It's a three part drama about the Who Wants to be a Millionaire coughing scandal in 2001.

Anyone else planning on watching it?

In the original documentary about this, which was on TV soon after the court case, it speculated (perhaps as a joke) that there might indeed be a film of this whole thing. It thought the ideal actors would be: Hugh Grant as Charles, Cher as Diana, and John Cleese as Tecwen Whittock.

x2boys · 18/04/2020 08:06

I watched all three episodes last night ,and quite enjoyed it ,I don't understand why they made a big deal out of the fact he really struggled with the first few questions ,I have seen a few episodes like that ,where seemingly very intelligent contestants struggle to get to the £1000, Mark because they have no idea about popular soap characters or pop music etc ,I used to work with a guy I always used to joke of I was on WWTBAM I would have him as my phone a friend ,because he knew all kinds of random and obscure stuff ,but he would have been the type to not know that Gail was Audreys daughter in Corrie.

The80sweregreat · 18/04/2020 09:44

The strange thing was though they said on the programme that his wife had made him ' study' popular culture , pop music , soaps etc and he even mentioned Craig David ( when they were out running together) I admit they may not have mentioned the title of his album , but he had definitely heard of him as being a singer. Or was that just done to make us doubt him even more?

I would struggle with any soap questions other than Eastenders as I haven't watched Corrie since the late 80s ( but i know who Audrey's daughter is!)

Pelleas · 18/04/2020 09:47

I'm guessing the Craig David mention during the popular culture lessons was included for dramatic effect.

Pelleas · 18/04/2020 09:50

I could answer Corrie questions up to about 1992 because my mum watched it, but anything that happened in the Street after I left home is an unknown to me, and I don't watch any of the others.

xsquared · 18/04/2020 14:03

The episode has been uploaded on YouTube.

FlamingoAndJohn · 18/04/2020 14:19

Soaps like Corrie were much more part of the public consciousness then than they are now.

prh47bridge · 18/04/2020 14:33

The episode has been uploaded on YouTube

I believe the version on YouTube is the one where Celador have the coughs they believe came from Whittock. Note that Whittock is said to have coughed 192 times during filming of the episode. My understanding is that Celador only enhanced the coughs they consider to be significant.

fratellia · 18/04/2020 15:24

I thought it was 192 coughs in total from the whole audience/crew?

prh47bridge · 18/04/2020 15:36

Sorry - you are correct that they recorded 192 coughs in total. Some recent media reports attribute all 192 to Whittock but that is not correct.

EdwinaMay · 18/04/2020 16:02

I noticed Whittick didn't cough in court - must have been some miraculous recovery

chomalungma · 18/04/2020 17:22

Interesting thread on the law

Yes, very interesting article. To quote the author: I’ve had a number of people asking me if I agree that the drama proves that the Ingrams got a raw deal. If that is how the trial was conducted, I would completely agree that it does. But it wasn’t. And this wasn’t simply edited highlights, drawing from the real transcripts; it was a child’s re-imagining of the court process.

JediJim · 18/04/2020 19:41

With regards to the dog being killed l, it was actually a cat. The actor playing Ingram is allergic to cats in real life, so a dog was used.
We don’t actually know if this was true or not, nor any of the other things. It’s probably better for Ingram and the family to play the victim. Talking about how hard don’t by they were.
It’s also worth noting that Ingram was also found guilty of insurance fraud. For an Army Officer, he didn’t seem the most honest of characters.

AngryRedhead · 18/04/2020 19:53

The TV show combined two different events. In real life their cat was shot but survived, and their dog was beaten and kicked and later died of its injuries.

I doubt they faked the killing of their dog!

Janaih · 18/04/2020 20:01

Said in paper today the writer is keen to do a second series.

x2boys · 18/04/2020 20:04

A second series?? How it was a one off event

AngryRedhead · 18/04/2020 20:42

He’s not, it was a joke. He made a joke about doing a second series on the ITV podcast and the Sun pretended it was a genuine thing (and claimed it as their own scoop!).

Great article on all the legal errors and why they matter -

AngryRedhead · 19/04/2020 03:31

There are quite a few errors in that blogpost, to be fair.

Janaih · 19/04/2020 10:07

Ah right ok Blush

Sojo88 · 19/04/2020 12:35

Just finished this drama yesterday. What I found confusing was they made Diana seem guilty but made it look a bit like Charles hadn't realised anything dodgy was going on. Like he hadn't realised Diana had been in contact with Whittock. Which wouldn't make sense - Charles had to have been in on it so he knew to listen for the coughs!

I do think they're guilty - but, like others, will never understand other people harming their pets and getting angry at their children.

EdwinaMay · 19/04/2020 13:06

If you were going to give cough signals to the competitor you would cough through out the programme to avoid attracting attention when you coughed at the vital time.
Also the recordings were probably cut for the actual programme so did the 192 coughs come from the whole recording or just the bit that would have been televised.

RealJudas · 19/04/2020 14:44

Wasn't there a camera on Diana throughout? It would be telling to watch her reaction on each question and also to see whether she coughs at any time other than the Craig David question (which I have just watched on you tube and it looks to me like a fake cough, but maybe that's because I'm expecting it to be...).

prh47bridge · 19/04/2020 15:11

Like he hadn't realised Diana had been in contact with Whittock. Which wouldn't make sense - Charles had to have been in on it so he knew to listen for the coughs

Charles says he never spoke to Whittock and was devastated when he found out Diana had done so. If he is guilty it wouldn't make sense. However, if he was not guilty it makes perfect sense.
