Apologies if there's already a thread, but I couldn't see one. Anyone watching? Apparently this is a new series.

I'm waiting for the bench seats to make their inevitable appearance......Grin

Glad I'm not the only one who thinks Roberts style architecturally is stuck in a rut and his dress sense and hair isn't great either. And what's up with his teeth?

WarriorsComeOutToPlayay · 01/05/2020 23:36

Is there any need to be rude about an architect's teeth?

CanIHaveAPenguinPlease · 02/05/2020 07:51

That’s a bit personal cushion - I hate this mania to have to get teeth fixed. Mine are fairly straight but yucky brown due to medication. I can’t whiten them as I have a gag reflex & with my medication isn’t really recommended. 🤷🏻‍♀️

cushioncovers · 02/05/2020 08:21

I'm not being rude. It just seems to me he's had work done in his teeth and they look too big for his mouth. It's distracting imo.

Altuve · 02/05/2020 08:32

This thread has turned from being a genuinely pleasant discussion about the programme and the designs shown each week, to being a bit of a Laura-worship and Robert-bashing thread - I’m very personal ways. I think I’m going to bow out. This really isn’t very pleasant to read anymore.

Carriemac · 02/05/2020 08:45

I have to say I think both architects are excellent, and seem like lovely people. They are a great contrast to each other, and Roberts vision spurs the ,more laura on. I’d happily have either of design my or ideally get them to collaborate on it ( when my lottery win comes in)

ArgumentativeAardvaark · 02/05/2020 09:23

Just discovered this thread. DH and I have been HUGE fans of this show since we stumbled upon the first episode of the first series hidden away on iPlayer, settled down to watch it and realised that the house was at the end of the street where I grew up! Robert won that one- it was an ex LA house lived in by a churchy couple with lots of kids. He put an offset extension in the back and gave them a raised music room at the front. They ditched the bench seating, of course, and put in a sofa, but it ended up fairly faithful to the original design. Last time we were up there visiting family I insisted on driving back to the street to have a nose and we saw the man lounging in his music room through the massive plate glass window Grin.

I’ve read all 7 pages and here are my thoughts:
Angela Scanlon is bloody marvellous. I love her sarky little digs and the way she asks the question that you were thinking. He shoes are ridiculous, but in a good way. She also presents Robot Wars- a woman of many talents.

I agree with @Carriemac - I had Ramp Husband pegged as controlling from the second the wife said that he sometimes “forgot” to put the ramps down before he left in the morning. “Joint decision not to have a ramp” - my arse.

Laura Jane Clark does NOT dress like a solicitor. I am a solicitor. We are nowhere near as stylish as she is! I braided a bit of my hair last week in direct tribute to LJC. My husband, who NEVER comments on clothes, randomly piped up that he loved her green and orange maxi dress at the end of the last one. I love how we see her welding at the beginning.

I got to 6 pages before someone finally said what I have been thinking for ages @SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius- how would they stop the cushions sliding forward on those bench seats? He’s always imagining people spraying and lounging all over them. You’d need to stick fabric on the benches and heavy duty Velcro or something. And yes, would be massively uncomfortable with no springs. I would like to see a “bench seating mechanics” special insert with Robert showing us a real one not just a CGI version. But nobody ever chooses them so probably impossible!

I loved when they all lay on the floor at the end of the last one. I also thought that the woman in the couple clearly found a new lease of life project managing the build.

My friend was on a George Clarke Old House New Home. They dress the finished house with loaned furniture that goes back as soon as the shoot is over. I get the sense that they don’t do that so much in this one, though I do have my suspicions about some of the ornaments.

The Temple on the Hill was the most hilarious thing I have even seen on a makeover show.

What do people think of Kirstie and Phil’s Love it or List it? We enjoy that too, and often comment on how Kirstie (who clearly has an architect advising her) would redesign the YHMP houses. The Sarah Beeny one sounds good, will look it up, thanks for the tip. I wonder if SB still favours a corner bath?

ArgumentativeAardvaark · 02/05/2020 09:25

“Spraying”? Yuck. That was meant to say “sprawling”!

ArgumentativeAardvaark · 02/05/2020 09:29

Oh and my final comment- they obviously film the reveal of the design twice- once with the goggles on, and once without. It always amazes me that the couples are quite good actors.

Oh and a final final bonus thought- all the trendy intern types bustling about studio- extras played by actors, or actual VR engineers doing the work to create the visuals? My money is on the former.

