Did you know that Estelle Getty (Sophia) was actually a year younger, in real life, than Bea Arthur, who played her daughter Dorothy? Shock

They must have had a fabulous make-up artist, to have aged her up so very convincingly!

So so so loving this. Every episode Bea Arthur gets to deliver cracking lines, they play off each other so brilliantly.

I was quite young when this was first shown, I'm not sure there's been anything else with such fantastic female leads (SATC doesn't count, they're whiny and not witty even though SJP has good shoes). I don't remember Cybill or Empty Nest; was there another show with Candice Bergen, called Murphy Brown? Great shows with women leads I believe.

There was a British version made in the early 1990s (using the same scripts) and it was a disaster. It was called The Brighton Belles. Did any of you see it?

Sheila Hancock, Wendy Craig, Sheila Gish and Jean Boht were the four actresses in the lead roles, and the characters were all given different names from their US counterparts.

I was quite looking forward to it at the time, but it was so disappointing.

The show was cancelled halfway through the first - and only - series. Thankfully.

I remember The Brighton Belles. Well I remember it being on and being disappointed with it.

Such a good cast too but all I remember about it was that it fell flat.

I watched the Golden Girls the first time round and loved it. I thought that watching it all these years later, it might seem dated, but apart from the clothes, it isn't dated at all. The jokes, the characters, the storylines don't seem to have aged. It's bloody brilliant, great writing, terrific acting, really funny and heartwarming. Every weekday, my 4 year old daughter and I watch it and we both love it. My daughter adores Blanche!

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 09/05/2020 08:31

The problem with Brighton Belles as I remember it was that they just transferred the whole Golden Girls thing straight over, instead of taking the premise of a group of women living together and making the jokes and dialogue British-relevant.

pigsDOfly · 09/05/2020 14:25

Yes, American and British cultures are not interchangeable something the makers of the British programme seemed to overlook.

The characters are so much part of their own backgrounds: the southern belle, the dairy farmer's daughter, the old Sicilian mother they just don't translate.

So many of the references and jokes would just not work in a British setting, not to mention not working spoken in an accent that isn't typically American.

I've been recording them every day. Really enjoying watching them.

Thanks.

Where's the Golden Girls disappeared to?

There's no way we've seen all 180 episodes!

My favourite line "You'll have to excuse my mother. She had a small stroke a few years ago which left her...a complete burden"
