The Trials of Gabriel Fernandez *TRIGGER WARNING*

Started watching the first episode today when the baby napped, and I think it’s fair to say, even the first 5 minutes made for some the three most horrific tv I’ve ever watched Sad
Anyone else started it??

Prosecutors got me again in closing, when he asked what they thought Gabriel saw last, was it his mum, what was he thinking "why doesn't anyone love me".

I've watched many a thing but that, that made me hold my breath. Because it was very likely true. The images and that will remain with me for life.

ThePolishWombat · 29/02/2020 17:46

@MrsDeltaB even more emotional considering the prosecutor was an abused child himself Sad

@TheVanguardSix haha! I recognised your name - I usually don't!! 😂

QueenOfOversharing · 29/02/2020 17:57

What about when he cried hugging Gabriel's dad in court?

ThePolishWombat · 29/02/2020 18:09

@QueenOfOversharing everything about his biological dad broke my heart.
Yeah he’s done jail time etc, but I’d suggest that the prosecutor is a great judge of character or else he wouldn’t be in the job he’s in right? And the fact that he talked about Gabriel’s dad the way he did and hugged him like that at the end of it, says it all

OP posts:
QueenOfOversharing · 29/02/2020 18:16

@ThePolishWombat absolutely agree. He said he knew what his offences were & tbh he sounded like he really felt sorry for him. As you say - he's the DA, so you'd expect him to vilify the dad who's a felon. But he clearly knows he's not a bad guy. The photo with Gabriel on his shoulders - I was sobbing.

QueenOfOversharing · 29/02/2020 18:17

I posted this on my FB last night

ThePolishWombat · 29/02/2020 18:21

@QueenOfOversharing me too Sad
The fact that there were people who loved him, and yet his “mother” who didn’t even want him to be born kept him in her custody for the sake of a fucking welfare check makes me sick to my stomach.
I’m sure due to his convictions, the biological father wouldn’t have been granted full custody anyway, but he clearly loves his son - he just made some bad choices which led to him being unable to protect him. I can’t even begin to imagine his pain as a result of that.

Mamabear88 · 29/02/2020 18:33

I've only watched the first two episodes and they broke my heart. Life is such a lottery. That poor little boy never stood a chance with a "mother" like that.

QueenOfOversharing · 29/02/2020 18:42

@ThePolishWombat the welfare cheque killed me! Yeah, his dad must be so broken by it all. I hope he has contact with the other 2 children now.

WaxOnFeckOff · 29/02/2020 18:46

I think, despite his obvious criminal tendencies, the fact that the eldest 3 children were all his, showed that at some point he was supplying some kind of continuity as a family unit? Seems like, as he was in prison when Gabriel was born, the mother just did what she felt like, which was not take Gabriel home from hospital when he was born.

I'm glad that the ER nurse who thought he'd never had a days love in his life was wrong and that he'd at least had a happy life as a baby and young child. But it also shows how little time it takes for stuff to go severely wrong and escalate to the point it did.

Homophobia from the mother started all this. I think that she had made allegations of abuse towards her uncle and his partner so that's why he'd then been passed to the grandparents.

Fairylea · 29/02/2020 18:46

I am watching this now. Just horrendous and reminds me of Daniel Pelka in the UK. Not enough is done to step in when abuse is suspected.

Fairylea · 29/02/2020 18:47

This is another similar case... there are so many it’s just heartbreaking

Crabonastick · 29/02/2020 20:34

I’m watching the episode with Virginia and Ezekiel testifying. I am sobbing when the little girl is saying she is sorry she wouldn’t let him play with her- I know it’s not her fault but the poor boy must have felt so lonely all the time. This is so so heartbreaking

ThePolishWombat · 29/02/2020 21:26

Crabonastick the brother and sister broke my heart too.
Made it even worse when one of the professionals (the child abuse doctor maybe?) said the abuse being focussed solely on one child while other children in the home aren’t abused. I’m assuming that witnessing the abuse and ultimately their brother’s murder, just made them so terrified of receiving the same treatment they just went along with whatever they were told

OP posts:
Fairylea · 29/02/2020 21:54

That pattern of abuse / non abuse of siblings is very common. The siblings don’t speak out because they are afraid if they do the abuser will turn on them, often to the point they begin participating in the abuse towards their sibling themselves. It’s well documented in the “child called IT” series. Just horrendous.

Rina84Roo · 01/03/2020 02:53

Just finished watching all the episodes. It is horrific.

About midway I started questioning if the bf was actually the one that did it although he witnessed it so deserves punishment.

Gabriel told the school it was his mum hurting him. His siblings in their interviews said it was the mum doing stuff to him. So was it the bf?

They both should of got the same sentence I feel she got it easier yet feeling she was the instigator of it all.

QueenOfOversharing · 01/03/2020 03:11

@Rina84Roo I agree, but she got a reduced sentence for pleading guilty. I was thinking I hope the other inmates fuck her up.

Rina84Roo · 01/03/2020 04:37

Hopefully Queen they hate her sort in prison him too as well.

She knew she would get the same so crumbled and plead. She was only thinking of herself not her poor gorgeous boy.

I found the series focused on him being the actual murderer but I am not convinced I think it was her.

QueenOfOversharing · 01/03/2020 05:04

@Rina84Roo I keep meaning to check how long he'll be on death row for. I am 100% sure she was the main instigator - she showed zero remorse. That recording of her shouting to him in the jail cells - she's evil.

ThePolishWombat · 01/03/2020 08:28

@QueenOfOversharing I think we can rest easy in the knowledge that child killers generally don’t do well in prison.
I watched a documentary years ago about an American women’s prison, and one inmate who had killed her own child was in some serious danger from the other inmates.
Maybe Pearl Fernandez will get just a little glimpse of how it feels to live her life in fear.

OP posts:
QueenOfOversharing · 01/03/2020 09:01

@ThePolishWombat I really hope so. I can completely understand that the other women would want to hurt her. Let's hope she gets a taste of that.

ThePolishWombat · 01/03/2020 09:13

@QueenOfOversharing I’m guessing she will be kept away from the general population as much as possible, but inmates have ways of making things work in prison don’t they?
Look at that evil piece of shit “Britain’s Worst Paedophile” who was murdered in prison a couple of months ago....he was supposed to be protected in prison to prevent that. But if someone wants it bad enough, they’ll find away to hurt/kill the scummiest of the scum in there.

OP posts:
QueenOfOversharing · 01/03/2020 09:52

If I was a prison warden I might make a mistake & allow people to get close to her...

I was also wondering if she has anyone who still supports her. Clearly not those members of her family we saw.

OnNaturesCourse · 02/03/2020 21:56

How many episodes are there, ie how long to binge watch it on a child free day?
