@Handsoffisback Regarding Ian Brady I believe he went on hunger strike for some reason. Obviously for him the intention was to ultimately commit suicide so starving himself was the only way. The authorities however managed to legally prevent this and he was tube fed against his wishes.
I think this may have provided some comfort to those who wanted to see him suffer and have the control over his own death removed?

anuffername · 19/09/2020 16:33

Don't know that I'll be able to stand all the smoking!

You do know that they aren't real cigarettes and even if they were, the smoke wouldn't come out of your TV?

He used to transcribe newspapers and books for the blind, until for some reason they stopped him. Apparently his "hunger strikes" weren't that sincere either.

He often commented he should have been hanged.

They were running the trenches for the high speed gas network across the Pennines in the 60s - so there's the chance bodies could have been buried there.

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 19/09/2020 16:54

@DGRossetti I don't know a great deal about him but didn't he also want his ashes scattered on Saddleworth Moor?
Which the Coroner was having none of.

It sounds vaguely familiar. He was a very sick individual.

I honestly don't think serial killers are capable of sincerity.

There was a thread on Mumsnet about not eating home made food that other people brought into the workplace because you never knew the co during it had been prepared in. I couldn’t understand how people were so fussy. Now this takes on a whole new meaning

HeIenaDove · 19/09/2020 19:31

Just giving a mention of Peter Tobin who was/is suspected of being Bible John. More families suffering who will never get closure.

Hearwego · 19/09/2020 19:36

Regarding Ian Brady, I personally felt that he went on hunger strike because he knew the legal system wouldn’t allow it. As far as I’m aware, British law doesn’t aid in the suicide of an individual, even to someone like Brady.
So I don’t think the legal system would have allowed Brady his way, making me think this was a control thing. After all, Brady had nothing to lose, so playing games with them legal system gave him something to focus on.
I person would have taken great pleasure in being Brady’s executioner.
Or would it have been better to announce his release in Manchester City city , and let the public loose on him?... I doubt he would have lasted an hour.

My bloody WiFi is playing up and I can't be bothered rebooting yet again, so only made it as far as episodes 1 & 2 so far. But what a baffling character Dennis Nilsen is.

He could be anybody, absolutely anybody, that any of us work with.

MsStillwell · 19/09/2020 21:20

I doubt he would have lasted an hour.

What does that even mean Hmm. I think the same when people say they would like half an hour in a cell with a given murderer or paedophile. Really? What do you actually imagine you would do?

Pobblebonk · 19/09/2020 21:49

@Handsoffisback

excelledyourself I know it would never be allowed but Brady is a good argument as to why in certain instances someone should be tortured to tell the truth. Poor Winnie suffered a lifetime of torture because of him, it was his final prolonged act of cruelty.
Nonsense. Torture would get them nowhere, he could just come up with different answers every time anyone tried. He'd probably have got them digging up the entire Yorkshire moors.

What an utterly revolting idea. What does making other people into murderers achieve?

I don’t believe in mob rule but in Brady’s case I’d have made an exception. Completely hypothetical anyway, seeing as it would never have happened. So no need to get upset, about an evil child killer who died naturally behind bars.

Pobblebonk · 20/09/2020 00:35

I'm not upset, but I am wondering about the mindset of anyone to whom it can even have occurred that encouraging mass lynching is acceptable.

Hearwego · 20/09/2020 00:46

I think I explained what I meant. Anyway I thought overall the three part drama was pretty well done.
I do wonder how DN was able to over power all these men though, and move the bodies around, on his own.

Leakinglikeacolander · 20/09/2020 09:14

Started watching this last night. Jason Watkins is excellent as ever, even getting Brian Master's pronounciation of 'r' spot on.
I don't think DT's accent is right though.

Hearwego · 20/09/2020 11:07

I think DN had quite a ‘soft’ Scottish accent, where as David Tennants was more like his own accent, him being a Scot himself.
Other than that his portrayal was very good.

derxa · 20/09/2020 12:08

DN's accent obviously became more anglified due to living in the SE.
DT was trying to do a NE Scottish accent but made it too strong. DT's own Scottish accent is nothing like the one in his portrayal of DN.
I listened to a youtube clip of Nilsen but I'm not posting it on here because it's horrible.

Hearwego · 20/09/2020 15:09

Yes they did an interview in prison with Nielsen in the early 90s, the Home Office wanted it banned from being broadcast.
