How can I go from crying with laughter then sobbing like my heart is breaking the next all within one 30 minute programme.

It’s so good.
Anyone been watching?

The therapist is gross. Why give him any money?
(I haven't seen them all yet but I guess he'll ' see the light' eventually' ! )

Bloatedandconfused · 28/04/2020 22:56

It wasnt as good as the first series but I thought that it was more because Tony had passed through the angry stage of grief and was slowly coming to acceptance. The therapist and theatre bloke were not funny at all and completely unnecessary. I read that there might be a third series. I think they should leave it there.

The80sweregreat · 29/04/2020 10:17

It's lost it's way a bit with the therapist. Awful character.
Penelope Wilson is brilliant. Worth watching just for her
'You are the frog , Tony'!
Such a natural actress and good to see Peter Egan too. !

I don’t think it was as good as season 1 but still very good.
Penelope Wilton was excellent (as usual).

It did have a very impressive cast.

SebandAlice · 29/04/2020 10:36

Loved it. I skipped all the therapist scenes.

Boredsillyathome · 29/04/2020 11:08

Absolutely loved both seasons though have to agree the therapist was a bit much at times, lost my mum a couple years ago so really identify with the grief storyline, hope there will be a season 3

AHorseCalledElaine · 29/04/2020 12:23

The therapist and his friends were really coarse and crude. I wish I hadn't heard a word they said and I won't be watching Series 3 if they're in it.

Flymetothetoon · 29/04/2020 12:32

Finished watching this last night and was blubbering my eyes out at the ending.
Six episodes is really not enough - roll on Season 3!

Nachonacho · 29/04/2020 12:39

I bawled my eyes out watching this, more than series 1 from what I remember! Absolute brilliant though, Gervais is a genius! But couldn't stand the Therapist bits, bit too extreme for my humour Confused

Hohohole · 29/04/2020 12:45

Love it. Going to watch it again tonight because I need a good cry, but I will be fast forwarding the therapist. Nobody needs to hear that shit.

TaighNamGastaOrt · 29/04/2020 13:06

Loved season 1, cried and laughed. It was brilliant. I'm not a Ricky fan, but that converted me.
Am going to watch season 2 this weekend I just hope it's as funny and heart warming. Mixed reviews it seems

The80sweregreat · 29/04/2020 13:52

I love the journalist who believes in ghosts horoscopes and all things woo! Rickys put downs are great. ( I can't really see him as Tony only Ricky!)!
Ive a feeling the am dram man will get a speech made to him soon about love and tolerance.
Pat the postman makes me laugh too.

dayswithaY · 29/04/2020 13:57

The thing about Ricky is you either get him or you don't. I didn't mind the therapist as he was obviously there for shock value as that is what you normally get with Ricky's writing. In S1 it was Tony who got to say all the shocking and crude lines but because his character has evolved from angry to sad, they had to throw the therapist in to deliver them instead. Not sure the variety show worked either, Ricky does love a camp performer. And the "sex worker" character is just not convincing as someone standing round on street corners.

But, as people have said, I do think Ricky's female characters are well written. Lisa's character is so warm and also heartbreaking and that's how you feel his loss as a viewer. Same as Sandy and Penelope Wilton - they are just perfect. There may be a few clunky bits of the script (I can't bear the postman) and some of Tony's rants are predictable but other scenes like those with his poor Dad are just perfection. I think Ricky is very good at writing about human emotion. Wouldn't want to see a third series though, he should just leave it there.

The80sweregreat · 29/04/2020 14:17

The care home scenes really bring a tear to my eye! I get him and his rants. He is very marmite!

MyBlueMoonbeam · 29/04/2020 16:15

The thing about Ricky is you either get him or you don't.

Nope - perfectly possible to like some of his stuff dislike some 🤷‍♀️

SchadenfreudePersonified · 30/04/2020 20:31

I love this programme but I wish they wouldn't say the "see You Next Tuesday" word so much.

It is the one swear word which makes me cringe - it is vile.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 30/04/2020 21:42

I loved it, I'm really not a Ricky gervais fan but I love After Life.

The therapist scenes were awful though and unnecessary I thought. It might have been a good opportunity to show the benefits of counselling when dealing with grief rather than put people off therapy for life.

I sobbed for ages at the end though 'I can't sleep until you say goodnight' 😭

Doryhunky · 30/04/2020 21:46

The first series was a masterpiece and the best television I have ever seen. Second series lacked something but still good.

HopeClearwater · 30/04/2020 21:46

The therapist is very typical of what a lot of toxic blokes out there actually think. RG is making his own comment on that.

Cantdothis2020 · 30/04/2020 23:01

Enjoyed overall it but the bits with the therapist spoilt it. Not funny and gross.

RedRec · 01/05/2020 16:31

Absolutely loved it, just as much as the first series.
I like Paul Kaye but really hated the hideous therapist bits.
Love the postman and the sex worker.
Love it that Ricky clearly has no truck with self id.
Really, really love the homage to Ever Decreasing Circles in having Penelope Wilton and Peter Egan working together.

TitsalinaBumSquash · 01/05/2020 16:42

I love Ricky, I think he's a brilliant writer and Afterlife isn't like anything else on the tv. I thoroughly enjoyed it but think that should it now. (Although I will watch a 3rd season if he does another)

The80sweregreat · 01/05/2020 18:10

Well I watched the last episode and cried and cried. Absolutely brilliant !
