Have been trying to watch the JCS with Tim Minchin on The Show Must Go On YouTube channel, but can’t see the full video.
Has anybody managed to watch it?
Thanks in advance.

Fairyfingers I’m sure whistle down the wind was the musical that he had just written and it was either just opening or was about too. That’s why there was a lot of songs from it.

Glenn close was amazing

PerkingFaintly · 02/05/2020 10:22

Thank you! I've just watched ChasingSquirrels' link and that was awesome! Just the one song but, wow!

OpthalmosVerde · 02/05/2020 13:51

Glenn Close was absolutely phenomenal I agree. I actually quite rated Michael Ball’s Gethsamane, was nice seeing him do justice to something a little darker.

I don’t really care for WDTW either but think it was pretty current at the time, hence Boyzone (aw, poor Stephen Gateley).

I might put it on again later and ffwd through the windy bits! And most of Sarah Brightman because I’m sorry but she just irritates me.

Wonder what’s up next? Hoping for Evita or Sunset Boulevard.

Maybe the Cinderella workshop as a wildcard option? No idea if it was filmed

scaryreading · 02/05/2020 19:52

When does this one finish?

Standrewsschool · 03/05/2020 18:21

I didn’t like Glenn Close’s performance, but loved Michael Ball’s Gethsemane!

Evita would be good.

OpthalmosVerde · 03/05/2020 19:31

Been listening to the Evita movie soundtrack whilst cooking tonight Grin (and performing every part also, natch)

Anyone watch By Jeeves?

We did (I fell asleep for 15 mins to be fair) and quite enjoyed it. More than I thought we would. V v slow to start but improved and I liked the pig song and the Jeeves song.

Probably helps that I adore PG Wodehouse so wanted to enjoy it iyswim but Dd2 age 10 found it amusing as well.

Clearly not Stella but not as bad as expected.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 10/05/2020 16:52

I enjoyed the music and thought it was a clever idea.

But, it was slow to get going and (to me) suffered from being an American production, because some accents were all over the place which was a bit off-putting. That's just this particular cast though.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 10/05/2020 17:58

Canadian actually, oops.

BackforGood · 10/05/2020 18:09

Well, this has been disappointing last couple of weeks.

I LOVED Jesus Christ Superstar. That's been my favourite so far.
I loved Joseph as well - I've seen it before, but I just love the music and can sing along all way through.
I quite enjoyed the concert.
Phantom was good - though has always been one of my least favourites, so I just thought it "wasn't my turn" that week
Love Never Dies - I turned off after giving it 20mins
Jeeves - really not my thing - turn off that too after really trying to get into it.

Do hope it picks up again - as I was so excited to begin with at the idea of being able to re-visit so many wonderful musicals.

I loved Love Never dies and enjoyed the birthday one. I disliked Jeeves but never saw the attraction of PG Wodehouse

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 12/05/2020 18:29

It's Cats next week. It says the 1999 production, but I can't find much about it, so not sure if that's the one that was filmed for video? The one with John Partridge.

8misskitty8 · 12/05/2020 21:00

Yes, it’s the cats production with Elaine Paige and John partridge that was on dvd.
Jason gardiner is also in it, Hes the cat with the white face and black spot over an eye. Sir John mills is in it too.

OpthalmosVerde · 12/05/2020 21:41

Excited for Cats!

Didn’t bother with Jeeves. The whole point of this for me is comfort and nostalgia.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 13/05/2020 16:43

Jeeves reminded a bit of a cross between The Show That Goes Wrong and A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder (I think that was probably the piano).

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 15/05/2020 18:06

There's only 24 hours to watch Cats, not 48, so don't miss it if you were keen!

OpthalmosVerde · 15/05/2020 21:20

Thanks for that Polkadots! Was going to watch it tomorrow night. Will put it on after Gardener’s World then instead.

fairyfingers · 15/05/2020 21:50

So I've never seen Cats before. Wtf was that?

OpthalmosVerde · 15/05/2020 22:36

Lol. I remember reading one of the (many) scathing reviews of the new Cats live-action movie criticising with “well that was just 2 hours of stray cats introducing themselves” and thinking YES THAT IS WHAT CATS IS AND WE LOVE IT!!!

It’s based on a book of poetry, there isn’t really any proper storyline. But to experience it in real life is, or at least was at the time, something quite special. I think the effect of human performers dancing & singing as cats in an oversize garbage dump set (so you as the audience feel you are the same size as a cat) is kind of lost now we are so used to CGI and special effects etc. The whole production, costumes, makeup and choreography were pretty revolutionary I think. When I saw Cats as a child it was a bit of a marvel that the stage rotated!! (that was at the Palladium in early 90s I think). Now is bits of stage don’t move/people don’t fly on stage etc you’d be quite disappointed with a show.

OpthalmosVerde · 15/05/2020 23:15

Hmm maybe it wasn’t the Palladium I’m getting my childhood memories mixed up. I remember having dinner at Garfunkel’s afterwards, and that’s next to the Palladium.

ExpletiveDelighted · 16/05/2020 10:01

I'm about an hour in and about to give up, it's dire.

OpthalmosVerde · 16/05/2020 15:17

Ha, I guess it really is of it’s time!

I’ve really enjoyed it, so much so I’ve got it on again in the background this afternoon :-)

Still hoping for Evita or Sunset though!

LIZS · 16/05/2020 15:28

Watching Cats now. It was originally at the New London (now Gillian Lynne) theatre but dd and I saw it at the Palladium a few years ago. The physicality is very impressive in rl. Anyone missing it today , it is on Sky Arts tomorrow.

ExpletiveDelighted · 16/05/2020 15:30

I'd never seen it before so wasn't really sure what to expect, perhaps it just doesn't translate well to the small screen.

LIZS · 16/05/2020 16:41

Loved Sir John Mills.
