Apologies if there's already a thread, but I couldn't see one. Anyone watching? Apparently this is a new series.

I'm waiting for the bench seats to make their inevitable appearance......Grin

I like Laura's design, but then I usually do.

The upstairs looks a bit like an Indian restaurant but I actually really like the overall design. It’s very clever without being totally whacky. (Sleep pods anyone?!)

Rebelwithallthecause · 14/04/2020 20:36

Laura’s always my preference too

Last weeks was atrocious

Tablefor4 · 14/04/2020 20:40

And Laura's is the standard suburban version

Tablefor4 · 14/04/2020 20:41

Couple need to decide a bit whether they want to live there forever - so bedroom numbers don't matter too much or having to keep 5 bedrooms for re-sale

LightACandleHoney · 14/04/2020 20:43

Laura’s is ok but it’s nothing special. I think they would use more of Robert’s house in the short term whereas with Laura’s there will be a ton of empty rooms.

CoolCarrie · 14/04/2020 20:47

Lovely wee baby and lovely house, glad they went for Laura’s design, more family friendly than Robert’s plan.

Tablefor4 · 14/04/2020 20:48

Quelle surprise

jay55 · 14/04/2020 20:58

I am envious of the 4 ovens. Not that I cook.
They've really gone for it. Quite often the final transformation shows some cheap stuff and shoddy finishing. This one looks so well done. Even if it is pretty conventional.

Tablefor4 · 14/04/2020 21:07

Yes - lovely end result Punam and Anuj if you are reading (and gorgeous Shivan) Wink. Loved the sparkling paint - filing that away.

longtompot · 14/04/2020 21:16

I loved what they did in the end. I didn't like Roberts upside down layout, but if he had kept the living and kitchen downstairs and done the courtyard garden bit, I think that would have been amazing!

CanIHaveAPenguinPlease · 14/04/2020 21:46

Roberts was too claustrophobic for me. I loathe upside downstairs living. Yes to it being like a men’s club. Much prefer Laura’s design. Thought what they did downstairs was fab.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 14/04/2020 21:58

Having been in maybe one or two bars when I was younger in the 80s and 90s, I'm glad that I'm not only one that thought social club when we saw Robert's design for the upstairs.

TheRattleBag · 14/04/2020 22:26

Once again, budget completely ignored. Said £120k, cost £180k.

Just where the heck do people get the extra money from? Found down the back of the sofa? It's the same on nearly all these sort of house project programmes (George Clarke I'm looking at you!) and is utterly demoralising for those of us who would genuinely have to stick to a budget.

CanIHaveAPenguinPlease · 14/04/2020 22:49

A loan? That’s what we did as once we’d started downstairs we then decided to do upstairs at the same time. As we hadn’t factored it in we needed a loan.

littlejalapeno · 14/04/2020 23:07

Do you think Robert has shared in a bench seating factory?

I literally spat out my wine when he said he didnt believe in giving rooms labels! He does come out with some absolute corkers.

Loved his idea and it mightve worked for a more creative career/ yoga teacher couple, but it wouldn’t have suited the actual couple or their lifestyle. Practical Laura understands her client and wins the day again. And in Louboutins too.

BruceAndNosh · 14/04/2020 23:08

Not only did Robert do the ubiquitous bench seating, it was also that nasty shade of tan brown that he loves. Does his design software only have one bench seat colour option?
There was also so much wasted space in his design with 2 extra stairs and the side corridors around the courtyard.

PickAChew · 14/04/2020 23:13

All I could think of was the fact that they spent nearly as much money as our house cost us and have no curtains in the bedrooms!

covetingthepreciousthings · 14/04/2020 23:35

Do you think Robert has shared in a bench seating factory?

Grin can't wait for next week with all the plants under the bench seating.

I REALLY want to see inside his house, I wonder if he was bench seating and it's all that shade of brown.

covetingthepreciousthings · 14/04/2020 23:38

Watched tonight's and my two main things were :

  • I couldn't believe how much they spent or how much their budget was, would it not be easier to buy a new house? I mean I guess if you like the location, but it just seemed like the whole house needed completely redesigning.
  • I also couldn't believe how many chairs they had in the finished design, to say there was only 2 adults and 1 baby, I think I counted about 15-17 in their kitchen / diner. I wasn't sure what the small glass table was for at the end of the breakfast bar?

I guess if you had a big family maybe you'd need so many, but was anyone else surprised at how many chairs there were?!

Rummikub · 14/04/2020 23:45

I love this show. It does feel as though Laura designs with the clients in mind as opposed to Robert's 'must use banquette seating'!

LadyEloise · 14/04/2020 23:50

Laura's deign was so much more practical. All i could think of was if they had children - which they did- beautiful baby- it would be a nightmare trying to keep them off that roof garden.
Reselling Robert's "house" would have been difficult too I'd imagine.

LizzieMacQueen · 15/04/2020 08:07

I thought the woman was being honest about how tough a year it had been: I took that to mean financial too, which was to be expected as they went 50% over budget.

They must have a very large extended family (they said 30 at the mother's recent party) so that'll be why they need all those chairs.

Loved their bedroom/en suite.

Looking forward to next week's.

littlejalapeno · 15/04/2020 09:00

@covetingthepreciousthings me too! Bet you it’s brown leather, heavy green curtains, has “honest” raw materials on the walls and floors, and architectural windows the make the most of the suns path.

I think he’s rather a grand and intellectual architect- the kind I would fear working with m, because they would insist that the look of the build was more important than your needs for the space! Yes it’s very clever, but by contrast Laura seems to respond to the clients needs, which is usually family needs and a few mast-have lifestyle boxes ticket. Although last week Robert did appeal to the clients needs and their background and that’s why they went with his.

I do love this programme and love how relaxed the homeowners look in their new environments. Makes it all look worth the craziness of the build!

LadyEloise · 15/04/2020 09:39

I agree littlejalepeno re Robert being " a grand and intellectual architect"
Architecture students would probably be expected to be in awe of his original, innovative ideas, though to the plebs - me- it's all a bit whacky, brown and impractical.
Laura would hear what I want and design it for me.

In Ireland we have a "tv star architect" on a tv show called Room to Improve. I wouldn't use him (if I won the Lotto ) as he does what he thinks is best and is quite insistent, despite misgivings by the house owner. Perhaps he's different with an "off the telly" commission Conflict makes for a more interesting tv show Smile
