Anyone else looking forward to this? Starts tonight at 9pm.

Pity. I love that in the book.

onewhitewhisker · 23/09/2020 18:16

bercows the books are lovely. I read them all to my DS as bedtime stories and now age 12 he asks for them if he's in need of a bit of comfort. We reread them all over lockdown. They are very gentle and absolutely hilarious - funnier than the TV series though I am enjoying that too.

IntermittentParps · 23/09/2020 18:23

The books are SO funny. Really well observed, self-deprecating about James, quite dry. Not at all as straightforwardly cosy as suggested by the TV shows (both series).

AlternativePerspective · 23/09/2020 18:32

In the book he goes to live at the practice but doesn’t go anywhere, he just runs around with the other dogs and lives like a normal dog.

And they have extra eggs and sherry and brandy because Mrs Pumphrey sends it to booster tricky’s health. Grin.

I started to watch the first series on YouTube, but from series2 it’s licences to the bbc and so is blocked, so can’t watch any further...

IntermittentParps · 23/09/2020 18:35

And they have extra eggs and sherry and brandy because Mrs Pumphrey sends it to booster tricky’s health. Yes, I remember that Grin Doesn't she also send him with little coats, and day cushions and evening cushions and all sorts, that never get used?

That's what happened in the old series too.

Maireas · 23/09/2020 19:18

I was confused - I thought you were all talking about Siegfried!!! It's Tricky Woo! Grin

CaptainMyCaptain · 23/09/2020 19:24
Grin
purpleme12 · 23/09/2020 21:45

I'm just watching episode 2 now and the dog is the cutest dog ever! So jealous!

Ginger1982 · 24/09/2020 06:53

Does anyone know anything about the backstory involving Mrs Hall's son?

prettybird · 24/09/2020 08:40

I'm still enjoying it - watched it last night because of the overlap with GBBO on a Tuesday night.

Good escapism TV.

purpleme12 · 24/09/2020 13:42

Well I've watched 3 episodes so far. I'm really liking it. I'm surprised how many complaints there are on this thread

Ashdownstar · 24/09/2020 14:05

I'm thoroughly enjoying it, but I would not have been able to continue if the horse being pts story had ended differently. I'm feeling more confident now that it's going to be full of twists and turns and generally happy endings.
I read the books 40-odd years ago as a young teenager, and loved them. And watched the original series. This has taken a bit of getting used to but I think it's great. I like the characters being fleshed out a bit.
And Siegfried may be a total eccentric but I fell in love with him on the racecourse scene with Nigel Havers.
Having him be so easy on the eye is just a bonus!

I am totally in love with him lol!

I love how he is with Tristan in little moments like saying about how hard it can be for the sibling in the parental role and when he bought him the car and said that he knew Tristan had missed out on having their father buy him his first car. There's also definitely something being hinted at between him and Mrs Hall.

Ashdownstar · 24/09/2020 14:27

@Ginger1982 I agree totally!

AuntieJoyce · 24/09/2020 21:19

The fourth episode with tricki visiting has just made me laugh all the way through. I don’t really care how faithful it is to the books, it’s a pleasure to watch.

The particular scene with Tristan hiding his girlfriend at the beginning was hilarious

EasilyDeleted · 25/09/2020 23:30

Caught up with episode 4 tonight. Yes to the pack of practice dogs, in the books they all threw themselves at the front door every time the doorbell rang. Tricky Woo did steal the show.

One little thing jarred - in their roast dinner they had Yorkshire puddings on the plate with the rest of the roast dinner which is not the traditional Yorkshire way, it is eaten as a starter, I think this is mentioned in one of the books.

fitflopqueen · 25/09/2020 23:50

One of the nicest things on TV at the moment , a bit of escapism which is certainly needed now, I read the books and watched the original series as a child. Well done to channel 5.

purpleme12 · 26/09/2020 19:49

I've never heard of Yorkshire puddings being eaten as a starter before and I'm from Yorkshire!

I love the programme i put it on with my 6 year old and she really liked it too. Wasn't expecting her to like it as much as she did

It used to be traditional. My husband is from Sheffield and said he once went for Sunday dinner with a girlfriend's family (in the late 70s). They had Yorkshire pudding with gravy before the main course then had more with jam afterwards. It was supposed to fill you up so you didn't eat so much meat.
EasilyDeleted · 26/09/2020 21:07

My family (from Yorkshire) have always eaten them as a starter.

spiderlight · 26/09/2020 22:53

I settled down to start watching this on catch-up last night and the only versions Virgin Media has available are audio described. So annoyed that I didn't set it up to record when it started :(

icelolly99 · 26/09/2020 23:05

I'm watching this series with my son. We're really enjoying it. I'm old enough to have read the books and seen the 'original' series but I've done neither so I'm really enjoying this for what it is.

@ImAncient

Good so it’s not just me saying that wouldn’t happen. Rewriting of history to match today’s standards imo is wrong. Women, such as Mrs Hall, didn’t have that sort of role then so why pretend that they did.
I really disagree. The idea that women were always subservient, particularly in the 1950s after they'd played a vital role during the war, is completely incorrect. So far as hugging Tristan is concerned, it was clearly a semi-maternal hug.
purpleme12 · 27/09/2020 00:02

Are the books like the series?
