Anyone watching?

OP posts:
Dramaofallama · 28/10/2019 22:03

Health is a social construct comment is just ridiculous.
Health is important in keeping us alive, doesn't matter your size. Just deluding herself now. Nothing wrong with being comfortable in your skin, regardless of your size but you can't pretend health is just a construct.

Campervan69 · 28/10/2019 22:04

Well there's a surprise the Cult woman is from Canada. She is so annoying with her science denial what are they doing to them in Canada?

Of course the young fat people can get away with it at the moment it's only when you hit your 40s and 50s that your health starts to suffer and you have to change your ways if you're not going to die early

itssquidstella · 28/10/2019 22:06

Twitter has been lit over this programme. Victoria is dreadful and peddling dangerous lies.

StillWeRise · 28/10/2019 22:08

yes, she was noticeably less fat than the others
I also noticed that the older woman who was more concerned about her health was looked to me to be MORE happy in her body than the younger women- she was facing the world relatively unadorned, the younger 'fat positive' women were plastered in make up.
I hope someone stops indulging the dangerous nonsense.

Preparingfor · 28/10/2019 22:09

She is sabotaging the others, such an enabler

MidiMitch · 28/10/2019 22:09

I'm not overweight but wouldn't stand in my bikini in the high street for anyone. Doesn't mean I'm ashamed of who I am. Great if you want to do that but I felt for the ones who didn't who seemed to feel that that implied they didn't love themselves enough.

PanGalaticGargleBlaster · 28/10/2019 22:16

Can't help noticing the health impact denial shouters are all younger

Yep, the Indian chap was quick to point out that they will probably change their minds when health issues start to kick in.

Actually the more I think about it the more I think Victoria is a complete cunt.

Soontobe60 · 28/10/2019 22:16

I felt that the standing in the street bit was so patronising to the women. They’re surrounded by a camera crew which will always draw attention, most of the people signing were younger, slimmer girls, and as one person pointed out, in today’s pc society, is anyone going to be daft enough to tell an obese person that they are actually obese!
And yes, GPs will primarily suggest losing weight when you go to see them, because they know the impact all that excess weight will have in their bodies!

theredchord · 28/10/2019 22:23

Interesting watch. As someone with type 1 diabetes I found the ignorance of Victoria absolutely shocking. I have an autoimmune disease that I cannot do anything about; people carrying too much weight CAN do something about it and they absolutely should be trying. I’m all for being positive about your body but striving to improve your situation is something we should all do. I wonder whether Victoria et al would tell an anorexic that they should ignore medical evidence and carry on starving themselves to death?!

Campervan69 · 28/10/2019 22:23

I actually thought that was hilarious that woman who said I know the PC thing to say and I also know what the reality and truth is. That seems to be the story of our society at the moment.

EdWinchester · 28/10/2019 22:26

Blond woman is a twit - ‘health is a social construct’ and ‘obesity has no real impact on long term health’. What a load of absolute bollocks.

Body confidence great - but health should be a priority.

Dramaofallama · 28/10/2019 22:26

Is Victoria a life coach? I think she said that was her job at the start?
Would make sense why she is so anti health, diet, exercise ect. She makes money from spouting this.

Allthebubbles · 28/10/2019 22:26

The bit about not answering the mobility questions made me cross, my DH is disabled, I love him to bits, I think he's amazing, he does brilliant work in his field but I don't want his mobility issues and to be honest nor does he. They don't define him as a person, it's just a pain and life is harder work. I'm not better because I can walk but for quite a lot of things it's an awful lot easier. Saying that does not in any way lessen my DH as a person.
Rant over.
I'm also overweight and I'm body confident but I can see that carrying 3-4 stone extra is having an impact. I do get caught up/ confused in not wanting to yo-yo diet though and there is some interesting stuff in the intuitive eating message ( which I thought that woman explained extremely badly) It is a tricky issue.

StillWeRise · 28/10/2019 22:31

ain't that the truth Campervan
mmm, refusal to listen to opposing viewpoints, denial of objective reality, trashing of science, a focus on the individual, obsession with superficial appearances, youth orientation....what am I reminded of...Hmm

DishingOutDone · 28/10/2019 22:38

So basically any worthwhile discussion has been stymied by this Victoria woman pursuing a very specific agenda?

Skinnychip · 28/10/2019 22:40

I saw about half the programme. I was surprised that some were arguing with medical science and didn't want to listen to the guest speaker.
I'm assuming thay all volunteered to be on the programme so i felt it was a bit unsociable or rude not to hear him out.
Having said this, after i form an opinion like this, i usually take a step back and wonder what slant the programme makers intended to put on it and how carefully it is edited. Maybe all is not what it seems....?

Zampa · 28/10/2019 23:20

Agreed with a lot of what the body positives had to say; people shouldn't be made to feel bad about themselves, your weight doesn't determine how healthy you are and diet culture is bad.

However, their attitude towards those who were unhappy and wanted to make choices that opposed their position were appalling.

I think that maybe they were edited to look a bit daft but this may be confirmation bias.

Smellbellina · 28/10/2019 23:26

I am a smoker and am going to proclaim lung positivity and call out anyone who tries to lecture me about the health implications as ‘tar shamers’ from now on

Lifeinthedeep · 28/10/2019 23:27

They’re all a bit odd and I don’t think they represent the majority of fat people.

Most people know they’re fat, would probably like to be thinner for health/cosmetic reasons but don’t really want to change anything so continue with their lifestyle. Call a spade a spade. Yes, you can look beautiful and stylish when you’re fat but we don’t need a trend in morbid obesity.

marywinchester · 29/10/2019 00:02

the lady that had the baby with her, sarah, was in a different programme a few years ago. it was either obese: a year to save my life or fat: the fight of my life both with jessie pavelka. she did a triathlon at the end and seemed to change her lifestyle but it seems she didn't continue with the changes or maybe not all of them. i know she said she was struggling with it during filming.
shall be interesting to see what happens tomorrow.

SLB37 · 29/10/2019 07:10

Hi Mary, no she kept up the lifestyle change, but unfortunately the reality of living with obesity is that 95% of people over a 5 year period would put the weight back on if not more.
I have come a long way since Fat:The fight of my life, I truly understand the complexities of obesity now.
Thank you for recognising me though. :-)

OverByYer · 29/10/2019 07:17

SLB you were one of the few sensible voices on there. Your baby is gorgeous.

YouJustDoYou · 29/10/2019 07:22

She is incredibly smug and manipulative

Oh god, I really despised her - those filthy looks and smug, snide faces she pulled when she just had to leave the room when the chap was talking about diabetes. Fuck me, but she's just awful.

Preparingfor · 29/10/2019 07:32

SLB you were amazing, a sane voice amongst a lot of incredible nonsense.

CaveMum · 29/10/2019 07:36

I thought this final paragraph from The Guardian review summed it up well, and feels equally applicable to other aspects of modern life.
