BBC drama starts 29th December 9pm

Yeah I know I'm early with this thread, but I can't wait.
I know nothing about this other than the brief articles I've read but it just looks like my kind of drama.

I read that James Norton had been aged up for the role with wrinkly prosthetics. He didn't look much different from usual to me, and he should have more of a receding hairline. But tbh, Stephen Ward didn't look like a man in his 50s at the time of his death. Be warned, though, if you want to do a Google image search, that pictures of his body being taken out of his flat are amongst the first to come up in the results Sad

longwayoff · 30/12/2019 14:16

The 'man in the mask' has a floating identity. D of E was favourite at the time but assorted well connected people have also been suspects.

stumbledin · 30/12/2019 15:20

I thought the jumping back and forward through time did not help the telling of the story if part of the intent is to show how an "ordinary girl" got caught up in a major political scandal.

There are so many people who she met along the way who played a part in how for instance she was ever invited to be at events where politicians etc., were attending.

I am wondering if effectively Stephen Ward was almost like a Jeffrey Epstein in that he used his connections to introduce powerful men to women who were surviving on handouts and favours. Call girls would have had a regular income (even if only a small percentage) of the money they got from clients, which it seems neither CK or MRD had. Having to ask for five bob or whatever.

On another point it is like that Rachman was not the pantomime villan that the tabloids created as much from anti semitism as from fact. And like Stephen Ward and CK and MPD paid the price for the actual sins of the establishment. julesbirch.com/2012/10/24/revealing-the-real-rachman/

I was old enough to remember this story at the time, and the inference was really slight that somehow through "pillow talk" christine keeler could have got information from Profumo to pass to the Russians. Not sure how this series will play it out, but it is as likely that it was a tabloid sting trying to bring down Profumo for political reasons and used the sex orgy angle to discredit him.

When at that time young women who for whatever reason were surviving on their own were extremely vulnerable to sexual exploitation and abuse.

And the male establishment looked after themselves (with their wives turning a blind eye).

(Just as an aside read an article about Jack Monroe staying sober for a year and she talks about celebrities and journalists feeling entitled to grope her in social and work situations Angry She seems to be one of those women who spoke of being trans because the femaleness of her body makes her vulnerable)

NewName73 · 30/12/2019 16:00

One of the points about this version of the story is that it takes the female perspective on the story ... most of the production team are women.

However, I also found the constant flashbacks very confusing and a bit unsatisfying.

DH fell asleep in the middle - but he had spent the afternoon watching football in the pub...

I watched an interview with some of the cast and the writer and she did say that she could have started episode 1 with Christine as a younger girl but she thought it was be more enticing for the viewer to see see the start of the Affair at the end of episode one as opposed to having episode 1 before she was introduced to any of these people and living with Stephen Ward.
I don't just want to see flashbacks of the Affair tho apparently it didn't last very long.
Guessing a month or so.

From memory Christine has died I think. Christine was a dinner Lady until the Headmaster found out her real name and who she was and then he sacked her. She was estranged from one of her sons at least i think and she lived in a tower block in Brighton? I have watched the movie Scandal many times.

DoesntLeftoverTurkeySoupDragOn · 30/12/2019 16:19

I think it is in extremely bad taste bearing in mind Christine Keeler died not so long ago.

I can't find it now but I'm sure I read a quote yesterday from her family that said they were pleased the story was being told from her perspective.

SoleBizzz · 30/12/2019 16:21
This interview is interesting.

I am watching the drama now on iPlayer

IcedPurple · 30/12/2019 16:23

I am wondering if effectively Stephen Ward was almost like a Jeffrey Epstein in that he used his connections to introduce powerful men to women who were surviving on handouts and favours.

Yep. In the film 'Scandal' John Hurt portrays him as rather a tragic figure, and while he may have been a scapegoat for establishment crimes to some extent, there's no doubt he was a sleazeball happily exploiting young women - even if of legal age - with very few options in life. I find it hard to feel too sorry for him.

On another note, I agree that the flashbacks are annoying and a bit lazy.

SoleBizzz · 30/12/2019 16:24

I have never, ever believed Christine waa a prostitute. This was said about her to discredit her character. I read a bit if Christine's book.

SoleBizzz · 30/12/2019 16:25

Christine ans Stephen hated each other and she was scared Stephen woukd have her killed.

SoleBizzz · 30/12/2019 16:28

Why a drama on BBC now? The BBC do nit have to oay Christine any.money now she has died (if that is how it works). Sneaky

southeastdweller · 30/12/2019 16:36

Sue Lawley treated CK with contempt in that interview posted by Sole. I sensed that John Hurt was understandably pissed off on her behalf.

"Are there any of those men that you've loved?". Appalling interviewing Angry

IcedPurple · 30/12/2019 16:37

You don't have to pay someone to make a TV drama based on their lives. Also, there was been at least one film based on the story made during the lifetime of both Keeler and Rice Davies.

NewName73 · 30/12/2019 16:51

Yup - Scandal was the film (with John Hurt as Stephen Ward) made several years ago.

Housewife2010 · 30/12/2019 20:19

Christine Keeler came across very well in that YouTube clip. She was much more well spoken than I expected too.

CoolCarrie · 30/12/2019 21:38

Jenny Agutter’s husband was a director of Cliveden when it became a hotel.

NigellasGuest · 30/12/2019 21:51

I think CK ended up in one of those tower blocks at Worlds End

CoolCarrie · 30/12/2019 22:01

I am glad it’s only three parts, not six

CoolCarrie · 30/12/2019 22:03

That Margaret Fleming documentary looks very interesting, there was a tread on MN about the tragic case.

Palavah · 30/12/2019 22:06

I had to step out to turn the oven over. What was Ward searching for in the bottom of that envelope on the bed at the end of tonight's episode?

CoolCarrie · 30/12/2019 22:09

It was more letters that he had hidden earlier on.

southeastdweller · 30/12/2019 22:11

So it's a three parter? I'm sure I read it in a newspaper it had six episodes.

Palavah · 30/12/2019 22:12

Thanks @CoolCarrie

unique1986 · 30/12/2019 22:15

It is 6 parts.
The announcer just got it wrong.
