Discovered this pure gem late the other night and am addicted. It has some extremely subtle very funny moments but for me it's very interesting observing Haridi Jews getting on with their daily lives. As a jew but non observant myself there are lots of elements that I recognise from growing up however this is a group that are very far removed from.what I know. Wonderful characters and acting. Fwiw you don't have to be Jewish to enjoy it so dont be put off. Highly recommended Smile

Thanks, I'll give it a try!

NotTheOnlyPomInTheVillage · 03/05/2020 02:06

Thanks for the recommendation. We loved Unorthodox, so wondered if we'd like this also as it was a fascinating insight into the Hasidic way of life.

Is Shtisel a comedy?

beethecrackon24995 · 03/05/2020 02:23

No definitely not a comedy BUT (for me anyway) there are some moments where I find I am sat there grinning. It is slow paced and just about the daily life of an extended family. I lived in Israel for a while when I was younger so am a bit sentimental.about the Jerusalem element as scenes in ie shops or streets bring back memories but the real thing for me is the daily insight into a community that is extremely closed off. I have known a few Hasidic jewish people over the years (my old maths tutor was a Hasidic lady whose home I used to go to). The many rules are fascinating and in general from my experience most Jewish people find them completely separate to your average Jewish person (I'm Jewish but noway would I be accepted into their fold).

Sorry. I went off topic. It's slow but the characters are warm. I think it's one of those things you'll either really like or really dislike..my dh would hate it. I forgot to add, it's in Hebrew with subitles. It's 02.25 and I should be in bed but am.sat here watching it Grin

I loved it. It is slow paced but that makes it even better. I found it intersting, funny, sad, emotional and sometimes all at the same time. It is a drama set in a haridi jewish community in Israel. Although I realised this is a drama it still gives an insight into another way of life but at the same time making you realise that we all have the same hopes and dreams and that no one is ever completely good or completely bad.

Everyone will love this no matter what their culture, heritage or religion is.

imperialqueen · 03/05/2020 20:22

Oh and the lead actress from Unorthodox is in this too.

Spasiba · 03/05/2020 22:38

Fascinating viewing. And I have added Israel to my bucket list of holiday destinations.

TomHardysBitontheside · 03/05/2020 22:49

Having finished season 1, I've now watched 5 episodes of season two over the last two nights. I absolutely love it.
The characters are wonderful. It makes me laugh and it makes me cry. It's an incredibly beautiful show and I'll be gutted when I finish it.

blubellsarebells · 04/05/2020 02:45

I binge watched this over 3 days after watching unorthodox..
Its a joy to watch, slow to start but all of the characters are so warm and sympathetic.
The dad with the dog were some of my favourite scenes.
Kiva is just beautiful, i always fall for the commitment phobic, creative, dreamers.
The boy with the fish another one of my favourite scenes.

HoyaFlower · 04/05/2020 02:53

Thanks

whatsthebestname · 05/05/2020 21:20

I love it - got 4 left to watch but need hubby and kids out of the way. I like to watch it in total peace to absorb the subtitles and subtleties of the acting. It's fascinating.

TheVanguardSix · 05/05/2020 21:27

I love it! I haven't seen Unorthodox (though I did read the book and plan on watching the series). I love Shtisel. I'm just tucking into it and have only finished the first episode, but I find everyone very sympathetic. Michael Aloni is gorgeous!

Mucklowe · 06/05/2020 22:33

I love Shtisel. Israeli husband likes it too.

It's nice to see a representation of Ultra Orthodoxy that isn't fetishised, or focused on people leaving.

AnyFucker · 06/05/2020 22:37

This was one of my top 10 shows ever

DieSchottin93 · 08/05/2020 15:07

I just finished Shtisel today, loved it Grin I hope we don't have to wait too long for series 3!

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 08/05/2020 15:14

Michael Aloni is indeed gorgeous, he has such an expressive face and acts some scenes just with his eyes.
It's a great series. Also loved the actress who played his sister Giti?

user1471448556 · 08/05/2020 15:20

I absolutely love Shtisel. The characterisation is fantastic and the acting is bloody brilliant. They convey so much, sometimes without even saying much. Michael Aloni is a revelation - his eyes!! I don’t think I can recall someone as able to emote so deeply and sincerely with just the eyes! Highly recommend ... and I’m dreaming of visiting Israel post Covid.

lotusbell · 08/05/2020 20:14

I'm on episode 2, really enjoying it. Akiva reminds me of Joe Gilgun.

beethecrackon24995 · 09/05/2020 03:32

It's 03.30. Just finished watching the last 3 episodes. I loved it and already have a sadness as I have no more episides to watch. I feel I know the characters. Fabulous acting. No glitz. Very real. Superb

We have one episode left to watch and are both gutted. We absolutely love it! It’s so interesting and so gentle. No sex, no violence, but some very deep stuff going on! Hurry up already, season 3.

CaptainMyCaptain · 22/05/2020 12:00

I love this. I watched Unorthodox first but this is much better.

buckeejit · 22/05/2020 21:25

LOVED Shtisel. Had to shout it.

So heavy with emotion & nobody even kissed in it! Great characters & just wish there was more of it

CaptainMyCaptain · 25/05/2020 15:33

Akive is gorgeous but he must stink of cigarettes.
