Anyone else looking forward to this? Starts tonight at 9pm.

Another enjoyable episode, I love Tricky 😁 my poor dog has to now put up with me gushing over him and calling him Tricky wicky woo woo - this is his face --> Hmm

I remember James taking Tricky home from the books, where was their lovely dog this episode? Maybe she didn't like Tricky 😬

That roast dinner looked amazing!!

JaneJeffer · 22/09/2020 22:34

I don't think Mrs. Hall would have been dining with them though.

Clawdy · 22/09/2020 22:43

She wouldn't, you are right. They act as if she was an aunt or a sister, not a housekeeper.

wizzler · 22/09/2020 23:31

Tricky Woo stole every scene he was in. He is perfect in the role.

GCAcademic · 22/09/2020 23:35

Standout performance from the actor playing Tricky Woo

His evident joy at snaffling the ham out of the hamper was priceless. Method acting at its finest.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 23/09/2020 00:10

Presumably they're giving him more of backstory because they're actually acknowledging he's older. They had that bit about the horses in WW1, when actually he wasn't born until after the war.

HappydaysArehere · 23/09/2020 00:33

Really enjoying this and recalling the stories in the books as they occur.

SistemaAddict · 23/09/2020 01:04

We are loving this show, even little ds. I vaguely remember the original series being on but nothing about it. Dd2 is animal mad and wants to be a vet so she loves this for the animals but is also finding the characters very amusing. She's laughed so much tonight at Tristan and Tricky Woo's antics. The horse incident was awful but is finding it fascinating. It's our bonding viewing and we really look forward to it. Mrs Hall makes me chuckle with her expressions and firm grip of Siegfried. He's funny and makes us laugh. I've never read the books-what age would you say they are suitable for? I might watch the original series sometime over the long winter lockdown that's probably coming our way.

Maireas · 23/09/2020 05:56

The books are very accessible, and suitable for older children. I think I was maybe 12 or 13 when I read them.

Ginger1982 · 23/09/2020 08:27

@Maireas

That's interesting, Ginger, because his widower status was never referred to in the original series.
I need to find where I saw this now! 😆

Yeah, I wondered if they're tying it in with Sam West's age (54) If so that would have made Siegfried roughly 31 at Ypres, or possibly younger if they're going with him being younger. What is the age difference meant to be between him and Tristan?

This was where I read about Siegfried being a widower.

Maireas · 23/09/2020 08:44

It's a sad story, only 24 when she died. He did remarry. Alf Wight was 23 when he went to work for Sinclair, who I think was about 6 years older. All three men were quite close in age, I think the casting of Robert Hardy made him an older character.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 23/09/2020 08:58

I wondered about the age difference between the brothers, it must be about 20 years?!!

I would have said possibly more if Tristan is still at university. Going by the casting for this series I would have put Tristan at about 25 and Siegfried at closer to 50.
Oblomov20 · 23/09/2020 09:32

Just watched 4. Just not enjoying it very much, it's all too put on.

Maireas · 23/09/2020 17:05

I don't know why they cast Siegfried as old. All the men were in their twenties.

CaptainMyCaptain · 23/09/2020 17:42

I was hoping to see Tricky Woo running about in the mud like the old series, I don't know if that was even in the book though.

IntermittentParps · 23/09/2020 17:46

I think it was – I seem to remember a description of him launching himself at Mrs Pumphrey all muddy and she sort of gamely puts up with it. You mean after he gets fat and unwell and James takes him to live at the practice, yes?

woodhill · 23/09/2020 17:48

Wasn't Siegfried in the Great War though?

IntermittentParps · 23/09/2020 17:52

In the books no, not if he was only a few years older than James – say late 20s in 1937.

CaptainMyCaptain · 23/09/2020 17:52

You mean after he gets fat and unwell and James takes him to live at the practice, yes? They took him to the practice but Tristam took him on a few walks (to the pub) and that was it.

IntermittentParps · 23/09/2020 17:53

What, in the series? In the book he goes to live with them for a bit and has the time of his life (and loses shedloads of weight) running about with the gang of practice dogs.

Carpathian2 · 23/09/2020 17:58

I'm loving this series, I loved the '80's version and I think this is a good interpretation. I hope there's another series.

Yes, that's how I remember it too but that's not what happened in yesterday's episode.
