(I didn’t see another thread)

Is anyone else watching?

OP posts:

But to me that scene was difficult because Lyra has just said that she is nothing like her mother, and then proceeds to act just like her!

chillied · 08/12/2020 07:00

Maybe she does have elements of her mother's character but she can't see that/admit it to herself?

EllieQ · 08/12/2020 07:41

@IsolaPribby

Yes, it was hard to watch. That’s why she’s so horrified in the final scene with Will in Cittegazze, because she was acting like her mother, even though it was necessary to get the alethiometer.

I’m really enjoying having a week between each episode - it gives you time to think about what happened, rather than rushing through to see what happens next.

HMSSophie · 08/12/2020 08:21

Apologies to all. I wasn't thinking.

IsolaPribby · 08/12/2020 08:49

I read the books quite some time ago, but remember them being quite strange in places, with bits of story line which didn't go anywhere. This series seems much more condensed, which is not a bad thing.

Honeyroar · 13/12/2020 20:34

Anyone else watching tonight?

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 13/12/2020 20:38

My children and I are getting annoyed at this episode. I've accepted the way they've run the story lines alongside each other but this time the fact lyra hadn't yet met Serafina and things like that are grating on me. The witches wanting to take her back to their world for example...

AaronPurr · 13/12/2020 21:08

Do we only have one episode left? I feel like there's so much still to go, and i'm not sure how they're going to fit it all in.

Shock
Honeyroar · 13/12/2020 21:45

Yes last one next week.

Igneococcus · 14/12/2020 06:49

but this time the fact lyra hadn't yet met Serafina

Do they meet earlier on in The Subtle Knife? I can't remember that, it's a while that I read the book but I thought the witches rescuing them from the children was the first time they see each other again in the book.
I wonder if we get at least a glimpse of Lord Asriel.

PaddyF0dder · 14/12/2020 07:01

Last nights episode was a bit slow. Felt like padding.

A bit concerned that there’s no confirmation of season 3 yet. Given the first two seasons finished filming maybe 18 months ago. They’d be wanting to get cracking before the actors age out of the roles.

PoulePouletteEternellement · 14/12/2020 07:54

Goodness, yes - they really need to have The Amber Spyglass wrapped up.

Although, quite how they'll portray some of the main characters therein is a mystery!

Thimbleberries · 14/12/2020 08:24

I read that much of The subtle Knife was filmed at the same time as the first series, kind of in parallel (though to me, Lyra looks older!), and it was pre-Corona, and that they're having to wait now to be able to film the next one. It is still supposed to be on the cards, though.

I found this one a bit disjointed. Little scenes like the girls asking Mary for a hug, seemed a bit randomly dropped in for emotional effect.

I did like the scene with Mrs Coulter making the spectres go away, though. And it was so obvious what was coming when Boreal said that he saw her as an equal! Even though I didn't remember that bit from the book (it's been a long time). His daemon didn't disappear in the smoke puff the way I expected, though. I thought he might still be useful to her as he seems to know more about where the windows to new worlds are, so I thought she'd have kept him around.

CodenameVillanelle · 14/12/2020 08:27

Boreal's daemon did disappear, the camera panned out and it wasn't a focal point but it did

AaronPurr · 14/12/2020 08:29

Yes that seemed to come out of nowhere, and I was confused when Mary said she would take them to their parents in the hills. If they'd have wanted to go wouldn't they have left already?

I also found the huge gang of children quite odd, we've barely seen anyone other than the 2 girls / older brother, and then suddenly there's about 30 of them.

dalrympy · 14/12/2020 08:30

Yes I was waiting for the snake to go up in a puff of dust. It was a bit sloppy to leave that out as it leaves you wondering if he is actually dead.

Do love how she finishes the crate of wine before leaving. DD said that's the sort of thing I would do "to not waste the good wine" 🤭

CodenameVillanelle · 14/12/2020 08:36

Here is the snake going up in a puff of smoke but it's faint

We were confused by the Serafina meeting Lyra for the first time in tonight too: I must say I've not been bothered by the changes from the book to date: I feel like all the changes (esp the daemon fight scene, although I agree I hated watching it) have very much revealed things about the characters and felt 'coherent' - which is unlike me as I'm usually a stickler for accuracy to the book. The daemon dying did have a puff of smoke: it was maybe too subtle though. I did love the clues to the protection of Mary from the spectres ( I do struggle not to call them dementors!) and think Ruth Wilson is putting in the most brilliant performance as Mrs Coulter: we love her! Have Phillip Pullman been involved in the adaptation: does anyone know?

dementedma · 14/12/2020 08:41

I thought this was a great episode. Mrs C back to her evil best. Top witches and the first appearance of the angels. I also must give a shout out to the girl playing the lead child in Cittegazze. I think she's tremendous. Creepy without hamming it up

AaronPurr · 14/12/2020 08:44

( I do struggle not to call them dementors!)

You're not alone, they're called dementors in our house. 🤣

AlexaShutUp · 14/12/2020 08:48

Smile DD knows her and she is not only very talented but also very nice and very modest.

CountFosco · 14/12/2020 09:24

We love Angelica here as well, love seeing 'Mildred' in such a different role Grin.

Not looking forward to next week though (especially knowing they haven't filmed series 3 yet, why didn't they do all 3 one after the other???) though it might persuade DD1 to finish reading the books to find out what happens in The Amber Spyglass.

AlexaShutUp · 14/12/2020 09:32

She was in GoT too (though we never watched that). Smile

I am gutted that next week is the last one and now I'm feeling anxious about season 3. They can't just leave it hanging at the end of the Subtle Knife, can they? Worried about Lyra and Will getting too old for their roles!

poorbuthappy · 14/12/2020 09:58

It's just wonderful and the tele highlight of our week. Me and the 3 kids sit down and don't move (although we did jump last night!)

I am also very very sad that it's the last episode next week - but I am also looking forward to watching it all over again from the start of season 1.

FlibbertyGiblets · 14/12/2020 10:17

The Shaman mumbles too much, Jopari. Soooo irritating. That aside another glorious episode. Don't want it to end next Sunday!
