in important roles. Apart from the Em and Sarah trio. I Find them extremely irritating.

PerfidiousAlbion · 11/01/2021 18:27

Duo not trio!

stumbledin · 11/01/2021 20:26

Thanks for the Kit Marlowe update.

So he not only plays posh contemporary boys, but posh German men who have difficulty with being married to an uppity woman!

Of course he may be brilliant but just type cast.

years and years ago I saw a film with Hugh Grant playing a really unpleasant manager of a touring acting group. He was totally convincing! But dont think he has every had a part like that again.

Is it a floppy hair bias by casting directors?!

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 16/01/2021 23:32

I am loving the books! Surprisingly, I add, as not really my usual reading so thought I’d hate them.

I am also loving Matthew and his leather trousers! He is simply divine!😍

Who is the actress playing the housekeeper in Matthew and Kit's house.? I looked on imdb and couldn't find her. She looks so familiar!

DilysMoon · 17/01/2021 10:11

Holly Aird, she looked really familiar to me too.

Hippywannabe · 17/01/2021 11:30

That's her. Crikey, she was always the lead actress before, she's brilliant. Did she take a screen break?
