What did the mother say when told of her husband's affair ?
Did she shrug it off or was she upset ?
Isn't she the actress Saskia Reeves who played the wife in US recently ?

FairFridaythe13th · 30/10/2020 16:22

I think she knew - but didn’t bother herself with the details (don’t ask, don’t tell) and just was happy to bury her head in the sand as long as she got to do her choir rehearsals and didn’t have the neighbours twitching their curtains.

Slightlybrwnbanana · 30/10/2020 17:00

Yes, Ladyelouise, she is. I watched those series back to back and found it very confusing! She's a very different character in this one.

PoulePouletteEternellement · 30/10/2020 17:24

I must say I'm quite impatient for the next episode to drop into my inbox!

JamminDoughnuts · 01/11/2020 22:09

It is annoying

HelloDulling · 01/11/2020 22:35

It’s not very good. Will watch next week though!

Clawdy · 01/11/2020 22:37

Very complicated tonight. Interesting to see how the ends will be tied up next week.

JamminDoughnuts · 01/11/2020 22:49

The special advisor was against the law taking his dna, at least Hugh questioned him, and lily was also ott

Defenbaker · 01/11/2020 23:01

Some good acting from Hugh Laurie and others, but I'm confused as to the point of this series. None of the characters are very likeable - all very two faced and cunning, so I don't feel much sympathy for them. Is this series just a way of saying that most politicians and their cohorts have no values and are corrupt? I can't say I'm enjoying it, but there's nothing else decent on during that time slot so I may as well see it through to the end next week, to see if the final episode rewards the investment of time made.
(Hugh Laurie was also in The Night Manager... now that was a great series.)

stumbledin · 02/11/2020 14:38

I think the point is just to say that (tory) politicians are corrupt.

A lot of the Hugh Laurie's character back story has similatities to Boris Johnson's, certainly on a personal level.

Maybe it is about how business and politics dont mix.

But the press doesn't come out of it very well.

The problem is we have had many plays like this, but the system doesn't change, so not sure that plays like this make much difference or help change anything. Sad

Clawdy · 08/11/2020 22:08

That ending was reminding me of Love Actually - for a few minutes!

Jonad · 08/11/2020 22:39

The writer also did Collateral didn’t he? I feel like they don’t always quite hit the mark. I like bits but other parts are off or too Making A Point.

MoonJelly · 09/11/2020 01:01

I'm wondering if they're leaving ends open for series 2, especially given that the wife apparently still has a hold over Lawrence via the company.

I was constantly annoyed by the silliness of his own lawyer wanting to ferret around to catch him out. Surely it would have been just as easy, and more logical, to make it the newspaper's lawyer?

stumbledin · 09/11/2020 20:30

What an inadequate and rushed ending.

So many loose endings.

But at least his wife had got that hold over him.

CaptainMyCaptain · 09/11/2020 21:38

I ended up almost liking him. He did the right thing by his new daughter, not so much with the other daughters or his wife. Is the secretary he wanted to bring with him when he became PM going to be his new mistress?

Clawdy · 10/11/2020 08:14

I did wonder if he was only doing the right thing by his new daughter so he could be seen as the good guy, but hopefully not.

CaptainMyCaptain · 10/11/2020 08:23

When he was talking to her I thought he was finding more similarities between her and himself than with his other daughters. An eye for the main chance, hence the fraud etc. I got the impression he secretly admired her cheek and they bonded.

Jonad · 10/11/2020 10:16

I didn’t even click about the daughter, that’s right that the way they were talking it was as if it was his younger days, before he settled down but it was actually later on.

I thought the point was she realised his wife perjured herself, had a fit of conscience and decided to try to expose him.
Not quite enough conscience to do it openly and get herself disbarred, admittedly.
