I saw this last year. Very thought prevocking And cleverly done

Comedy drama that shines a light on the day-to-day life of a family looking after their severely learning disabled nine-year-old girl, Rosie.

It flicks from 2007 and born and 2017 life 10yrs later and parents getting answers

Worth seeing s1 if haven’t seen it but can watch and follow if haven’t

It’s set over 8/10yrs. Rosie as a baby /toddler. Rosie now

As usual I thought a brilliant episode ans so true to life

Esp the gift shop and running throwing toys etx

Tho maybe they should say she has special needs to the people in the shop

As they prob think she’s being a little sod

The nursery teacher seemed very condescending

But again sadly normal when they can’t cope with a child’s behaviour

It wasn't a Nursery class at a school, they wouldn't have been able to do that.

Brilliant brilliant brilliant! I said this last series... it's like they had cameras in our house!

Blondeshavemorefun · 31/07/2020 22:22

Yes was a nursery for working mums so 730/630 Kind

Guess that’s why she gave up work And then did the 24/7 care as hubby is useless

Found you. I knew there'd be a thread about this somewhere. I found it (the second series) by accident last week and have watched them all. Brilliant. Only I don't know how I missed the first series ? Hadn't seen or heard of it at all, and not on iPlayer to watch through first.

Blondeshavemorefun · 01/08/2020 12:52

Does seem weird cant find 1 Anywhere

The episode with the social worker was utterly brilliant. Just that tiny moment when Jessica Hynes went to hug her as she left - so perfect.

Breathmiller · 02/08/2020 16:40

We've just binge watched both series (series 1 was on I-player) .

My dc3 aged 16 has (relatively) mild SN and I found some of it rang true.
Especially the bit about me not being believed that something wasn't quite right with his development. I found that really hard at the time.
We also watched the 2nd series over the last couple of days and my younger son couldn't watch the bit about young Rosie having a seizure as he watched his big brother having a severe unprovoked seizure last year. He found it too upsetting.

But I think it is done really well. We liked the bits of dark humour but also how sensitively the subject was dealt with.
It was interesting to see the many different reactions of various family members. My mum did actually say "well, he didn't get that sort of thing from our side" Hmm

There is also another thread on here from the last series that was interesting. I don't know to link but I just advanced search it and read it. There's one in telly addicts (and one in SN chat I believe but i didn't read that one yet)

Nearlyoldenoughtowearpurple · 02/08/2020 16:51

Another wondering how they filmed that harrowing seizure scene.
Such a good programme
I remember reading an article when it first came out, apparently the real life mother made the father rewrite the script as he had painted himself in far too favourable a light !

Totally agree, loved that bit.
Breathmiller · 02/08/2020 17:54

Yes!! That moment of wanting to hug the social worker. Brilliant!!

And the fact this chaotic, very young social worker turned up and I thought...oh here we go...bit of a cliche. And she was amazing . Friendly and human and basically saying..."I see you are doing a great job. It can't be easy sometimes. How can I help?"

A slightly different situation, but I had my oldest daughter when I was very young. When the health visitor visited my home I was all set to prove how I wasn't a useless mother, "did she want to see the bedroom?" Basically was she here to check up on me.
It was very similar. She was lovely and we just clicked. I was so nervous that she was coming to check my decor and me and my parenting and ..and ..and... on and on the potential thoughts went.

I suppose I was worried I would be found lacking compared to older mothers.
She was great, we had great conversations about parenting and I definitely felt like she was there to ask how she could support me (if i
felt I needed it) rather than judge me. I remember thinking I could have hugged her as she left.

That little moment in that scene made me smile.

DominaShantotto · 02/08/2020 18:15

I've not seen S2 yet but the parts in S1 where she knew there was something not quite within developmental norms with Rosie and was just being fobbed off by professionals assuming she was an over-stressy new mum was so accurately done it reduced me to tears at a few points.

EggysMom · 02/08/2020 18:21

Shame that not all social workers are as nice as shown in that episode ...

I laughed out loud at the scene in the pub. That's like taking our son to the pub, no matter where we seat him (pinned between us), he will eventually cause havoc and we have to leave. And I rarely take him into shops, he's been known to clear an entire supermarket shelf just by sweeping along it with one arm.

UncleShady · 02/08/2020 18:21

S1 is on iPlayer now.

I watched the first two episodes with some of my DC - it was very interesting to see their reactions to the new parents pain. As ASD teenagers they thought baby Rosie should be adopted... I did have to ask whether they thought I should have had them adopted given they didn't turn out as expected either Grin Obviously they can't remember that it was like that for me when they were little.

Breathmiller · 02/08/2020 18:31

eggsy I'm sorry you have come across difficulties with social workers. Yes, important to say that its not always as it was portrayed in that scene. I know a few people who also have had a difficult time with SW.

The thing is, things like clearing the shelves or pouring milk over our heads or the floor.... I can see the sensory pleasure in taking my arm and just clearing the shelf. Feels like it would be one of these satisfying jobs! Grin
If I didn't have that social barrier to doing it then why not? You have a thought that this or that would give a sensory pleasure so you do it!

diddl · 02/08/2020 20:12

It's quite well done, isn't it? I feel so sorry for the son at times.

The one when Rosie threw the picture just after the (I agree pretty useless) dad had asked Ben to look & he didn't.

Neither did the dad & the dad blamed the son!

The one with the social worker.

I thought that the bruises on Rosie's arms might have been from the way the parents were dragging/handling her.

Blondeshavemorefun · 02/08/2020 21:38

Nice to have a sw shown in good light

Tho agree not all all. Tho many are

I’ve seen this one already and all I can say is - this is my life!

Blondeshavemorefun · 06/08/2020 22:28

I thoight that was a brilliant last episode

I actually had tears in my eyes when Ben said he don't want Rosie to be there And she ruins it all

I think this programme is so sensitivity done. And gives you a real insight to those parents who have sn children and their days just roll into one

Sad this was only five episodes ,but I really enjoyed ,I hope there's a third series ,I did laugh when they were travelling to there holiday and Rosie opened the car door ,my son has done this ,I always sit in the back with him now and we have the child lock on! And when she grabbed the steering wheel again I can imagine my son doing this he's tried to climb in the back ( estate car) when we have been on the motorway for something he wants ,I loved the series and I think it's so well done .

SingToTheSky · 08/08/2020 21:20

Just finished this today, I watched s1 when it first came out and either I’d forgotten how much I loved it, or this series was even better. A few moments made me tearful.

I have always loved Jessica as a comedy actress (Spaced etc) but she blew my mind in this series, so relatable and real. Brilliant.

x2boys · 08/08/2020 21:20

And yes I felt sorry for Ben ,My own " Ben " is around the same age and he's brilliant with his brother just as Ben is but it's very hard siblings sometimes ,I think if it had been us one of us would have stayed on holiday and the other would have taken DS2 home ,

SingToTheSky · 08/08/2020 21:21

Wendell Gee was one of my favourite old REM songs so that scene near the end did me in. 😭
