I thought that sister MJ's garden was going to be terrible ,with the nicked blankets, but IMO she seems to be getting over her dementia rather than worsening, like dm, which is truly a miracle.

Adoption and fostering was quite different in those days , of course the mum should have been allowed to have SOME contact with May, though it would have been difficult from Hong Kong

I actually want the Turners to have May. She has settled so well as an evil twin and is so happy. We don't even have proof that this lady is May's mum do we?

I was surprised at how easily the adoption agency just accepted that she was May's mother with no proof.

The other odd thing was that May's 'mum' was sitting in a park with a baby in a pram, she was also shown holding the baby at the end, not one person mentioned that baby. Unless I missed it.

I do know that in the early 60s babies were routinely taken away from unmarried mothers. My half sister was adopted that way, her young mum was given no choice. It was all kept a secret.

May's mother was a nanny do assume baby was her charge.

@ppeatfruit they said she was a nanny looking after the children of a British ambassador. This is the job she would lose if she kept May.

It seems a bit unlikely though that a woman with a drugs-past in the 1960s would have been given a job as a nanny, don't you think? Particularly coming from HK where traditionally that type of role would be given to women from the Philippines.

This was donkeys years before DBS or any kind of check being possible, I suppose potential employers would rely on her references. These might have been supplied by her rehab institution or a priest or similar.

I hadn't really thought about the DBS angle at all really. Just thinking that people would generally have been very much less forgiving about drug abuse. However, you're probably right that one good reference would have been enough to secure such a job.

I love call the midwife and have only just caught up with this series. Very confused about the new doctor, he seemed lovely the first time we saw him, definitely wondering what is going to happen with this drug storyline
