So I've just finished watching the latest series.
In all honesty I've been disappointed.
Unlike previous series there is less focus on the Crown in the context of political/socioeconomic events of the times.
So much was missed at the expense of playing out a rather simplistic narrative of "cold, petulant" Charles and a "maligned" Diana.
The references to the 80's hinged around the worst episode of the intruder in the bedroom and the relationship between Thatcher and HMQ (MT never left Balmoral early btw).
Even key RF events were missed like the attempted kidnap of Princess Anne.
The "story" around C&D really irritated me in the sense it felt like lazy writing and playing to the crowd.
The truth is that they were utterly incompatible as a couple and both behaved very poorly to each other as a result.
As I also understand it C&C did break off all contact with each other after he got engaged and then resumed a friendship again (that later did become an affair) years later and only after the marriage with D was under huge strain and she had started developing other "interests".
I read in the paper that C is angry because he thinks people will think that's what happened and tbh I've got sympathy with him.
Those of us old enough to remember these events can actually do a better job of treating it as drama, but my DS was asking me "did that happen like that?" and I'm sure some people will take it as truth.
Personally I can't help think Julia Carling might have some wry thoughts on this portrayal of events.
