I love foreign dramas. Been a few recently

Icelandic drama

An ex drug dealer is found murdered in the okd harbour area of Reykjavik

Detective Katrin investigates

Something very odd about Oslo detective. How old would he be? Why him to be drafted in? There seems to be history between him and Reykjavik senior police man.

stumbledin · 22/11/2020 15:56

Mediocre with a plot so similar to so many others. I want a dective story about the detecting, not about troubled souls with difficult family lives who work for the police.

But fascinated by how clean Iceland's roads are! And how in one scene there is snow and in other there is only snow of the mountain tops.

And - lovely big sub titles!

midsomermurderess · 24/11/2020 20:16

I didn't find it that engaging. I seem to be in a minority too when it comes to Iceland. I know that geologically it's fascinating, but it looks beak and ugly to me. And the domestic architecture is so ugly too. Warm, I'm sure, but ugly. And I do wish in these dramas someone would put some bloody lights on. In a region famous for it's stylish lighting, it's always so bloody gloomy. I am working my way through The Bridge series 3 and am glad to see 4 is up too. Now that is classy tv.

BeBraveAndBeKind · 25/11/2020 08:30

I'm hoping that it's not going to turn out to be the 'children's home' cliché. They did that quite well in Hinterland but something more original would be good.

I've just binged watched the first three series of The Bridge and it's amazing. I'm now two episodes into series four and I don't want it to end but, equally, can't make myself turn it off.

Blondeshavemorefun · 26/11/2020 02:59

Thoight I has replied after watching e2

Does see to be hinting at children’s home ......

Are the eyes cut as they saw something but didn’t report it

Is it someone in the photo so one of the ‘children’now adult doing the killing

Hence they would know/trust them then whoosh get stabbed

I love The Bridge and am sad I'm on the final season. I'm not feeling Valhalla in the same way. The accent is making it hard, but I'm just not warming to any characters. I'll keep watching as I want to know whodunnit, but also the scenery is stunning.

Skipsurvey · 28/11/2020 05:00

i wonder if The Bridge was so successful they try and copy the format, this hasnt hooked me

IcedPurple · 28/11/2020 17:22

Anyone going to watch tonight?

I'll watch, but I agree with others that it's not that great. It's kind of 'Scandi crime drama by numbers'.

  • Ambitious detective with complicated family life.
  • Conflicts with higher-ups
  • Somewhat suspicious new colleague
  • Lots of darkness and isolated locations
  • Possible child abuse motive (yawn!)

The detective's son has to have some sort of connection to it all, doesn't he? He's getting a lot of screen time.

Blondeshavemorefun · 28/11/2020 20:47

I will attempt to watch tonight but tired and worked past 5 nights

ageingdisgracefully · 28/11/2020 21:10

Checking in.

Apparently Tolkien based Middle Earth on Iceland's scenery.

longtompot · 28/11/2020 23:06

I watched again. It is much tenser in some scenes than The Bridge, but the camera is so shaky sometimes, and I don't think that's artistic licence.
It is quite interesting how the case and how the boys ended up in the home are mirroring potentially what could happen to her son. I wonder if he did film, or if maybe he lent his hoodie to a friend? It was a bit of a triggering episode to me when she was talking to the young girl about her attack (I didn't have the same thing happen, or to the same extent, but some things were similar).

BeBraveAndBeKind · 28/11/2020 23:17

The chap that was murdered in tonight's episode seemed to be packing up a whole load of evidence about what had happened at the home but they don't seem to have looked at anything.

The red hoodie could be a red herring. It's not that unusual for a boy to have a red hoodie. There's obviously a bit of an issue between Kata and her mother too.

IcedPurple · 29/11/2020 14:18

These 2 episodes were better, but I'm finding it a bit confusing at times (probably just me). I don't think Kata's son will turn out to have been the 'boy in the red hoodie'. It's too obvious.

SagaNorenMalmoCID · 29/11/2020 14:23

Why don't BBC put all episodes on iPlayer immediately so people can watch it when they want ... so annoying.

IcedPurple · 29/11/2020 14:25

I kind of like the 'old-fashioned' way of having to wait each week for the episodes. I wouldn't like it for everything, but it makes a nice change. Besides, this isn't so enthralling that I feel the need to binge watch!
Blondeshavemorefun · 29/11/2020 15:19

I like no I player till finished

No binging or spoilers

I'm going to try Valhalla. OP - The Bridge is superb - I'm a recent convert as one rainy day I decided to see what all the fuss was about and thankfully started with Ep1/Series1 and pretty much all TV time since (and probably more TV time than usual) was spent Boxsettin the whole 4 series.

Any incredulity at some of the drama is suspended because the character development is so very engaging.

Tack

2Rebecca · 29/11/2020 19:57

I reckon the surgeon will have been killed by the sexual abuser presumably a police man because he was planning to whistle blow. It is getting silly how often they let criminals get away by not covering the exits and wandering round on their own unarmed for no obvious reason

rosegoldwatcher · 30/11/2020 12:00

Another one here shouting at the screen, "Turn the lights on FFS!"

Especially when (morose) Detective Arnar was walking around the dark house of the recently stabbed man, with only a tiny torch to light his way.

cosmopolitanplease · 30/11/2020 13:05

I've only watched the first episode and I'm not sure I'll carry on watching- I was hoping one of you would tell me but I've just realised the whole series isn't up yet, how old fashioned Smile

I really enjoyed Wisting and hoped this might be similar but I'm not convinced. As a pp mentioned it all looks bleak and cold and unappealing.

Also OP I'm sorry to hear you're a little dead. Thanks

Blondeshavemorefun · 30/11/2020 17:16

I thought it was a care home

Why was the man on the bus there , if he said his parents came to visit but they locked in him in his room
Abs said he was horse riding

OP posts:
BeBraveAndBeKind · 30/11/2020 17:47

It seemed to be similar to a social care home for parents that were struggling to cope.

I remembered today that the series opened with Kata in the boot of a car and we're still in the 'eight days previously' flashback.

Blondeshavemorefun · 30/11/2020 18:00

Oh yes forgot she was kidnapped ans in boot

So a care home /respite ?

I’m Enjoying it

And yes turn the lights on ffs

OP posts:
IcedPurple · 30/11/2020 18:17

Never turning on lights is straight out of the Scandi noir book of cliches.

Remember Sarah Lund in her Faroese jumper, venturing into dark dungeons equipped only with a torch?

And I see Kata's boss is talking about taking her off the case, so there's another cliche ticked off. Has there ever been a crime series where the lead detective has not been taken off the case at some point?

Blondeshavemorefun · 30/11/2020 19:09

Is one of the detectives in the photo ..,,,
