Anyone else a bit disappointed tonight? I mean, the series haven't been brilliant - and I'm sick of Daleks - but this was just...meh. Too many Maguffins & Deus Ex Machina.

I realise filming was probably affected by CV19 but I felt a bit deflated by it.

Thank you for this thread.

It’s confirmed to me that I can’t be arsed with any more episodes. I might have given it a go if it was going to be just the Doctor & Yaz.

TheLevyEyebrowsFancIub · 02/01/2021 23:20

Tardis came in to find out how we were feeling about Dan the man.
Not excited by the looks of things. We did have Rose, Mickey and Doctor so a triangle might be okay as Yaz is sulky and unrequited atm. Still love Captain Jack. Will always love The Barrowman.

Definitelyrandom · 03/01/2021 09:46

What struck me was that there have been various large scale dalek invasions of earth, and particularly London, over the years and yet no-one recognised the drones as having dalek casing and went “hang on.....”

"What struck me was that there have been various large scale dalek invasions of earth, and particularly London, over the years and yet no-one recognised the drones as having dalek casing and went “hang on...."

In Matt Smith's first series the universe was reset due to the cracking the wall. After that, it was as if what went before hadn't happened.

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 03/01/2021 11:42

Think the darleks been overused now. The first new series when they came back and could climb stairs was creepy. Now its a case of oh them again!

Samcro · 03/01/2021 11:51

can't stand the new doctor.
Love John Bishop so looking forward to him.

iklboo · 03/01/2021 12:17

I never found the Daleks scary, even as a kid.

The Stones Of Blood on the other hand...terrified.

I just think it's lazy keeping bring Daleks back. They're defeated every single time (I know that's the point of Doctor Who but you think they'd give up & conquer somewhere easier).

I'd like a new enemy altogether. I'm sure all these professional writers can come up with something between them.

"The Stones Of Blood on the other hand...terrified."

I found that really scary. No one except me ever remembers them - at one point I was convinced I must have made them up. I'm glad someone else remembers them!!

iklboo · 03/01/2021 13:56

@rosy71 - I had to ask DH to buy the series to prove I hadn't made them up either.

Mutunus · 03/01/2021 16:19

Weeping Angels were a bit scary (although totally improbable).

iklboo · 03/01/2021 16:31

True mutunus - like extreme What Time Is It Mr (Bad) Wolf.

murbblurb · 03/01/2021 18:21

just a bit dull - as I'm afraid has been the case since late in the Matt Smith era. Unevenly paced, very badly mixed (lots of inaudible dialogue) and not enough plot for the length. Whittaker is perfectly acceptable as the doctor but the stories are just so, so tedious.

good riddance to wooden Ryan (SO glad to see him go, ok a very dull character but that bloke simply can't act) and one-trick-pony Graham. Yaz is played by the one who can act, and held her own against John Barrowman. If any of this lot are staying, at least it is her.

not sure how the next stunt casting will work out, but if the writing doesn't improve it won't matter.

I would no longer be sad if Who finishes; and after watching for 40 plus years, that's a shame.

Her last series...Still dont help with the writing though

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 03/01/2021 22:38

If true..

PoulePouletteEternellement · 04/01/2021 16:19

@lazylinguist

I just find the current doctor and her 'fam' a bit cringeworthy tbh, compared with the cool quirkiness of David Tennant and Matt Smith. Wasn't a big fan of Peter Capaldi as the Doctor either (though he's good in other things). It's not the actors, it's the writing.
True dat.

Some of it was ok, prison particularly. But the stopping every so often for mutual therapy and arm stroking is just - eurgh.

I was a bit confused by Yaz - is she supposed to be in love with the Doctor? Strange emoting, even for the greatest friend gone missing.

And could they really not have come up with some interesting exit for the other two? That surely merited a whole exciting episode.

After decades of watching I'm running out of patience. It needs to get back to being good really soon.

Giggorata · 04/01/2021 16:31

I wish Chris Chibnail would collaborate with some Whovian writers, to critique ideas and scripts.

To kick off the wild speculation about the new Doctor, I would love it to be Michael Sheen.
Mackenzie Crook, Joseph Gilgun, Maxine Peake or Richard Ayoade would also be excellent choices.

PoulePouletteEternellement · 04/01/2021 16:36

It occurred to me yesterday that Michaela Coel is probably now too expensive. She'd make a staggeringly good Doctor. (Particularly if they let her write and direct the scripts too!)

iklboo · 04/01/2021 16:48

And could they really not have come up with some interesting exit for the other two? That surely merited a whole exciting episode.

Oh yes!

'Are you coming Ryan & Graham?'
' Nah, we can't be arsed'
'Oh, okay then. Bye. I won't mind wipe you though, here's some psychic paper'

Fworp, fworp, fworp.

Oh micheal sheen would be amazing

TinaTurnercorner · 04/01/2021 17:46

I agree they have wasted good actors on piss poor story lines I mean WTF was that guitar playing episode all about? And bill "im only attracted to women" potts WE KNOW YOU'RE GAY OKAY and its fine just stop telling us now

^^ this.

BTW if you want scary, look at the closing scene of the 1st episode of The Sensorites! Scariest thing EVER. (to me, anyway).

As for Doctor casting, I'm with Barbra Broccoli on her views about James Bond casting. If I could find the thing Id link it.

Romana? Rani? Thalia? Chancellor Flavia? Susan?

and John Bishop? Really? ! Desperate or what?

TinaTurnercorner · 04/01/2021 17:48

Oh micheal sheen would be amazing

Cant stand the guy but agree about the casting him.

Oh forgot another time lady.
Jenny? that would be a good spin-off a-la Sarah Jane adventures.

TheTigersBride · 04/01/2021 18:46

Yaz is played by the one who can act

She does a good plank of wood. And on the New Year special she did a good sulky plank of wood.

Her scene where she was supposed to be holding her own with Captain Jack was embarrassingly bad. He was acting- she was reading lines from an off scene autocue.

EmpressWitchDoesntBurn · 07/01/2021 19:00

I started watching it to see if it really was that bad. Got bored & switched off when they went to Japan.

PoulePouletteEternellement · 08/01/2021 02:59

Well!

Why is no one talking about this?:

Michaela Coel is currently the favourite to replace JW.

With RA second in the running.

Someone hand me my medal ...

VashtaNerada · 08/01/2021 04:47

I feel really sorry for JW. She’s an excellent Doctor but hasn’t been given the chance to shine. I want the show to get proper funding again and (I can dream) Russell T Davies back as a show runner and Stephen Moffatt back as one of the main scriptwriters. The episodes made by the two of them were just excellent and would have allowed her to be as incredible as I think she can be. And I think with more support and more funding Chris Chibnall could have gotten into the swing of things and started knocking out some excellent episodes. It’s so piecemeal at the moment he’s not really had a chance.
So feeling a bit meh at the thought of a new Doctor tbh because JW is such an incredible actor and they haven’t really used her properly.
