For all those saying they shouldn’t have done it or wanted entertainment then why on earth did you watch it? It was clear from the TV guides it was covering covid and even if you didn’t read them did you honestly think a hospital drama would just ignore it?

If anything it should have been compulsory viewing for every idiot that has not worn a mask, protested for lockdown to be over or has denied this whole thing is a conspiracy

This and the Holby City episode was fantastic television and hopefully made those that ignore the news think a little bit more

Exactly. This.
JustDanceAddict · 02/01/2021 22:48

Amazing. Hopefully it will get through to a few covidiots too.
Poor Noel though - I’ll miss his character.

MaryLeeOnHigh · 02/01/2021 23:44

What was particularly good was some of the vignettes - the doctor having to phone relative after relative to tell them that the person they loved was dying and no, they can't come to see them; the sheer terror of someone about to be put on a ventilator that they may not survive, and their relatives trying to be brave whilst knowing this could be goodbye; the realisation of the vulnerability of people in care homes; the problems of a nurse with a hearing problem when she can't lip read. Very well written and acted.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 03/01/2021 00:01

Just watched this and came to see if there was a thread - brilliantly done, and very emotional. I wonder how it will play out with the paramedic’s pregnancy storyline? Not sure where we are time-wise but surely she has been pregnant for ages now?

The raw faces of the staff because of the PPE also really struck me.

Everybodyfednobodydead · 03/01/2021 00:01

So emotional and accurately portrayed. Me and my colleagues have felt exactly the same in a&e and still do. The phone call scene broke me. After witnessing that scenario to many times in real life. I hope more people will take it seriously now. We are on our knees

AGnu · 03/01/2021 00:22

I stopped watching Casualty about a year ago but saw someone on Twitter talking about this episode being award-worthy. My eyes hurt from crying now. I rarely cry at anything on TV but I was proper sobbing!

Is Holby similar? I want to watch it if it's good but after catching up with EastEnders last night & Casualty tonight, I might have to wait a day or 2 before doing Holby. I feel so lucky that I can just hunker down in my house, not turn on the TV & not have to deal with any of it!

yankeedoodledandee · 03/01/2021 00:28

Is Holby similar?

I like Holby and they did an episode that addressed covid upon return but it wasn't anywhere near the level that casualty achieved. It was good, casualty was outstanding.

Sennedd · 03/01/2021 02:08

Casualty was brilliant tonight. I had tears in my eyes and I never cry. From what I can gather from NHS workers I know it seemed accurate. Hopefully some of the people careless of their own safety and that of others might think again after watching.

Spidey66 · 03/01/2021 02:24

When they all started clapping that someone was leaving, I was so hoping it was Noel....i supposed that's what they wanted us to think, but it was pregnant lady. I was so sad that Noel died, he was such a likeable character.

It was good how they showed the red marks on faces caused by PPE and I did feel for Jade, unable to lipread so struggling to understand as a result.

Please don’t turn this political or namecall people. I don’t wear a mask because I am exempt and I this episode, excellent thought it was , does not change that or make me feel guilty. People are entitled to their opinion and while I don’t share it, this vilifying has to stop.
MaryLeeOnHigh · 03/01/2021 08:29

It looks as if she got herself furloughed when lockdown started or similar using the asthma excuse. But presumably we'll get an update that fills in the gaps at some point as the baby must have been born by now.

SoupDragon · 03/01/2021 09:26

this vilifying has to stop.

People who refuse to wear a mask (as opposed to can't) deserve to be vilified, as do those refusing to isolate or denying it all.

SoupDragon · 03/01/2021 09:28

That seems to be how Holby did it. They skipped forward in time after the Lockdown episode. It'll be a bit weird with a pregnancy story though! I assume they had some stuff lined up for that, including Ethan finding out and having to tell her about the Huntington's. I guess that will be bumped to when he notices Fenicia is on maternity leave!

Skipsurvey · 03/01/2021 09:40

the hospital where i work lost a staff member to covid early in the pandemic Sad

thegreylady · 03/01/2021 10:33

Just to add that despite finding the episode both harrowing and terrifying, I also feel it is the most effective episode of Casualty I have ever seen. It will be a wake up call for many people who have read the theory behind what is happening but failed to understand the reality. It may seem odd to describe a tv drama as reality but it seemed to me to be more ‘real’ than most news reports. I think it was the stuff tv awards are made of.
Brilliant

SoupDragon · 03/01/2021 10:36

I think many will write it off as pure fiction though.

purpleme12 · 03/01/2021 10:37

I doubt the episode, if watched by these people who don't believe, will convince those people

Signoftimes · 03/01/2021 10:40

I have a sister who is a senior nurse on ICU at a hospital. She has told me the harrowing stories of what she has seen, keeping back some of the detail I have no doubt, she has contracted COVID and now has long COVID. Yet she still feels it is her duty to loo after people even though I can see it taking a mental and physical toll on her. My more highly paid roll in IT embarrasses me and highlights what is wrong in this country/world. She deserves so much more.

But....watching casualty, albeit a TV show, really has affected both my wife and I massively. It was harrowing, heart wrenching and humbling.

I woke up this morning feeling the need to read others thoughts and fell upon this thread.

Al1langdownthecleghole · 03/01/2021 10:48

I agree soup. And yet if anything, they underplayed it. 3 staff positive and one death is low compared with reality.
CherryValanc · 03/01/2021 11:07

Just watched it. It was really well done wasn't it. How it unfolded and at the start how they didn't know things and learnt. How this effects those working through it.

So sad Noel won't begin it anymore. He was a brilliant character.

(Agree that Connie's make up - though well done was more dramatic than others!!)

I would hesitate to say I enjoyed it, as that suggests fun and gaining pleasure, but what has amused me is the posters who thought it should have been lighthearted.

Casualty has always reflected current events and been political about NHS so thinking it'll be a out a thing else is daft.

Calabasa · 03/01/2021 11:14

i didnt say it needed to be light-hearted, we just didnt need another slap in the face via an entertainment drama/soap on a saturday night.

Holby are doing an amazing job of working within the pandemic with dramatic license, there was no reason last nights Casualty couldn't do/have done the same.

SoupDragon · 03/01/2021 11:16

Holby are doing an amazing job of working within the pandemic with dramatic license, there was no reason last nights Casualty couldn't do/have done the same

Is this the same Holby that had a "slap in the face" episode to kick the new series off?

Al1langdownthecleghole · 03/01/2021 11:27

I'm not sure a tinselled, what are we wearing for the staff xmas party episode where the medical drama centres around a patient with chest pain who turns out to have eaten too many mince pies instead of having an acute event would have cut it this year...

Skipsurvey · 03/01/2021 11:39

it was rather preachy, and although it is not normally light hearted it is normally laughable

Councilworker · 03/01/2021 11:55

Would Charlie really be working if Fenisha was able to be placed on non-front line duties. Surely at 70+ he'd have been redeployed to 111 or similar. I will admit I absolutely hate Charlie as a character now.

I thought Jade sitting with the patients was very moving and is what nurses do in real life. And the sores on their faces from wearing PPE all day for days on end.
