BBC drama starts 29th December 9pm

Yeah I know I'm early with this thread, but I can't wait.
I know nothing about this other than the brief articles I've read but it just looks like my kind of drama.

Looking forward to this. I know the story inside out and have high hopes for this drama. I liked the film Scandal but always thought there could have been a TV series because of how much happened with all the sub-stories etc.

.

hiphiphoorayback · 28/12/2019 19:36

Is this with Hugh Grant?

TheTruthAboutLove · 28/12/2019 19:37

My Grandmother insists that Christine Keeler is from the same small North-Eastern town we are all from, and that our relatives knew her and were friends with her.

That is literally all I know about this programme!

southeastdweller · 28/12/2019 19:47

Is this with Hugh Grant?

No, you're thinking of A Very English Scandal.

The Trial of Christine Keeler

Looking forward to this tomorrow night too. I'm a proper history buff, especially 20th century stuff so this is right up my street. I remember watching Scandal with Joanne Whalley back in the 80s too.

xmassquared · 28/12/2019 20:28

I'm looking forward to this too and it will be interesting to see how she is portrayed. I remember Scandal being released when I was still at school and there being articles about her around about that time.

It's really awful that she was still hounded by the tabloids in her later years, and referred to as a "good time girl", call girl and all sorts of misogynistic names.

Spidey66 · 28/12/2019 20:39

@TheTruthAboutLove your gran's wrong as Christine Keeler came from Berks.

unique1986 · 29/12/2019 18:47

Sophie Cookson is supposed to be really good in this.

@Spidey66 How odd of her. She must have been thinking of something or someone else!

Hope everyone enjoys it :)

Bluerussian · 29/12/2019 20:36

I'm certainly going to watch it, I remember when it all happened, think I was about thirteen.

CoolCarrie · 29/12/2019 21:06

The actress playing Christine is far prettier than the real one.

CoolCarrie · 29/12/2019 21:10

But she was a call girl, as was Mandy Rice Davis so why is it misogynistic to call her that?

southeastdweller · 29/12/2019 21:12

They were never call girls.

CoolCarrie · 29/12/2019 21:14

Valerie Hobson was the only one who came out of the scandal with any guts or dignity. She was an excellent actress, and she must have been devastated by his behaviour.

CoolCarrie · 29/12/2019 21:15

They were paid for sex, what else could they be then?

Goawayquickly · 29/12/2019 21:16

The real christine was stunning, I've read a couple of people say no photo ever did her justice and Mandy said she was utterly beautiful

Nat6999 · 29/12/2019 21:17

I'm just watching it, I love anything based on a true story, it's great being able to watch & google the whole story.

LadyEggs · 29/12/2019 21:17

I'm confused already - who is Stephen and what is his relationship to Christine, Mandy and Profumo?

BodenGate · 29/12/2019 21:22

I love anything based on a true story too!

Supersimkin2 · 29/12/2019 21:23

Ward was convicted of being her pimp, which suggests she was a hooker, or more likely trafficked.

The poor girl was raped by her stepfather and friends and eventually had to leave home as she wasn't being fed. She moved from waitressing to topless dancer in her late teens and then met Ward.

LordEmsworth · 29/12/2019 21:25

I'm confused already Stephen Ward introduced Christine Keeler to John Profumo and other men she had affairs with. He was intrinsic to the scandal.

CoolCarrie · 29/12/2019 21:25

Stephan was their friend, or pimp or fixer, he liked to connect people as it were, he knew lots of “important “ people because he was an osteopath and prince Phillip was briefly said to a client of his.

southeastdweller · 29/12/2019 21:29

They weren’t paid for sex.

LordEmsworth · 29/12/2019 21:30

But she was a call girl, as was Mandy Rice Davis so why is it misogynistic to call her that?

It is, you will clearly be surprised to hear, misogynistic to try to discredit women's testimony by suggesting that they cannot be trusted because they had sex, either for money or because they enjoyed it. The media and establishment did not call them call girls as a statement of fact, they did it to try to undermine them (and largely succeeded).