Brillig · 02/05/2020 09:41

I don't really understand Love it or List it Argumentative (apart from the fact that 'list it' isn't a common expression over here...or is that just me?!). What I don't get is that they spend ALL their savings on getting their house improved and then at the end of it, one of them says, 'yeah, but I still want to move, so we're going to sell'.

Yes, I know they'd get an enhanced price for the updated house - possibly - but they've got no extra funds to fall back on for moving expenses etc., or updating their new house, because they've spent them all!

OP posts:
ArgumentativeAardvaark · 02/05/2020 09:59

@Brillig I figure that the process of viewing other houses gives them a sense of what is out there and they tailor their renovation accordingly, as well as getting some design ideas. So if they think that they might end up moving later they spend less on the renovation. What I do wonder is whether they ever start the process with couples who decide “yeah, we’d just like to buy one of these new houses right now” and just don’t do the renovation bit.

covetingthepreciousthings · 02/05/2020 10:17

My friend was on a George Clarke Old House New Home. They dress the finished house with loaned furniture that goes back as soon as the shoot is over. I get the sense that they don’t do that so much in this one, though I do have my suspicions about some of the ornaments.

I've wondered this. For example with the last one (actually maybe the last two), the finished interior has looked very polished and just totally not like the original home owners style. I mean maybe it gave them the push to make it look more polished, but I do wonder whether the project manager they have on the show helps with the finishing touches..

I'd love it if they did a 'revisited' show down the line to find out how they are finding the builds and whether there are any regrets or changes.

BekindStayhome · 02/05/2020 22:33

I don't much like the Robert hate here. It's a fun programme and they are probably pushed by directors to certain styles.
What I do want to know though is the question someone up thread raised about how cushions stay on bench seating. I actually fancy some for a bay window but can't see how we wouldn't end up on the floor every time!

Momniscient · 02/05/2020 23:51

Regarding slippy bench seat cushions, here are my thoughts. Some more serious than others Grin

  1. A small bit of wood at the front of the bench that isn't tall enough to sink into your knees, but tall enough to sort of bookend the cushion in.
  2. A bunch of those 'rug non-slip' mat doodahs.
  3. An elaborate series of adhesive velcro strips.
  4. Staples. Remove stuffing from cushions, staple the fabric to the wood of the pallets, put stuffing back in.
  5. Magnets. Lots of magnets. Not suitable for residents with interesting piercings or metal prostheses.
  6. Weighted cushions i.e. not actually filled with padding but with leftover concrete from the bench itself.
  7. Dovetailed cushions. So the cushion isn't actually a rectangular cuboid but has little feet underneath which match little posts in the wood. So they slot together.
  8. Bungee cords starting from a brace at the back of sofa, all the way around the cushion, and attached to the back again.
SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 03/05/2020 12:52

Or big poppers - glued to the wood, and sewn onto the cushions, then popper them on.

Or fasten ties to the back of the bench seats, and tie the cushions on.

ArgumentativeAardvaark · 03/05/2020 13:26

Ha ha living your increasingly outlandish suggestions @Momniscient!
Another option is to Put a lip at the front of the enchanted, full with compost and grow a lovely bed of sedum, creating a sort of organic non-slip matting. Cushions dyed to a precise sludge green match with the succulent underbed.

ArgumentativeAardvaark · 03/05/2020 13:27

Enchanted? ! Benches. Although enchanting the cushions I s of course another option. Stick on-ium no leviosa!

Colour me smug, @Brillig - depression eating, steroid eating and lockdown eating have given me an arse that is its own cushion - and then some!

Momniscient · 03/05/2020 18:14

Oooh, a sedum sofa. Love it @ArgumentativeAardvaark

@Brillig - what a good idea! Why didn't I think of that. I'll see myself out.

To be fair, I have a corner sofa that I'm constantly putting the cushions back on again (we have tried the non-slip mat thingies and am shortly to try the velcro method!) so it's not just a bench seating problem. Any sofa where it's not all stitched together, really.

BekindStayhome · 03/05/2020 23:12

Excellent ideas Grin

fascinated · 04/05/2020 20:50

I love this show. But yes, didn’t like ramp man much.

BinkySodPlop · 05/05/2020 19:28

So.... Any early predictions for tonight? Aside from benches and skylights.

Brillig · 05/05/2020 20:03

No predictions yet Binky but definitely plenty of bh ss
