Anyone else watched this?

I've binged it over the weekend and really enjoyed it!

Loved the 60s vibe as well.

I have a question too! Is Cleo working for the Russians? When she and Beth meet in Paris and get drunk in the hotel bar despite Beth reminding Cleo she has a big match the next day and can only have one drink. Anyone?

Glitterpearl · 04/11/2020 14:23

I loved this. I binged it in a couple of days which hasn't happened in a while. Totally transfixed.

I also thought there was a plot by the Russians to sabotage her, but wasn't sure. I haven't read the book so I would be interested to hear if that is made clearer in it.

gumball37 · 04/11/2020 14:51

I also really enjoyed it!

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 04/11/2020 19:27

I'm not sure re sabotage, I think Beth was just easily led astray.

I have another question!!

Was it explained why Beth's mum was turned away from her family? Beth said at one point her mum came from money but Beth's upbringing was impoverished so wondered what had happened? You'd think if the family had an issue with Beth's mum they would still care about Beth esp once her mum died. Also I wondered if any effort had been made to contact her biological father when her mum died?

Am possibly over thinking this!!

I've only seen the first episode, but it seemed to me that Beth's mother had mental health issues, and kept running away with Beth as a consequence, which naturally did not help her financial situation.

I dont remember any real backstory wrt her mum in the book and the Townes story was very much based on him beher first 'crush', he never came to moscow.

ie lots of dramatic licence but it doesnt matter, i think they really captured the essence of her story.

The following is Tevis' description of her playing at the high school pure imagery but i dont think it could have been done better.

^Her mind was luminous, and her soul sang to her in the sweet moves of chess. The classroom smelled of chalk dust and her shoes squeaked as she moved down the rows of players. The room was silent; she felt her own presence centred in it, small and solid and in command. Outside, birds sang, but she did not hear them. Inside, some of the students stared at her. Boys came in from the hallway and lined up along the back wall to watch the homely girl from the orphanage at the edge of town who moved from player to player with the determined energy of a Caesar in the field, a Pavlova under the lights. There were about a dozen people watching. Some smirked and yawned, but others could feel the energy in the room, the presence of something that had never, in the long history of this tired old schoolroom, been felt there before.

What she did was at bottom shockingly trivial, but the energy of her amazing mind crackled in the room for those who knew how to listen. Her chess moves blazed with it. By the end of an hour and a half, she had beaten them all without a single false or wasted move. ^

I just finished it and loved it.

Yes the guy is gay.

The bit I felt was left open was the CIA guy saying not to answer the phone, open the door and look for signs whilst playing chess. I thought something was going to happen there but no 🤔
The Russian opponent handed her the chess piece we though it might've had a note in it.

Did she end up just staying and living in Russia?

NorbertMeubles · 04/11/2020 21:23

Loved it

"In two years she could be playing Borgov for the World Championship. She had to qualify first by winning the candidates match, but she could win it. A neutral place would be chosen, and she would meet Borgov head to head, for a twenty-four game match. She would be twenty-one the. She did not want to think about it now. She closed her eyes and dozed in the back of the limousine."

LemonSea · 05/11/2020 09:10

Horehound I took the CIA ‘look for signs’ to mean the US government thought Borgov might want to defect. Locking her door etc I took as being to protect her from any dirty tricks.

ThePerfectRose · 05/11/2020 12:30

Absolutely amazing. The last episode where she went to the orphanage and saw all the pictures of her that the janitor kept made me cry.

I also automatically thought the worst, and thought there was going to be an abuse storyline.

And oh no... I can’t believe that I didn’t realise he was gay- I honestly saw it as a happy ending for them both at the end. Oh dear! How did I miss that one? Kind of wish I didn’t read Mumsnet now. Smile As could never see her with Benny or Harry (Not that she needed a man obviously!)

Is it based on any true story? I honestly want to start playing chess now! I think this is the best thing I’ve seen on Netflix for ages and I’m sure it will do wonders for making chess mainstream. Smile

NorbertMeubles · 05/11/2020 12:36

I asked my husband to teach me to play chess after watching it. I am absolutely shit at it.

Crakeandoryx · 05/11/2020 12:40

I loved it!

ThePerfectRose · 05/11/2020 16:32

Any chance Townes was bi? I think they had a genuine connection and they would have kissed if his boyfriend hadn’t walked in!

bruffin · 05/11/2020 18:41

Benny and Harry were played by 2 British child actors Benny was the little boy in Love Actually and Harry was Dudley in Harry Potter.

TerrifiedandWorried · 05/11/2020 18:51

Townes said something about being mesmerised by her or words to that effect

Horehound · 05/11/2020 19:38

Oh I recognised the love actually boy straight away.

And now you've said that about Dudley I see it!

JamminDoughnuts · 06/11/2020 07:07

I am enjoying this

JamminDoughnuts · 09/11/2020 07:53

Would the book be good to read After watching?

FrankieStein402 · 09/11/2020 14:51

very much so - Beth's character was a close match to the book but IMHO the book is even more evocative in many areas especially the way in which she manages her daemons.

colouringindoors · 10/11/2020 23:12

I've just found it, on ep4 in one evening.
Love it!

colouringindoors · 10/11/2020 23:18

Theres very few series that grab me after 30 minutes...... But this Totally did

colouringindoors · 10/11/2020 23:23

I really like the relationship between her and her adopted mum. Muddy. Atypical. Touching. Unhealthy.

Amyheadache · 11/11/2020 16:27

This show! I watched it. Then read the book and am now watching again with dh.
Obsessed with chess. The clothes, the music, the sets, the beautiful Wes Anderson-esque filming. Everything!

Has anyone else noticed the shots are symmetrical when she’s feeling good/powerful and asymmetrical when she’s spiralling?

Best thing on Netflix for a couple of years! ❤️

colouringindoors · 11/11/2020 23:00

No hadn't noticed but loved it so much I might re watch straight away. I think i smiled through the whole of the last episode Grin
