What is going on with Mother Mildreds make up?

I've read that book. She didn't come across as a particularly nice person in real life. I got that impression form something written by the producers of the series as well. For all her talk about her vocation being nursing. She gave it up not long after to become a professional musician.

I was suprised that Sr Julienne did' t give the money back or give it to charity.

Two annoying things in the episode:

  1. The prize draw for the cinema tickets was daft. What if the winning ticket had been picked in the first few tickets. Then no money would have been raised.
  2. People saying “enjoy!” This is an Americanism only used in this country in the last ten years or so. Certainly not in the Sixties.
PlomBear · 03/02/2020 12:45

Oh dear, I am definitely Team Jenny! I hope they bring her back at some point for a one-off.

Polkadotdelight · 03/02/2020 12:54

I assumed that in addition to her experiencing what life really was like for a normal middle age woman they also were trying to show the sacrifice that she had made too. It's not likely that she would have been sat in the cinema with a choc ice as a nun.

Well I wondered about this at first too. But maybe she was running it in the way I have heard it rumoured some tombolas are run in that she wouldn't put the winning ticket in straight away but let it run for a bit first. Gasp!

Winterfishing · 03/02/2020 13:53

Also the tombola tickets weren't even folded and the jar was see through.

If anyone had any bloody sense, they'd have gay good look at the ticket before choosing it.

Plus, how expensive was the cinema that two tickets was an exciting raffle prize?

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 03/02/2020 13:56

I thought the cinema was relatively cheaper then?

IsolaPribby · 03/02/2020 14:05

I really enjoyed that episode, sweet and moving.

I loved the crocheted chevron blanket at the end, definitely not teal!

But I was left hoping that no babies would choose to arrive while they were all at the cinema!

I was always under the impression that cinema tickets were very affordable even for very ordinary people in those days (not the case anymore - spent £25 taking DD to the cinema t'other week).

Saucery · 03/02/2020 16:04

I didn’t get the impression she used all the savings for the cinema, as she held two coins in her hand. I was very surprised she used any of it at all though. There’s ‘taking a twirl round town without your wimple on’ and ‘stealing bequests left to the Church’ and only one of them is Sr Julienne’s style.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 03/02/2020 18:13

It looked like lots of Sixpences or possibly Shillings (now worth 5p) that had been saved in the box. She took at most two or three, so not a fortune.

£5 would have been a lot of money in those days - not far off an average week's wages for most.

FredaFrogspawn · 03/02/2020 18:59

My mum earned £5 a week in the early fifties in London as a young professional. So I guess it’s like 400 or so now.

FlamingoAndJohn · 03/02/2020 20:35

Granted not the 60s but I remember in the early 80s that cinema tickets were cheap enough that i could afford to go without much thought using my pocket money.

HorseFlyOfExtraordinaryLength · 03/02/2020 20:51

I've just watched on iplayer.
Dr Turner is cringingly insufferable. How can Shelagh put up with him? Mind you their whole family life is incredibly unbelievable and twee.
"Oh Patrick" simper.
Still love her hairdo though.

FaithInfinity · 03/02/2020 21:04

I’m surprised they could just turn up to the pictures. I remember in the 80s trying to see 101 Dalmatians at our local flea pit cinema and missing out because it was so popular. Surely it would have been a queue up to see such a popular film so early after its release?!

FlamingoAndJohn · 03/02/2020 21:28

I do too! I wouldn’t have it but I love it.

crabb · 03/02/2020 22:06

@MardyBra - I picked up on the “Enjoy!” too. It jarred!

icelolly99 · 03/02/2020 22:07

That was a tombola not a raffle....how the heck did she get Julie Andrew's face printed on one 'ticket'.
.

FlamingoAndJohn · 03/02/2020 22:09

I was wondering about the printing too.

We had coloured sheets in the 60's (nylon, full of static!). My mother was very proud of how up to date they were, I think I had a blue set and a green set, and my brother had yellow.

MrsSlocombesPussy · 04/02/2020 00:56

Ooh yes, I remember nylon sheets! Although we always had brushed cotton in the winter. And being weighed down with layers of blankets and an eiderdown on top.

Squigean · 04/02/2020 03:39

Coloured sheets and towels were definitely a thing. So much so I have the idea white towels and sheets would have been unusual!! Quite posh sounding!

Bedding might have had a pattern. I especially recall flowery-print sheets.

The candy striped flannelette sheets though they were pretty much standard issue weren't they!! Not sure I've met anyone who doesn't remember those. Along with the wool blankets. I especially recall wool blankets that has a stain edging on two ends being quite normal and these blankets being coloured pink or blue. That or wool blankets that had coloured stripes that increased in thickness either end

Feel all nostalgic now!!
