Ya Ya Ding Dong! One of the funniest, most feel good films I've seen; it's about two Icelandic musicians and their childhood dream of winning the Eurovision Song Contest.
Brilliant!

I got Will tbh, I’ve always dreamed of hosting Eurovision and as I have dual nationality I was always planning two potential opportunities as a child. (Both have won in my adult lifetime).

We loved it (14, 12 and 9 plus DH). DS14 noticed the piano cameo before any of us.

I liked that it wasn’t a total pisstake but just pokes gentle fun but also captured the madness of it all.

LutherRalph1 · 05/07/2020 08:16

Thought it was meh but easy watching. Watched as I bloody love Iceland but think I laughed once

StartupRepair · 05/07/2020 08:22

I thought it was faithful to the insane spirit of Eurovision but could have been a bit shorter and funnier. Also noticed the complete lack of Scottish people.

@ArsenicNLace

OMG!! I must have been watching a totally different film to everyone else! Just finished watching! I thought it was dire.

Enjoyed the music but the comedy was non existent! Admittedly not a Will Ferrell fan. Hated 'Elf' and find Ferrell himself really creepy.

Clearly I'm in the minority.

Same. It was over-long too.

Still, if you need cheering up, this was Iceland’s actual entry this year and, as someone said on Twitter back in March, it’s a banging tune: m.youtube.com/watch?v=VFZNvj-HfBU Tip: Wait out the recorder intro on the MV. Wink

Another one who loved it! I suspect it is one of those films the critics will pan but the public, especially the Eurovision fans, will adore. And let's face it if you hate Eurovision you are unlikely to watch the film.

Yes but the contest was being held in Edinburgh, which would mean the UK had won it the year before!!

We had this discussion too. I may be wrong but I don't think they say anywhere that it is in Edinburgh. Obviously we recognize the city and so all think "Right, Edinburgh" but I wonder whether it is just meant to be generic European city rather than Edinburgh specifically.

Either that or we are meant to assume Australia won the previous year and asked Edinburgh to host.

DioneTheDiabolist · 06/07/2020 18:50

I loved it. Total Eurovision!Glitterball

I found it thought provoking.🤔 Like do you think it's just a coincidence that Iceland could have won it this year, but for CV19? I know it's expensive to host, but seriously, the elves may have gone too far. This time.😱

Omg I thought this film was terrible. It didn't even fall into the category of So Bad it was Good!

DCs walked out, me and DH stayed till the bitter end. Very very poor.

I normally love Will Ferrell too.

homemadecommunistrussia · 08/07/2020 12:10

The best bit was when the elf slammed the door.Grin

WankmasterBastardDeLaShithead · 11/07/2020 11:43

I absolutely LOVED this film! Only watched cos the kids wanted to see it, and expected it to be a spoof of an already absurd spectacle... But it was actually more like a very affectionate defense of Eurovision. It actually make me want to see the next Eurovision!

The tone was just so sweet and uncynical. Lemtov's face at 1:59 here says it all:

Actually his character made the movie for me: somehow simultaneously funny and genuinely touching.

Gingernaut · 18/07/2020 09:38

I swear to God. This is on the current BBC Radio 2 playlist.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 18/07/2020 09:42

5foot5 we watched it again Ystd and it definitely says welcome to Edinburgh when they arrive at the airport.

crumpet · 18/07/2020 09:52

I did also enjoy seeing Americans on Twitter who’d never heard of Eurovision going “er, what the hell is this”?

Needcoffeecoffeecoffee · 19/07/2020 15:02

Watched it last night too. Lars is definitely stood outside a huge big Edinburgh airport sign!
I liked it and loved the cameos, sigrit and the Russian.
I though will Ferrell was far too old and not a good fit for the role. I know he wrote it but he needed to step back and let someone else younger play the role. Someone who could show a more genuine naivety. I didn't buy he had lived in a little Icelandic town all his life or that he was only a few yes older than rachel McAdams but pierce Brosnans son.
Also I agree why say UK wouldn't get any points when hosted in Edinburgh and he hosts weren't Scottish

JunoJigglewick · 21/07/2020 00:04

Loved it. LOVED IT.

I read reviews before watching it and was primed for badness. So happy it was a lovely affectionate sing along Eurovision fest.

One review referred to Pierce Brosnan's excellent Cork accent Grin

The fairies were my favourite

JunoJigglewick · 21/07/2020 00:06

Dammit Elves not fairies Confused

mawbroon · 21/07/2020 00:45

It came up on screen saying Edinburgh. Definitely not meant to be a generic city.

It was apparently inspired by Edinburgh hosting Eurovision in 1972 . Monaco had won the year before but were unable to host.
