The full series is available on iplayer.

I've watched the lot Grin

I think there could be a second series.

Egghead68 · 20/10/2020 08:01

Interesting that the PM says it “suits her purposes” to promote HL. What purposes are those, I wonder?

Italiangreyhound · 20/10/2020 08:11

BoreOfWhabylon me too! Maybe we need a thread for the cheaters who just couldn't wait! Cheating chronological time that is!!!

Egghead68 · 20/10/2020 08:24

Oh no - I didn’t realise they were on iPlayer. I don’t think I’m going to be getting much done this evening!

CaptainMyCaptain · 20/10/2020 08:25

Give him enough rope to hang himself and then get rid of him?

Give him the job of dealing with a problem she caused herself, he gets the blame and she gets rid of him?

JamieFrasersSwingingKilt · 20/10/2020 08:30

@stumbledin

I think Hugh Laurie is a hopeless actor, he is only ever himself. But in this role it is totally suitable.

Thought the plot line of how everybody who is supposed to just be a lackey somehow know each other and are conspiring together.

Always feel a bit cynical that the BBC will put on these plays challenging the political status quo, but dont as a news station ever do anything!

Also, and I think this must just be me, but got really concerned as it looked like Helen McCroy wasn't able to use her right arm or hand. Did I just imagine this or did anyone else notice? Got really concerned and a bit distracted in the scenes she was in. Loved the way she was made up and dressed like so many women in politics or reporting on politics. The little jackets! The pancake makeup!

What do you expect the BBC to do? It's 'allegedly' an impartial provider of news, information and entertainment. It's not a lobbyist.
Egghead68 · 20/10/2020 08:33

Possibly the latter but also maybe part of a wider issue (e.g. with private investment in the state machinery) somehow.

FairFriday · 20/10/2020 08:33

It’s not often that there’s a show where every single charades is just awful.

Egghead68 · 20/10/2020 08:39

HL seems to wipe things down a lot.

Egghead68 · 20/10/2020 09:22

And he was obsessed with the spot in his secretary’s blouse. Are we supposed to infer OCD tendencies? Is this significant?

CaptainMyCaptain · 20/10/2020 09:52

@Egghead68

HL seems to wipe things down a lot.
I hadn't noticed that, I might have to watch again. It seemed very dull at the beginning so I probably got distracted and missed things like that.
Egghead68 · 20/10/2020 13:50

Finished it. It was OK but somewhat unsatisfying.

stumbledin · 20/10/2020 14:32

JamieFrasersSwingingKilt - I think you have missed the point. The BBC also does investigative reporting. And as with the play the news will focus on the existing Government. We rely on the media to hold people in power to account. It isn't as it is now endless self opinionators endlessly spouting drivel.

Italiangreyhound - the comment about 12 year olds was because someone up thread had said the assistants (spads?) all looked about 12 any why would you trust them!

stumbledin · 20/10/2020 14:35

Apologies for spelling Helen McCrory's name wrong. (I missed out the second "r")

And yes her arm was in a sling at the time of filming.

SomeoneTellBorisHeHasDandruff · 20/10/2020 19:42

I’ve watched it all on iplayer too and think there could be a second series.
It wasn’t a wow for me, the first 2 episodes dragged but I found it got better in the last 2.

FairFridaythe13th · 20/10/2020 19:46

I’m at the point where her drowns his younger daughter and wife in the garden pond. Not really, but he should have. Awful people...

Chauffeur - awful.
PM and her side kick - awful
His sidekick - awful
Lawyer - both wet
Daughter - yeah right...
Prison staff - keystone cops

The only one who isn’t awful is the mum of the daughter but that’s only because she only had 2 lines... the mistress is ok I guess...

mizu · 20/10/2020 20:45

Just started episode 3 and really enjoying it Smile

Egghead68 · 20/10/2020 21:28

Yes it’s just about lots of awful people double crossing and manipulating each other mainly but there is the contrast of genuine liking and kindness in a couple of relationships.

Italiangreyhound · 20/10/2020 21:59

I really liked Hugh Laurie character, his mistress and Luke.

Egghead68 · 20/10/2020 22:26

I have to disagree! HL character cheats on his wife for years and many other things I can’t list in case of spoilers. I didn’t see much to like.

Italiangreyhound · 20/10/2020 22:57

Egghead but that's the thing! He isn't very nice but I like him!!!!

Egghead68 · 21/10/2020 12:06

Each to their own! His kindness to his new daughter is the one heartwarming thing I could see about him. Otherwise it’s just superficial charm covering a highly self-serving individual.

FairFridaythe13th · 21/10/2020 12:12

I think he sees the two daughters he has - with all their upbringing (2 parents, home, money, education...) and what self-centred little planks they have become, and sees the other daughter as someone who is intelligent, bright and no-ones fool.

Plus I got the impression that he saw her mum as someone equally his equal and an independent minded woman who didn’t worship him. His wife is ‘correct’ but Roses mum isn’t (‘wrong’ class, colour, money etc...) so he will stick with Drippy
McDripface.

ancientgran · 21/10/2020 12:20

I've watched it all, really liked it, though HL was great at times good at other times bad bit like most of us really. Think they have left it at a good point for another series.

Clawdy · 21/10/2020 12:50

Too many spoilers on here! There should be a separate spoiler thread, for those who watched the lot.
