Anyone else watched this?

I've binged it over the weekend and really enjoyed it!

Loved the 60s vibe as well.

Really enjoying this! Only on episode 5 as I don’t want this to end so limiting my viewing to an episode a night. Great acting and loving the early 1960s fashion and the unconventional Beth.

My dd1 loves to play chess and always beat the boys she played at school; many didn’t enjoy this and would flip over the chess board or swipe off all the pieces and storm off, so it’s nice to see most characters shake Beth’s hand when she wins. Her win at the school competition against Dudley Dursley (developing into a fine actor; heartbreakingly brilliant in the ballad of buster scruggs) was superb, we were on the edge of our seats!

AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii · 15/11/2020 12:10

Benny was also played the Reed boy in game of thrones!

Strawberrycreamsundae · 15/11/2020 12:13

I seem to be the only person who hasn’t enjoyed watching it.
I have watched 3 episodes but it’s not doing anything for me.

GooseberryTart · 15/11/2020 12:16

We started watching this with low expectations and didn’t expect to get beyond the first episode. But ended up absolutely loving it (even though I don’t know the first thing about chess).

MmeD · 15/11/2020 19:23

Loved it. Used to play chess as a child and teenager; it made me wish I’d kept at it, but I hated being so conspicuous. Hopefully it’ll get a few more girls into it!

Mooserp · 17/11/2020 07:36

Haven't watched it all so I've skimmed over the posts to avoid spoilers.

I'm enjoying it with the exception of Benny. When he first appeared I thought he was a youngster with a fake moustache and wearing an assortment of his dad's clothes to pretend he was older then he is. I find it really off putting to watch him as the rest of the show is so beautifully presented

Bluntness100 · 17/11/2020 07:40

We also thought this was excellent, surprisingly so, I didn’t expect it to be. Binged watched it. 😃

Lalalatte · 17/11/2020 14:01

Brilliant series. Great final episode. Loved the last scene, it's like she is like the white queen moving along the chess board.

FazeleysRoyale · 17/11/2020 14:18

@Lalalatte
Yes brilliant last scene and I cried when she sat down opposite the janitor (Schaibel).

Everything was a visual treat too. My favourite setting for this was when she was standing in the Aztec Palace in Mexico and the light was coming through all the stained glass windows, onto the interesting decor, the colours were gorgeous, I watched that twice !

Anotherthink · 19/11/2020 22:49

Just finished it, brilliant! Always wondered why she never went to see mr shaibel again though. I assumed her home with Alma was in a different town but it wasn't.

I guess it's quite realistic though. In that we don't realise these things until it's too late.

CarryOnWalking · 19/11/2020 23:24

I finished watching this evening. All of it was great, but episodes 6 and 7 were outstanding! Such clever imagery throughout. Now I want to read the book and learn how to play chess.

MrsXx4 · 20/11/2020 00:05

Was a beautiful watch! Totally gripping and the actress was absolutely fantastic! I didn’t expect to enjoy it but ended up watching it in 2 evenings.

bevelino · 22/11/2020 20:16

I am on episode 5 and loving it. The lead actress is a friend of dds so am especially delighted that the series is a great success.

Is she British?

I agree that she was brilliant and her face is mesmerising.

AldiAisleofCrap · 23/11/2020 12:38

I really like it , but much preferred the first episode. The actress who play young Beth is a much better actress.

AldiAisleofCrap · 23/11/2020 12:38

*played.

ChocBeforeCock · 23/11/2020 12:42

I did enjoy it but I really don’t know why, if that makes sense! I was emotional in the last episode when she plays the game against Bergov in her head and looks at the ceiling. Never would have thought I would care who won a fictional chess match!

Spellbinding series. I wish she'd thanked Mr Shaibel but as you correctly point out life isn't as neat as that.
bruffin · 23/11/2020 12:58

Is she British?

I agree that she was brilliant and her face is mesmerising.

She is a mixture of Spanish /British Scottish/Argentinian was born in Florida moved to Argentina as a baby , then London when she was 8.

I really liked her in Emma as well, another stunningly beautiful film

BaconAndAvocado · 23/11/2020 18:53

Only watched episode 1 so far.

Is it a true story?

KiposWonderbeasts · 24/11/2020 15:03

I want to re-watch it just for the outfits!

It's a bit like Marvellous Mrs Maisel - I love it but was distracted by how incredible the clothes are.

bruffin · 24/11/2020 15:15

There is an Australian programme called Miss Fishers Murder Mysteries which has the amost beautiful 1920s clothes, they did a 1960s version as well Ms Fisher modern murder mysteries. I havent watched those yet.

Bananalanacake · 24/11/2020 15:44

I used to run a chess club at work. Yet another hobby I had to give up when I had DC. Sad

Loved it.
In my imagination she made the decision to defect. To stay in a country which gave chess the status and not go back to the country that expected her to play the President for laughs...
