Anyone else getting excited? The Diana trailer looks great. It's on Netflix on 15th November.

The Australian tour made me near to tears (not a royalist)

They would have made such a great team if they had worked together.

William and Kate seem to have got the balance right.

Hopefully guided by the RF

@Strawberrypancakes

Do you think William and Kate’s children will go to boarding school?
Probably, but not till secondary. Kate went to boarding school and apparently really liked it. So don’t think she will be against it.

I remember reading an article not long ago, that said they were struggling to make a decision as to whether George should go to boarding school or not. I think it was something to do with them being aware of George being shy and more sensitive compared to the other children.

If the series goes up to the early 00s we should see a little bit of Kate, shouldn’t we?

CaptainMyCaptain · 17/11/2020 19:45

There was an issue, I remember, about her being too middle class (as opposed to upper) and saying toilet instead of lavatory, for instance. They split up for a while but got back together.

I think boarding school is seen as perfectly normal and 'character building' in thse circles. Did you see the episodes with Prince Phillip and Price Charles at Gordonstoun? They looked horrific. Apparently Charles described it as "Colditz with kilts" and to be fair Eton is not exactly slumming it.

diddl · 17/11/2020 19:54

Accrding to Wiki, William & Harry boarded from age 8.

George will be 8 next year!

diddl · 17/11/2020 19:56

Charles & Diana were the P&P of Wales&-probably more was expected of them & boarding might have been done because of that also.

diddl · 17/11/2020 19:58

Episode 2 is sickly sweet schmaltz, isn't it?

Supersimkin2 · 17/11/2020 20:12

APB shagged everything that moved, including Princess Anne and Jilly Cooper.

That generation grew up in the 60s and 70s, and the posh have always had the time and money for a bit of bohemianism as well as a tradition of affairs. They all live in Glos or Wilts, too, so within easy cruising distance.

Unfortunately, Camilla didn't realise when she got married that her husband was a serial shagger, and went back to PC pretty fast. I don't think there was ever a suggestion that she and APB would 'make their marriage work' cos according to them, it did - as an open marriage. Wide open.

CaptainMyCaptain · 17/11/2020 20:23

I think the regime Charles and Philip endured at Gordonstoun would be regarded as child abuse nowadays.

RubyViolet · 17/11/2020 20:31

They boarded from age 8 !!!!! 😮 l had no idea. That’s shocked me.

Diana boarded from age 9!

I think if it's a family thing then it's probably easier to prepare your kids?

At least W&H went to Ludgrove & Eton so not quite such a trek for visits as Gordonstoun!

Hepzibar · 17/11/2020 21:12

OC is much better in this series, possibly we have warmed/accepted her now and the age has evened up.

I am same age as Diana and devoured everything about PC and his girlfriends at the time. Where was the 'Playboy Prince'? What about his Australian tour and the attention from women? Remember the woman on the Australian beach kissing him? He played Polo, he had a stream of girlfriends - the press were always reporting his every move. JO's posture is all wrong. PC was not, in public anyway anything like that, maybe in private he was?

The portrayal of Diana is good, her voice is astonishingly accurate.

Overall I think they have the essence of the relationship right. BUT - I am only up to episode 4!

The woman praying QM is totally wrong. Not even warming to her.

And finally GA's MT is like a caricature, perfect.

HeyGirlHeyBoy · 17/11/2020 21:22

I have to say the occupation of Northern Ireland, Thatcher's determination to go to war for it (a country that wasn't hers!) is very hard to understand in modern times. The IRA commited utter atrocities and I remember my DM crying in the kitchen at the news when I was a child but as I get older I see the British army's actions, and they as an actual state sanctioned army, also and the thought of a royal presence.. Well it wasn't the wisest move.

diddl · 17/11/2020 21:35

I've only watched 2 so far but am enjoying GA so far & I agree that OC seems more suited this series.

IcedPurple · 17/11/2020 21:37

Unfortunately, Camilla didn't realise when she got married that her husband was a serial shagger, and went back to PC pretty fast.

I'm sure she did realise it, as he was shagging every posh gal with a pulse - incl some of her friends - right from the start of their relationship.

Also, she didn't go back to Charles for some time. They remained friends, but throughout the 70s he dated a string of women, looking for the next Princess of Wales. They don't seem to have resumed a physical relationship until after his engagement to Diana.

copperoliver · 17/11/2020 22:38

I'm looking forward to it. X

Cloudesley · 17/11/2020 22:49

Why did Diana ever think dancing on stage with Wayne Sleep was a good idea? Way to make someone else's birthday all about yourself!

On the other hand, the video for the wedding anniversary didn't actually happen thank goodness. I wonder why the makers of the Crown threw that in? Perhaps to illustrate how wide of the mark Diana actually was ?

Hopefully this generation are a bit more forward thinking about sending young children away to boarding school. I always hoped Edward & Sophie and Zara & Mike were more progressive than other members of the royal family!

GlummyMcGlummerson · 18/11/2020 00:09

I'm shocked at the comments about GA's portrayal, I thought she was absolutely superb and really captured Thatcher.

I'm disappointed they never did an episode on Princess Anne's wedding or attempted kidnapping - Erin Doherty would have been brilliant especially for the latter.

DeRigueurMortis · 18/11/2020 00:18

So I've just finished watching the latest series.

In all honesty I've been disappointed.

Unlike previous series there is less focus on the Crown in the context of political/socioeconomic events of the times.

So much was missed at the expense of playing out a rather simplistic narrative of "cold, petulant" Charles and a "maligned" Diana.

The references to the 80's hinged around the worst episode of the intruder in the bedroom and the relationship between Thatcher and HMQ (MT never left Balmoral early btw).

Even key RF events were missed like the attempted kidnap of Princess Anne.

The "story" around C&D really irritated me in the sense it felt like lazy writing and playing to the crowd.

The truth is that they were utterly incompatible as a couple and both behaved very poorly to each other as a result.

As I also understand it C&C did break off all contact with each other after he got engaged and then resumed a friendship again (that later did become an affair) years later and only after the marriage with D was under huge strain and she had started developing other "interests".

I read in the paper that C is angry because he thinks people will think that's what happened and tbh I've got sympathy with him.

Those of us old enough to remember these events can actually do a better job of treating it as drama, but my DS was asking me "did that happen like that?" and I'm sure some people will take it as truth.

Personally I can't help think Julia Carling might have some wry thoughts on this portrayal of events.
