OP posts:
Hearwego · 17/09/2020 23:46

Just watched the documentary tonight. Unbelievable that after the plumber discovered flesh and called the police, the Police lifted the drain, saw the human flesh and then left it unguarded over night!
Nilsen was seen working on it, possibly getting rid of vital evidence that could have identified some of the men.
Why did they leave the crime scene unsupervised?!!

MadameBlobby · 17/09/2020 23:47

I cried at the end too. A 14 year old boy ffs. My boy is 14. Really just a child no matter how grown up they seem. Terrible:(

Wicked bastard

Hearwego · 18/09/2020 00:18

I believe the 14 year old boy was in a pub but tried to get away with being older. DN persuaded him to go home with him and then murdered him.
DN was a child killer too ,if he wasn’t evil enough.

MadameBlobby · 18/09/2020 00:20

And a paedophile as well given what he apparently did with the boy’s body

Horrendous.

Such a despicable beast

Unknown69 · 18/09/2020 00:20

@Bunnybigears

Place marking for the chat after tomorrow's episode. Also I seemed to have missed the but where the lawyer disappeared, did he just say he was going to represent himself?
Yes the lawyer he had kept telling him not to comment so he told them they was fired
@unique1986 I read 10 Rillington Place by Ludovic Kennedy back in the late 90s DH found it in a charity shop.
There's a tv show about that aswell it's good

Unknown69 · 18/09/2020 00:22

@Popcornismandatory

David Tennant is spookily like the real Dennis - what a fabulous actor he is. We switched straight over to the documentary on Channel 5.
I know and he actually looks kind of like him when you see the real footage of him being taken out of the court house
gummywitch · 18/09/2020 00:32

Hearwego Oops, yeah, meant David not Neil Tennant. Something to do with me being an 80s West End girl back in the day Wink Anyway, David's portrayal is superb. Cant think of any other actor who could carry him off so well.

HeIenaDove · 18/09/2020 02:51

@Unknown69 That was shown on the Drama channel recently.

There is also a film to accompany the book with Richard Attenborough as John Christie and John Hurt as Timothy Evans.

Hels20 · 18/09/2020 08:09

Rillington Place with Samantha Morton is excellent and v well done. Was on about 5 years ago too. I think it’s on BritBox and or Netflix.

Mrsjayy · 18/09/2020 08:34

MrsJayy oh I must sound so callous now. Obviously it was dreadful what he did and there is probably more we don't know about. I was only commenting on tv show.
Oh no I was talking about the documentary they showed on itv last night dont worry Smile

Hearwego · 18/09/2020 08:41

He was proven to be responsible for his actions but seriously, how’s could DN have been sane? Who could kill people , bury them under their floorboards and then get them out to sleep with?
Scary to even think that people like Dennis Nilsen even existed!

DidoAtTheLido · 18/09/2020 08:50

@Random789

I know we did smoke loads in the 80s but I found it funny and then annoying that basically every scene had a million sucks and puffs squeezed into it. Like the director had said "Without frilly bonnets, how can we make sure all the viewers know that this is The Past? I know --- FAGS!!"
The passing back and forth of the fags is a about the degree of involvement that everyone is sucked into. The detective offers a cigarette and is then obliged to take back the pack that DN has touched... the writer who says he won’t shake his hand, but does, when DN offers his.

Did you see the detectives eyes / hesitation/ revulsion when he took the pack back?

A metaphor perhaps.

Wasn’t it the drain people who left it overnight? They found it in the evening and then went back early the next morning, found most of the pieces gone and only then called the police.

Will watch the rest on catch up. Neil Tennant has him down to a tee
Yes, would have been quite a different vibe if, instead of confessing, NT had played DN sitting in the dock muttering What’ve I, what’ve I, what’ve I done to deserve this......Grin

KylieKangaroo · 18/09/2020 10:41

David Tennant is just excellent, the way he portrayed him was spot on.

BigRedBoat · 18/09/2020 11:20

I'm really surprised by people saying David Tennant plays every role the same! If you watched Des, Dr Who and Good Omens back to back I think it would be hard to say they are the same.

TheSmallClangerWhistlesAgain · 18/09/2020 13:52

I was chatting with my mum earlier and we both thought that someone would have noticed Nilsen being smelly. Living in a small flat surrounded by rotting (and cooking) body parts would make anyone smell rank, surely? There was no shower in that horrible bathroom and the place didn't look well ventilated. Maybe that's one of the reasons he chain-smoked?

Rotting flesh is a very distinctive smell as well. It's almost impossible to get used to and a lot of people will vomit if they smell it.

southeastdweller · 18/09/2020 14:09

I question if the other tenants in both buildings where the murders were committed suspected what was going on, whether that’s by seeing all these men coming back with DN or the smell of the burning flesh? This was over a five year period. Is the smell of a burning tyre really strong enough to diminish the smell of burning flesh?

Or Casanova. He's completely different in that!

Ha ha ha!
Indeed.

He did choose flats where the building wasn't fully occupied. He had exclusive use of the garden at the first one as well.

It wouldn't surprise me if someone did raise suspicions, only to be disregarded like the surviving victims.

Pebble21uk · 18/09/2020 19:41

I'd be very interested to know how he was percieved by his colleagues at the Job Centre.

Watching the documentary it was noticable that every interviewee was from after his arrest.

His colleagues must have seen him in a favourable light for them not to let police in without a warrant because they didn't believe it. Also taking the food in for them. Imagine knowing you'd eaten something he'd made in that kitchen. I wonder if that gave him some kind of buzz when they ate it? A control thing again.

RightOnTheEdge · 18/09/2020 21:11

🤣 🤣 🤣

DGRossetti · 18/09/2020 21:18

The Christie/Evans case is also a great example that when you do hang the wrong person, the real killer goes on and on. Doubtless protected by the fact that even if the police twigged they'd got the wrong man, they couldn't really make a big thing about it ....
