I've watched two episodes. Should I continue?
I really can't stand Mia Warren aka pearls mum. I hate her snarl she does at anything, I hate she acts so awkwardly and is a bitch to people being kind to her..

I really didn't like this programme. Admittedly I haven't read the book so that may be different. But didn't find it at all believable. Especially the ending.

FrangipaniBlue · 31/12/2020 00:05

Keep watching.

I don't think I have EVER had such a visceral reaction and hatred towards a made up character as I did Reese Witherspoons by the end!!

Haha oh really? Suppose I'll keep going then. Igor to episode five last night and I'll not manage any tonight but I kinda have a feeling like I just want to get it over with. I hate not finishing a TV series.

Glad others agree re. the snarl. It's just weird.

I agree Reese's character I think was just trying to help 🤔

Also Mia tells pearl the white girl is using her and she should accept the dress.
Well that's a bit hypocritical since she's accepting money and jobs from them!
Also, why not just let her have the bike and dress? Why would she prefer her daughter to have a dress from a charity shop? Ugh it's just pissing me off!

I thought it was one of the best TV show I watched this year. Agree Pearl is unlikable, but wow is she beautiful!

Titsinknicks · 31/12/2020 09:06

There's a bit of a difference between accepting money to do a job and accepting random things don't you think?
And Reece's character trying to help - why is that? Why might Mia be pissed off? What roles do you think race and privilege and sex and gender and stuff like that might be playing?

It's different to the book but I thought it was adapted very well.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 31/12/2020 09:10

The tv show is much better than the book (which never happens!). None of the characters are 100% likeable but that's sort of the point.

It's Mia I hate. I like pearl.

As pearl say to her mother "you could have got a job anywhere" and mia says she wanted to keep an eye on her to watch she doesn't get too close with the family! So she didn't take it for money actually.

Elena saw a single mum and daughter struggling and wanted to help. That's all I see. If Mia is patronised by that then she should accept her help. But lo, she does...

OP posts:
Horehound · 31/12/2020 10:35

Shouldn't* accept her help obvs

Read the book, her character makes more sense.

Have you watched to the end? It becomes clear at the end why Mia took such an interest in the family.

Nope. Remember I was asking if I should continue watching it because I really dislike her!

Ah ok. Well, I can't promise that you will like her by the end, you may. You may not. B8t as a series it's worth sticking with til the end.

Horehound · 02/01/2021 23:28

Ok I finished it. I'd say it did get better from episode five. But so many unanswered questions!

How is Izzy Gona live?!
I think Bebe was wrong to take mai ling. I mean at the end she was holding her in her car. What is she going to do with a one year old and on the run?! Not good.
Did Elena go to prison?!

@Horehound
"No, I get that but theres just something so totally unbelievable about the way she acts. It's just bizarre really."

Just binged watched the whole series last night and i do not like Mia Warren. Very weird facial expressions.. I just cant justify her actions n the way she behaves is as if the whole world has wronged her.

Horehound · 03/01/2021 16:02

I know. I definitely preferred younger Mia. But yes the facial expressions are bizarre.

AnjouPear · 03/01/2021 16:09

OP you should read the book! It's better (IMO) than the TV version. The characters are more nuanced and Mia is a very different character.

AnjouPear · 03/01/2021 16:12

Her other book is excellent too (but upsetting - it deals with the death of a teenager). It's called Everything I Never Told You.

MrsSchadenfreude · 03/01/2021 16:13

I thought the tv series was better than the book! Mia’s race is not given in the book, do people just assume she is white.

Starlightstarbright1 · 03/01/2021 16:16

I loved it. Binge watched most if it

Schoolisback1973 · 04/01/2021 00:48

Episode 4: I don't get MIA. So Self-righteous whilst treating people like crap, so ungrateful, so hypocritical!
Really don't like the character

Horehound · 04/01/2021 10:22

Yep. I know, she is terrible! Along with the characters actions not making sense it is also acted terribly.

I'd say it does get a bit better from now though @Schoolisback1973

That facial twitch/snarl thing that Kerry Washington does looks really... uncomfortable? I've not watched her in anything else, does anyone know if that's her natural expression? Or an act for this specific part? 'Cause it seemed so affected in this character.

I found this portrayal of Mia super annoying, the book version is a lot more calm as PP says and far more believable.

And as far as I can remember, in the book, only Izzy is involved (not all the kids) at the end? Trying to be vague as I don't want to spoil it for anyone. If so, why include them and change all those characters so much?!

Horehound · 04/01/2021 11:21

I also haven't seen her in anything else but I imagine the snarl is just for this show...surely?! But even then I don't know why.

And just being so awkward conversationally etc you just wouldn't be like that .
