BBC drama starts 29th December 9pm

Yeah I know I'm early with this thread, but I can't wait.
I know nothing about this other than the brief articles I've read but it just looks like my kind of drama.

No, it's a six parter.

Dowser · 29/12/2019 22:26

Yes GM..is Ghislaine Maxwell

Wasn’t there something about the headless man in a photo ..or I miSing my scandals.

unique1986 · 29/12/2019 22:27

I'm so glad the second episode is on tomorrow.
I don't mind that it was a little bit slow because this is spread for six episodes.

I wonder if we will see how she ended up being in relationships with the two black guys.

No, it's a six parter.

Really? Sounds like overkill to me, but that's typical these days. Like 'Gold Digger'. Was dragged out when it really should have been 3 or 4 episodes at most.

CoolCarrie · 29/12/2019 22:34

The film was excellent, this isn’t, but I will watch the next episode to see if it picks up.

RaininSummer · 29/12/2019 22:36

Ward is driving me crazy with his incessant 'little baby' refrain .

Ithinkwerealonenowtiffany · 29/12/2019 22:47

I thoroughly enjoyed it.

unique1986 · 29/12/2019 22:48

I watch the most of the Scandal film on YouTube recently.
I also found Stephen Ward on that very annoying as well so it's not just James Norton.

The poor girl was raped by her stepfather and friends and eventually had to leave home as she wasn't being fed.

Where's this from? Not in any of the articles I've read.

Puffinhead · 29/12/2019 22:49

@Oblomov20, I thought the same. I think it was the fact that Profumo lied about the affair - and later admitted it - that added to the scandal.

Rafflesway · 29/12/2019 22:55

Deliberately avoided this as I think it is in extremely bad taste bearing in mind Christine Keeler died not so long ago.

Supersimkin2 · 29/12/2019 23:00

Mostly Wikipedia. Not sure if it was rape though, 'just' sexual assault. Either way CK was horribly neglected (starved) and had to leave home.

IcedPurple · 29/12/2019 23:02

She died in December 2017. 2 years ago. What's your cut off point for making a TV series about a real-life person? This series seems to be quite respectful of her so personally I don't see a problem.

Bluerussian · 29/12/2019 23:04

unique
Aloysius (Lucky) Gordon was a Jazz Singer, Jonny Edgecombe was a jazz promotor. She met them through the night club scene, she was originally a waitress and then a topless dancer.

They were both mad about her and vied for her affection but she was very young and just wanted excitement really and money of course because she'd had a terrible upbringing in which she was not only sexually abused but severely malnourished.

I watched it; seen better and seen worse. I liked the two girls - Christine and Mandy.

It was beyond me why she ever had to go to prison. Hopefully this drama will give more of an insight into that.

Housewife2010 · 30/12/2019 07:58

She went to prison because she committed perjury.

Bluerussian · 30/12/2019 08:23

Oh right, I suppose she said she didn't when she (well she would, wouldn't she). Seems grossly unfair to me, Profumo didn't go to prison. The girl carried the can. There was no 'spying' or breach of security. Absolute rubbish.

Elderflower14 · 30/12/2019 09:14

Now starting to watch.. The beginning is wrong already... 🤔

happilybemused · 30/12/2019 09:29

Christine Keeler did not go to prison for her part in the Profumo affair.

She was a attacked at the house of a friend. She claimed ii was one of her her ex lovers and testified to this effect in his trial.

He denied it but his two witnesses could not be found. When they later emerged the court of appeal overturned the case and Christine Keeler was convicted for perjury and sentenced to 9 months in jail.

Her two ex lovers from when she worked in a nightclub are key as to why the Profumo affair came to light.

One of them fired shots at Stephen Wards house where she was living after an argument with her. It came to the light of the press and they started investigating her past. Hence it was all exposed.

IcedPurple · 30/12/2019 11:25

James Norton is excellent.

He's doing his best but he is too young for the role. The real Stephen Ward was already in his early 50s at this time, and Norton is about 15 years younger. He's only about 7 years older than the actress playing Christine Keeler. The sleaziness of the character - "little baby" ugh! - would be much more apparant if they had cast an appropriately aged actor.

PuppyMonkey · 30/12/2019 11:34

Wasn’t gripped at all tbh, the constant flashbacks and flash forwards were annoying and if you’re not an expert on the RL characters, it’s just confusing and not engaging imho.

I long for a drama that just tells a story from the start in chronological order tbh Grin. The six part format is perfect for such an approach, but oh no, let’s do flashbacks and flash forwards instead.ConfusedSad

Misscromwellrocks · 30/12/2019 12:55

Christine Keeler seems to have been a very vulnerable and damaged young girl, abused and exploited by so many people. I think she ended up living in quite impoverished and difficult circumstances.

Mandy Rice Davies seems to have been a different kettle of fish, happily exploiting the whole affair and using it to her own benefit.

I have a lot of symp for Christine but Mandy comes across as hard as nails.

I recall talk of Prince Phillip being the person at the parties referred to as *the man in the mask’

southeastdweller · 30/12/2019 13:13

The photo thing was made up for The Crown. The ‘man in the mask’ was apparently a fairly famous film director called Anthony Asquith.
