David Hare hasn’t ever written second series before though afaik.

FairFridaythe13th · 21/10/2020 13:11

Maybe we should have 'spoiler alert' in the title? How do we do that?

Egghead68 · 21/10/2020 20:35

Maybe ask mn to edit it?

Egghead68 · 21/10/2020 20:36

But some people might want this to stay spoiler-free. Maybe it’s safer to have a second thread.

Italiangreyhound · 21/10/2020 21:13

Anyone want to talk who has seen all 4 episodes.

Watched the first episode last night, won't be watching any others, I wouldn't think. Full of cliches, at least 4 "big pronouncements/ questions" raised that were totally lacking in causality. Can't even remember them all, but one was about the "and you don't remember the colour of the women you slept with" or something like that. Totally irrelevant whichever way you look at it but brough as if it's the big turn-key moment of the scene/episode.

Poor scripting full of holes. I don't mind holes that are later filled in but hate ones that are just pointless plot-devices, used because you have no way to make it interesting by language alone.

borntobequiet · 24/10/2020 16:19

I watched the first 20 min and thought the Hugh Laurie character way too old for the role so whole thing totally unconvincing, also boring.

I was bored at first but it started getting interesting 5 minutes before the end so I'll give it another go.

I was watching the second episode, I had recorded it and for some reason it stopped after 45 minutes Sad
What did I miss in the last 15 minutes please?
It was just when the daughter who had been filmed snorting cocaine, arrived back home and was speaking with her Mum in the kitchen.

Chamian was knocked over in the street, I think. I can't remember much else. I found it hard to focus.

Not sure I'll persist with it. I

ageingdisgracefully · 27/10/2020 07:23

Do we know who the other daughter is yet?

JamminDoughnuts · 27/10/2020 07:41

it is on iplayer
seen 2 episodes
not sure where the live tv is at?

JamminDoughnuts · 27/10/2020 07:41

we assume who the other daughter is, because she is clever innit

ageingdisgracefully · 27/10/2020 08:05

Ah right. Confused

CaptainMyCaptain · 27/10/2020 08:30

I think she was followed and attacked. It was obvious that would happen when she walked down those dark alley ways.

LadyEloise · 27/10/2020 10:41

Did the daughter tell the mother about the father and his mistress ?

FairFridaythe13th · 27/10/2020 10:50

Yes - the (bigger) pain in the backside one.

The journalist was knocked over when she was running away from a couple of men following her and yelling at her to stop. Assasins or creepy guys - we arent really sure. She was drunk as a skink (he snuck booze into her drink) so she was a bit wobbly.

Janegrey333 · 27/10/2020 10:59

@stumbledin

I think Hugh Laurie is a hopeless actor, he is only ever himself. But in this role it is totally suitable.

Thought the plot line of how everybody who is supposed to just be a lackey somehow know each other and are conspiring together.

Always feel a bit cynical that the BBC will put on these plays challenging the political status quo, but dont as a news station ever do anything!

Also, and I think this must just be me, but got really concerned as it looked like Helen McCroy wasn't able to use her right arm or hand. Did I just imagine this or did anyone else notice? Got really concerned and a bit distracted in the scenes she was in. Loved the way she was made up and dressed like so many women in politics or reporting on politics. The little jackets! The pancake makeup!

I think Hugh Laurie is a hopeless actor, he is only ever himself.

He was top notch as House so that doesn’t make sense to me. Not only that but he was very sexy as House. In all other roles I’ve seen - erm...not so much. Then he IS just Hugh Laurie!

Slightlybrwnbanana · 27/10/2020 11:02

I loved it, and I think HL is great - he has played some very different characters in his career and I don't think the criticism of him "playing himself" is just.
I hope they make another series, given how it ends.

LadyEloise · 27/10/2020 14:39

In the second episode in the last 15 minutes did the daughter tell the mother about the ongoing affair his father was conducting. If so,what was her reaction ?

I can't watch the BBCplayer in Ireland so am unable to see what my tv failed to record.

FairFridaythe13th · 27/10/2020 14:46

Oh - I think the mum knew and could pretend it wasn't happening/ignore it as long as she didn't 'see' it and could get on with her life (and the neighbours didn't know). I think she believed that they were 'meant' to be together and would always be so - I suspect this is what he felt/told her. Hadn't they been together since uni?

CaptainMyCaptain · 27/10/2020 16:28

The mother seemed very detached, deliberately so.

HelloDulling · 27/10/2020 22:06

Just watched ep 2. All the women have great hair, and I love the mistress’s apartment, especially the kitchen.

PoulePouletteEternellement · 27/10/2020 23:02

After two episodes I still can't quite tell if I like it or not. The acting is almost all odd - so I guess down to the directing. Incredibly stilted. And too much laboured lingering of the camera on peoples' faces to imply nefarious purpose; a bit '20th century TV drama'. Not much wit or humour either.

Dunno. I've been watching a lot of full throttle, HBO series lately, this seems disappointingly twee, English, dated by comparison. And yet ... just enticing enough to justify a season pass. Halloween Confused
