I thought it was amazing. Brilliantly written. The only bit I can't stand is the music!

Redbirds · 19/10/2020 05:25

I really enjoyed it. It’s all interwoven and I’m looking forward to seeing how it evolves.

Egghead68 · 19/10/2020 06:32

The music sounds quite like the music in Homeland

ageingdisgracefully · 19/10/2020 07:23

I can't make up my mind...it's either ridiculously clichéd and simplistic or very complex and nuanced. I'm hoping it's going to be the latter.

Loving Laurie though.

CaptainMyCaptain · 19/10/2020 07:39

@TheSpottedZebra

Not sure where Margaret fits in. She was meeting with the (female) driver in the stairwell. I think they kissed, but maybe not. So the driver is informing on Laurence too, I guess.

The bit about where shall I pick you up from tomorrow morning was so pointed, so does she disapprove of his affair?

Thanks. I must have blinked and missed that bit, I knew she'd been talking to someone.
AvonCallingBarksdale · 19/10/2020 07:40

I liked it - cliched and OTT as it was with dodgy accents galore Grin

GrishainDisguise · 19/10/2020 08:53

I liked it. Especially Helen MCcrory and the dodgy spads.

Egghead68 · 19/10/2020 08:53

What’s the significance of Parallax who run the prison, do we think? Are they the company HL was doing dodgy deals in New York with to privatise the NHS?

And what’s the significance of HL’s man of the people upbringing in Croydon?

GrishainDisguise · 19/10/2020 09:00

Well, our "man of the people" never stopped whinging about having to use a taxi. So if nothing else, it is funny.

TheSpottedZebra · 19/10/2020 09:19

I thought it was ironic that, to portray our man of the people, we have an Old Etonian. And the actor playing the PM is also IRL married to.... another OE.

How very like our real politicians.

Italiangreyhound · 19/10/2020 09:34

Egghead68 "What’s the significance of Parallax who run the prison, do we think? Are they the company HL was doing dodgy deals in New York with to privatise the NHS?" I don't know, I think it may just be a private company running a prison.

"And what’s the significance of HL’s man of the people upbringing in Croydon?" I am not sure I think Croydon is just a kind of not exciting place so he must be a man of people to come from a basic upbringing.

Egghead68 · 19/10/2020 10:54

They went on about both those things quite a bit though so I wonder if they are important plot points.

As Minister for Justice one of his jobs is to sort out the privatisation of prisons, which we are told is not working, so doubtless there’ll be more dealings with Parallax to come.

I wonder if there is a link to one of the other characters via his Croydon roots maybe.

CaptainMyCaptain · 19/10/2020 11:15

Some people call Farage 'a man of the people' because he poses with a fag and a pint despite him being an ex public school boy who worked in the City. It doesn't take much.

Janevaljane · 19/10/2020 11:17

I enjoyed it!

CoolYourBeansMySon · 19/10/2020 11:55

I think I might have to rewatch it, I'd missed a lot of these points!
It was a bit dull but I think that is David Hare for you. I think it will pick up though, there was a lot of scene setting.

Iheartwhitetshirts · 19/10/2020 12:55

I enjoyed it I think. You had to concentrate hard as lots seemed to happen quite quickly.

Definitely something coming with Parallax.

Did anyone else think his daughter might be the prison officer and not the other inmate?

Egghead68 · 19/10/2020 14:24

Ooh good thought @Iheartwhiteshirts!

CaptainMyCaptain · 19/10/2020 15:28

It didn't start getting interesting until near the end. I'll definitely watch the rest of it.
stumbledin · 19/10/2020 16:14

I think Hugh Laurie is a hopeless actor, he is only ever himself. But in this role it is totally suitable.

Thought the plot line of how everybody who is supposed to just be a lackey somehow know each other and are conspiring together.

Always feel a bit cynical that the BBC will put on these plays challenging the political status quo, but dont as a news station ever do anything!

Also, and I think this must just be me, but got really concerned as it looked like Helen McCroy wasn't able to use her right arm or hand. Did I just imagine this or did anyone else notice? Got really concerned and a bit distracted in the scenes she was in. Loved the way she was made up and dressed like so many women in politics or reporting on politics. The little jackets! The pancake makeup!

the80sweregreat · 19/10/2020 17:56

The young aide to minister was in Us ; I think his lovely but way too too young for me :(

TheSpottedZebra · 19/10/2020 18:05

it looked like Helen McCroy wasn't able to use her right arm or hand... yes I noticed that! I did see her (the actress) pictured in a sling, so must have had a RL injury rather than it being a plot point.

Italiangreyhound · 19/10/2020 22:50

Yes the arm thing.

stumbledin · 19/10/2020 23:53

Hope no one thought I was being flippant about Helen McCroy, it did made me very concerned Blush.

If it is some injury or something, hope it gets better soon, and it didn't stop her from being part of this.

And back on the series itself ... I didn't realise it was David Hare so I am feeling less convinced it will carry through convincingly.

Whatever the link to Parrallex it was used to plant the drugs so as to ... ? But the woman who said she was representing the daughter in a compromising position or ... ?

And would a Minister rely on a 12 year old to supply info etc.. I think that was about this wierd idea that a lot of people have that because it appears so many young people are tach savvy you just let them get on with it. Never thinking the 12 year many have zilch idea about how society works. Look at the Ballet dancer (Fatima) ad and how badly that went down.

Apparently there's a lot of criticism of it being too left wing, which I think is silly. On the few occasions Labour were in power there were plays about bad behaviour and decisions. But as the reality is that we have a Tory government then the issue that will be used to create a story are bound to be on existing tory policies and so on.

Italiangreyhound · 20/10/2020 00:32

I didn't think the arm thing was flippant. I re-watched and it is very obvious when you know!

Who is the 12 year old?

I think it is very interesting.

Does anyone else think he is both corrupt and moral? Plasusable? Likeable?

I find his toady senior advisor awful.
