I thought I might as well start it. As then I won't have to go searching for the new thread.

Hardly fitting to a female body if we do.

It doesn't have to be fitting to a female body though. It just has to be made to measure.

Cocolapew · 17/06/2020 22:41

Boo I wanted Liz to stay.
I've downloaded the Sewing Bee playlist on Spotify I love a bit of Doris Day.

Didkdt · 17/06/2020 22:50

I loved the theme of movie week and the flapper dresses
I think Liz really proved herself in the M2M so I'm disappointed she left and Matt stayed
I really like Claire's style and she is a talented garment maker but I think Nicole is very good as well. If Matt wins I'll eat my pin cushion

Binglebong · 17/06/2020 22:56

Female bodies are harder - that's why designers prefer the boyish figure for their models. Even more so as most of us are uneven - if you pad yourself (in any way!) it is easier to then fit the clothes as you're symmetrical. A natural female body is harder to make to measure than a male one, with or without additions. It should be an equal board with three females or three males (or one model who does quick changes - that could be interesting).

That said doing a three piece man's suit for a final piece would be amazing!

Binglebong · 17/06/2020 22:57

Sorry, that should have said easier to fit and usually hang better.

Haggisfish · 17/06/2020 23:09

I think matts chap will be modelling next week but not a dress. I like both Nicole and Claire. Looking forward to next week.

Egghead68 · 17/06/2020 23:12

I think from the way it’s been edited that Matt’s going to win.

WobblyPenumbra · 17/06/2020 23:20

According to RT the final round next week is “a glamorous red carpet dress”. I don’t have a problem with that being worn by Matt’s chap tbh, it’s still a dress, and it still has to be fitted to his body (with or without padding) in a flattering way.

I’m looking forward to learning more about Nicole’s private life - I don’t feel I really know her like I do the others. But my heart belongs to Clare. Her ability to conjure up retro Enid Blyton expletives under pressure shows a phenomenal commitment to her personal brand, she has a very serious day job, and she’s a massive nerd.

ButteryPuffin · 18/06/2020 00:54

Coming in late as have sometimes been not watching on the night. Love Clare and admire Nicole. Clare is my fave but I could cope with either winning. I think Matt got away with things because they want the optics of a man in the final.

@Poshjock you might enjoy Blown Away on Netflix! Fantastic intricate glass making challenges. I'm really enjoying it.

Starksforthewin · 18/06/2020 03:03

I agree with everyone above, no way were they going to allow three women to be in the final.
I expect the brief has been written so Matt can showcase his drag friends and the BBC can tick another few boxes on their forms whilst screwing over women.
I cannot abide drag.
Matt should have been sent home on many occasions and I think he has been protected to push forward a particular agenda.

Stellaris22 · 18/06/2020 08:04

I don't think it's being edited for Matt to win to push an agenda. You can choose to dislike drag but saying inclusivity is pushing an agenda is a bit far fetched.

I really liked Liz and do agree some of Matts patterns can be quite simple. I thought Nicole should have gone. She doesn't understand fabrics in the same way others do and always chooses the wrong and deliberately challenging fabric for a pattern.

SoupDragon · 18/06/2020 08:05

I disagree. Liz totally messed up 2 challenges and handed Matt a place in the final.

I actually think it's quite mean to say he's just box ticking.

SoupDragon · 18/06/2020 08:06

I've said before, often who wins is based more on who messes up rather than who is the best.

DiddlySquatty · 18/06/2020 08:11

No no no!
Just delurking to say how gutted I am about Liz going last night

I think they should give more weight to the final challenge and I was but surprised that Nicole wasn’t a contender to leave also. She also made a major error on the pattern challenge, her 2nd task was also not great and final challenge much worse than Liz’s!

WobblyPenumbra · 18/06/2020 08:20

Liz has done some good work, but in the pattern challenge, where technical ability really stands out, she’s not done well as I recall. Matt has won GOTW twice, Nicole 3 times, Clare once and Liz never according to Wikipedia.

I think that Clare and Matt’s huge amount of practice at sewing garments for practical use and adjusting them to their particular requirements has seen them through to the final. Again I don’t feel I know enough about Nicole’s sewing background apart from “likes shiny things”.

WobblyPenumbra · 18/06/2020 08:23

Nicole’s pattern challenge produced a wearable dress though Diddly, and Liz’s didn’t. I hated her transformation, but the judges loved it - maybe it was better in the flesh.

Roussette · 18/06/2020 08:33

I think it was always going to be a tricky decision as to who goes. I do think Matt is not as good as the other three and he only got through by the skin of his teeth.

Claire's flapper dress was not good so she was lucky to get through on her transformation challenge.

OneMoreLight · 18/06/2020 08:37

Liz was my favourite 😣 so sad to see her go. I'm probably the only one not a fan of Claire's style.

Egghead68 · 18/06/2020 08:54

I don’t like Clare’s style either although I think she is an excellent sewist (awful word) and loved her transformation challenge yesterday.

I am really surprised Clare and Nicole weren’t in contention for leaving last night. They both made major mistakes.

CaptainMyCaptain · 18/06/2020 09:06

sewist (awful word) but better than 'sewer' Wink.

I'm still hoping Clare wins, I love her style, although I I have grown to like Nicole more.

Studycast · 18/06/2020 09:19

Binglebong love the sewing advice from 1949! Shock

I sound like a broken record but I think the reason the outcome of last night's episode felt wrong to me is because I thought Therèse should have been in the final with Nicole and Clare. I know she had timing issues sometimes but her sewing was always of a high standard and imho overall, much better than Matt's. It annoys me that someone who sews lumpy seams having not bothered to remove sequins is allowed through!

LadyEloise · 18/06/2020 09:58

I agree @Studycast.
I don't think either Liz or Matt should be in the final.
I think Therese is a better at sewing.
I often watch with subtitles and read sewer as sewer linked with sewage.
"Now sewers... " Smile

Therese was the worst that week though. The choice this week was between lumpy seams and a disaster (Or disasters if you count Nicole as well) with the pattern challenge. They all messed up this week and Im not sure any of them deserve to be in the final based on this week alone 😂😂
SoupDragon · 18/06/2020 10:21

Sewer sounds better but looks awful, sewist looks better but sounds wrong. Not a great choice!

FreezerBird · 18/06/2020 10:54

Can someone explain to me why the uneven hems weren't an issue in the pattern challenge?

Patrick seemed to say it was because they weren't hemmed yet and the hem would 'drop' naturally which would be dealt with by hemming.

But does that mean the pieces they cut of the pre-pleated fabric actually weren't the right shape at the hem? Or that you would put the unhemmed dress on a mannequin, let the hem drop and then finish it? Which sounds like a process which takes time and therefore unsuitable for a timed challenge.

I think I've misunderstood completely somewhere.
