Ya Ya Ding Dong! One of the funniest, most feel good films I've seen; it's about two Icelandic musicians and their childhood dream of winning the Eurovision Song Contest.
Brilliant!

@Cacacoisfarraige

Was Dan Stevens singing or miming ? I know he can sing but wasn’t expecting such an operatic voice !

While is was a pisstake, it was done so kindly that I really liked it. It would be so easy for an American (not brought up on a diet of Eurovision) to have just trashed it.

They even made the Russian likeable 😂

He was singing. Rachel was the only one to be dubbed. Will has been a huge Eurovision fan (including attending the events) since he met his Swedish wife.

It was done with so much affection. It was produced with the EBU and Jon Ola Sand was an exec producer so I think that helped to keep it affectionate
Hoppinggreen · 30/06/2020 13:53

Really funny but Lars was a bit of a dick and Will Ferrel was far too old for the role

StealthMama · 30/06/2020 14:14

So much fun, was just what I needed in Sunday night :) really nicely done.

Lunaballoon · 30/06/2020 19:15

The BBC gave it a “deux points“ review but we loved it! It’s totally in the spirit of Eurovision✨

AnneOfQueenSables · 30/06/2020 20:18

Dan Stevens was fab! Will Ferrell's age grated on me. He is obviously so much older than Rachel. I spent half the movie trying to work out who the banker was before realising it was the hot dad from Sex Education.

BinkyBoinky · 30/06/2020 20:38

Lars was a bit of a dick

Totally. I really loved Rachel's character, she truly had the guts to go sit by herself in the artists room, she had the real talent in singing and songwriting, and the Russian guy helped her see that. I like that he turned out to be quite nice really. Lars just wanted adoration but without any talent or guts whatsoever!

Autumnchill · 30/06/2020 20:52

Loved it! Anyone else think the Russian sounded and acted a lot like the composer in The Money Pit 😁

I thought it was a lot funnier than I expected. A tad overlong it could have been edited down a bit.
Agree Will Ferrel was too old really I noticed how much make-up he wearing to look more youthful!
Also Pierce Brosnan cannot do an accent to save his life, it was wobbling all over the place! 😊

Sidge · 02/07/2020 16:03

I watched it on Tuesday and thought it was hilarious.

Cheered me right up.

The Russian!

The elves!

The songs!

Brilliant.

@FelicityPike I read that Dan Stevens didn’t sing his own numbers, it was a Swedish chap. He was supposed to but didn’t in the end. I thought he was fabulous though. 😁

I now have the soundtrack downloaded and Double Trouble is my new favourite cheesy dance tune 🤣

Parrish · 02/07/2020 16:10

Best couple of hours that I’ve spent in 2020 so far!

StopTheWorldImGettingOffNow · 02/07/2020 16:14

Dan Stevens and Rachel McAdams were both partially dubbed - they started the songs themselves and at times were mixed with the voices of other artists.

Don't mean to be pedantic but it's Ja Ja not Ya Ya Grin

I was a bit Hmm at there being one solitary Scottish person - an unseen bloke in a portaloo that gets pushed over! There's so much acting talent in Scotland they easily could have had some other Scottish actors playing the production crew etc.

There is a bit where Rachel McAdams is suggesting Dan Stevens may be gay and she lists certain other possibilities including 'gender-fluid'. Had I been backstage at the pretend Eurovision over hearing that conversation I would have pointed out that gender-fluid is about identity not sexuality... Blush

Those are my very minor gripes. Apart from that it was perfection. The soundtrack is on Spotify and has been played non-stop. The songs were mostly written by someone who actually writes loads of songs for Eurovision in real life.

PasstheBucket89 · 02/07/2020 16:15

Yeah its a 15 isnt it? mine are 10 and 7 so im thinking not quite yet

SockYarn · 02/07/2020 16:40

12, I thought?

It's fairly tame. No violence. No sex. Wee bit of bad language and a couple of willy jokes.

Hoppinggreen · 02/07/2020 16:48

My 11 year old thought it was funny and part from willy jokes there wasn’t anything inappropriate in it

Parkandride · 02/07/2020 16:50

Loved it! Huge Eurovision fan here
Reckon iceland will definitely win next year regardless of their act now

They would’ve won this year had it gone ahead. I think it’s rotten that it needs to be new songs next year.
SegregateMumBev · 02/07/2020 17:20

I'm a Eurovision nut and I really enjoyed it! I was at the semi-finals in Vienna, and the mood was captured really well.

Not a Will Ferrell fan, and it wasn't laugh out loud funny.

I didn't mind it being held in Edinburgh (maybe Australia won the previous year!), but the Icelandic names are wrong, surely.

The Songalong was genius.

Shit. I'll have to change my name Blush

LyndaLaHughes · 04/07/2020 07:46

@SockYarn

Can we just talk about Dan Stevens' hairdo, channelling George Michael in about 1984? Not a HAIR out of place. Amazing.
Dan Stevens said that is exactly what the hair was modelled on!
marcopront · 05/07/2020 07:36

@Twizbe

I've just watched it. I LOVE Eurovision so was very excited for this. Loved the song a long bit.

Did anyone else notice the deliberate (I assume) mistake?

There are actually 8 mistakes

Doesn't stop it being a great film
