The Trouble With Maggie Cole

Very disappointing. Such a good cast, but a ridiculous storyline. It might have made a bit more sense if she had hinted at scandals in the village without mentioning names, and then everyone would be wondering who it could be. A shame, but I won't be watching next week.

I don't expect there to be a second series. How would it begin? All the issues from the first series were tied up very neatly.

pigsDOfly · 09/04/2020 18:23

No I wouldn't bother watching a second series.

Only stuck this one out because there's very little on at the moment that I want to watch.

FlatulantTrousers · 09/04/2020 20:13

A second series wouldn't have to be about the same stuff. Maybe each series could centre around an overall cautionary tale type theme? The dangers of gossip was the first, but there are other things I'd like to see done. Wasn't Maggie's DIL having a baby? Can you imagine how much hard work she'd be as a grandmother? I'm sure there's also plenty more scandal that could go on, especially in a small town.

pigsDOfly · 09/04/2020 22:26

@FlatulantTrousers Yes, I could definitely see Maggie's DIL becoming a regular starter of MIL threads on MN.

Blondeshavemorefun · 10/04/2020 16:43

why did the pub man vanish, cant rem his proper secret

Handbaghag · 10/04/2020 16:46

AWOL from army

WaterIsWide · 10/04/2020 16:48

I watched the final episode out of curiosity.

I was open mouthed at the audacity of Maggie to sit next to Julie Hesmondhalgh's (can't remember the character's name) bedside whilst in hospital and start wittering on. Jeez....

Funny plot twist that she was awake and listening to every word though.

Glad the bad guys/drug dealers are likely to get their comeuppance. Even if it's on unrelated charges i.e. running her over.

I really wish they hadn't set fire to the money and it went to the rightful owner instead. So sad the old lady's life savings just got wasted like that.

I didn't quite catch what the problem with the young couple and the other young couple with the baby was all about.

Why did the money burning couple go along with the lottery win gossip in the end ?

midsomermurderess · 10/04/2020 19:01

Maggie is a ghastly character. Passive aggressive and so self centred it's almost an illness. Everything is about her, the whole 'it's all my fault' thing, and then everyone having to reassure her. She's a horror.

pigsDOfly · 10/04/2020 19:27

I was thinking that, midsomer, when she was waffling to whatshername, can't remember the characters name, while she thought she was badly injured in her hospital bed.

It was all me, me, me.

Awful person, but in the end everyone seemed to forgive her and love her for her 'quirky but lovable' character. Even her DIL seemed to end up becoming fond of her.

Don't understand it, I thought she was a ghastly, woman.

WeWantSweet · 10/04/2020 21:21

The grandson stole his grandma's money, hid it in a bonkers place, it was found by a couple who wound up bonkers burning it and it was all smiles and knowing nods and winks between them as if nothing wrong had happened! Er, what?

WeWantSweet · 10/04/2020 21:23

Correction, stolen by a couple who bonkers burnt it..

pollyhampton · 10/04/2020 21:27

I thought it was ok but hated the pub landlord story. How could he be a landlord but be on the run? Didn't understand him going on the run again from the hospital.

FiveFootTwoEyesOfBlue · 10/04/2020 21:29

The thing that spoilt it for me is that I find it so utterly unconvincing that the writer guy (from Casualty) would get together with Maggie's best friend. He's quite cool and sexy and a successful writer and would have his choice of loads of women and he falls in love with a not especially attractive primary school teacher? Not believable. Maybe the casting is wrong.

WeWantSweet · 10/04/2020 21:55

Such a wasted opportunity for a non police drama, as the plausibility factor was so unnecessarily off the scale it's insulting.

FlatulantTrousers · 11/04/2020 12:23

@FiveFootTwoEyesOfBlue funnily enough, I thought that about the barlady and her boyfriend. They looked totally wrong together. She looked too old for him and the size difference was Miss Piggy and Kermit proportions. She kept banging on about how she was the best thing that ever happened to him and being too good for him etc, yet I think he could've had his pick of the ladies.

Although I did think the writer and Jill were cute together. I got a sense of social awkwardness and thoughtfulness from him, that would make him less likely to be interested in looks and more about personality.
